Kind of a stupid question, but do you guys typically reformat your data drives when they aren't fragmented? Like do you guys purposely move your files away from that hard drive to reformat it periodically.

    No. Really no need to.

re-format? no. Unless you're using the drive for some serious server duty, a fragmented data drive should have marginal impact on usage. At worst you can de-fragment the drive, but re-formatting isn't necessary.

No I do not do that. I do defrag (on spinning disks) because as a programmer I have a lot (millions) of small files and thousands of them change daily causing very high levels of fragmentation if I do not defrag for some time.

This can however be a useful test. I mean if a drive is beginning to have head problems you should see some signs of that in the format.

Nope. Only time I format it is because I'm not using it and want it somewhere else.

    Uhh, formatting SSDs is fine.

As for the OP