Doom 4 E3 reveal.

Yep, excited here too. It appears to be a good middle ground to Doom and Doom 3 styles of play. (I actually prefer Doom 3 myself, even as someone who played the living hell out of the first one.) It looks like the close-range cinematics could get a little old. (at least for me) so hopefully they aren't completely integral to all close-range combat. It looks fun though, and I can't wait to get my hands on it. The visuals look just fine to me too. People just like to complain....

I'd gladly sacrifice some visual quality if the gameplay is solid. A pretty game with shitty gameplay is a waste of money to me.

This is looking pretty stellar at the moment, but after DOOM3... they really couldn't go anywhere but up imho.

It does indeed look good. I particularily liked the mp trailer. looks like it could pony up some good quick gameplay like q3a.. I'm sure it'll be dead a month after release, like every other id game. here's to hoping this has good gameplay tho.

There's a special technique for this. Invite a few friends over, ply them with drinks, then suggest that id games be played on the LAN. :D

Works sometimes. If it doesn't work, that's usually when we get a four player M.U.L.E. game going or something like that.

10 years ago.....my God...this would've been at the top with probably 200 replies. Oh how the world has changed....for the worst. My takeaway? It's Doom. That's a good thing! It looks great, definitely better than Rage. But I found a couple of things lacking:

Good things

It's Doom!

It's got the violence level

It's nostolgic

Bad things

My family and myself both said - wtf is this, Halo? On many parts. Some of the guns, the fov, and the marines suit.

The pace is just too damn SLOW. I don't know what it is about todays games, but they're too slow. Same for the new Unreal Tournament. Set the pace faster, it increases the freneticism and the overall excitement.

The monsters are just standing there like they had a fifth of vodka last night at the gatekeepers pub. Wheres the excitement? The attacks?

The closeup head ripping effect is cool and looks good I'll give it that, but it detracts from the pace and makes it look much too console like (Shenmue anyone?)

The weapon switching lost me big time. To be fighting frantic like that then pause and see a disc pop up with weapons that you slowly choose, literally kills the game. They need to change this asap.

Other than that, I'll be watching this one. But what was Carmacks level of input?

Doom 3 is a classic. Dark, gritty, technologically insane for the time, had Carmack.....I could go on. It was a stark departure from the original, but it has it's place imo.

I'd bet my ass those screens on page 1 have been taken at some massively upscaled res then scaled back down to resemble a "normal" resolution. The PR dept really love their "Bullshots".

Holding off judgement until I see a non-demo level. Not thrilled about the power ups coming from enemies and the big change to the way the demons and gunners look.

Agreed. Demos are missing a few things:
1. Running
2. Strafing
3. Goat headed demons, pentagrams, etc
4. Metal

That video is really promising. Doom is all about fast-paced, intense action. D3 got too far away from that.

I guess I am part of a very small minority that did like D3?

That said, I can see a positively huge number of cues taken wholesale from Sergeant Mark IV's Brutal Doom mod. The moral guardians will be shittin' kittens over this one. :D

EDIT: And FFS, id, give us PC users the option of having a larger FOV than 65 degrees!

Agreed. I don't like the way some of the weapons look, either. Plasma rifle and shotgun are the big two that stand out and make me say "NO"

The game look good. The ammo magnet is a new thing. Also the timebreak for choosing gun that is useless to me because of my bind.

I can't watch in more than 720 either and I can't see anything nearly.

Looks good to me. I find the melee cinematics distracting. Otherwise, it looks like a Doom game.

Also I loved Doom 3 as much as I loved the originals. So to the few of us in here.... Yep! Doom 3 was tip top.

It's actually pretty apparent that most of the people complaining about it just don't like id games. They may have a special nostalgic place for the original Doom somewhere inside them, but that game was as ridiculously simple as it gets. I hear "console this, console that" but really, how far off from "console anything" was the original Doom aside from mouse and KB implementation? Run, grab key, open door, kill demons,,," I absolutely LOVE it, but COME ON!! that would run on any platform (and in fact WAS on every platform) There's nothing PC about it other than M+KB.

If you want something that could only exist on the PC in any proper sense, then you need to look somewhere else. System Shock 2 maybe with its full inventory system, half-the-keyboard worth of controls, complex RPG sub-system, etc. (or even System Shock 1) Or for a simpler experience that still works WAY better on the PC, the Quake series. Due to the pacing, and requirements for accuracy, these ones would suffer on a gamepad. I could see everyone's complaints when applied to Quake. Doom though even though the originals were faster, never required this type of accuracy.

Doom isn't it. Doom is Doom. I agree with people on a few points, like weapon selection, maybe the pacing somewhat, etc. but otherwise, it looks pretty spot on. Don't like Doom games? Don't play Doom.

the movement speed and the stupid consolitis weapon wheel as well as the lock on "fatalities" really hurt the smoothness of gameplay. This is what you get when retards can't use a controller on a fast game.

If brutal doom didnt exist, maybe id be more interested and I'm a long time ID fan. But even when brutal doom adds things that shouldn't be in a doom game ( stupid audible taunts, reloading, bullet pen, etc) it still feels like doom just evolved.

The shackles of consoles are sometimes just too great to overcome for these types of games but money talks. My only hope is that the mod tool (hopefully being completely free to get mods :/ ) can do wonders and basically have the guy who created brutal doom do the same thing to this game to fix the stupid shit. I still can't believe the weapon wheel, theres no way they would possibly think thats a great idea on the PC version.

To be fair, the weapon wheel is probably only there for when you're using a controller. I'd have to imagine that they'd do the 1-0 weapon keybinds just like the classics. I don't like FPS with a controller, but there are people who just prefer that. I don't care which input methods are supported, as long as the game isn't totally biased toward one or the other.

Agreed!

I play on Mouse and Keyboard at my main PC, and with a gamepad in the living-room. Of course I prefer playing shooters with the M+KB, but it's nice to be able to sit back and relax while playing on occasion too. Like you said, as long as one is not favored over the other UI-wise, then I'm happy. It would be nice to know though.

Wow that was really meh.

I am not sure the Doom IP is still relevant today.

Perspective please. What would you say (shooter-wise) IS relevant today? I couldn't be more sick of military sim style shooters, Team Fortress clones, etc. In fact I'd say getting an injection into something that's been largely sitting a while is plenty relevant. I'm completely fine with it not being relevant to you, or anyone else, but curious why that is when every other shooter out now is exactly the same as every other shooter out now. At least Doom has its signature flavor with some updates. If I feel like playing Doom (which I often do actually) now I have another option aside from loading up Doom 3. I love Doom 3, but it's cool that there will be something different to choose if I feel like it.

There really aren't enough gritty action shooters of this style anymore. I'd love another Quake too, and have recently thoroughly enjoyed the new Wolfenstein games too. Something about the id engines and overall aesthetics just make shooting fun.

Can't wait. Got scared as a kid playing Doom 1, let's see if Doom 4 can do the same!

That's exactly whats it's for. Wolfenstein TNO uses the exact same setup.

I, for one, am glad too. Due to RSI in my wrist, I can no longer play FPS's (or any game for that matter) for any length of time with a mouse and keyboard. So getting native controller support OOTB is a nice feature. I'm actually at the point where I no longer buy games without proper controller support with some obvious exceptions (Prison Architect, Cities Skylines, etc).

Doom dev says the game will not be easy,

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-doom-for-xbox-one-ps4-pc-won-t-be-easy-bethesd/1100-6428235/

"I've seen people and even had people say, 'Oh, that looks easy.' That is not easy. The game is a challenging game, it's like [the original Doom] in that respect," Stratton said.

He went on to say that the Bethesda developer who performed the demo during the company's conference Sunday evening was a total expert at the game.

This, in part, explains why Doom didn't look very challenging. Stratton added that Bethesda holds internal competitions to determine which specific developer is best at a particular area of the game when deciding who gets to demo it.

Stratton further explained that the new Doom has open areas that don't force you to take on bad guys in any specific way. Enemies move through the environment all on their own (by jumping, flying, and climbing), using the traversal system from another id Software action game, Rage.

"There was no trickery," Stratton said about the E3 demo. "Even in moments that kind of feel like, 'Oh, that might have been scripted.' Enemies can move through the environment in really unique ways."

Art director Hugo Martin added, "No two people play through it the same."

 Nice! Yeah, RAGE's enemies did a pretty decent job of finding ways to get to you. I think many of them were still largely triggered by you entering into their area, but once there, they would climb up different ways and attack from different locations based on what they had at their disposal, what kind of enemy they were, etc.

Subbing like a boss.

Also, I very much enjoyed Doom 3, even after basically idolizing the original games.

Me too. Still enjoy it pretty much yearly or so. I actually pretty much like every game they've made, even most of the licensed out stuff. (especially so in the case of the new Wolfenstein games) There is something about their games that is different from every other maker out there. There are other dark and gritty games, but none like id. They just get the feel right, their visuals are different, the machinery they create for the levels is just ridiculously cool, everything is big. They just get a formula right that works for me I guess.

Yeah. I liked Quake 4, RAGE, the new Wolfenstein, etc. There's something that I miss about the old id that seemed more passionate and hardcore, (maybe caused by nostalgic, rose colored glasses from the Doom/Quake/Heretic days) but their newer games look and feel great IMO.

You probably liked Prey, too. Shame you can't buy that on Steam anymore. I wish that I had picked it and Wolfenstein 2009 up before they axed them.

I was lucky enough to grab it when it was available. Wolfenstein as well, though I haven't really played it much. I plan to eventually. Maybe when I finish up The Old Blood. Prey was great! Too bad about its availability, and the cancellation of the second one.
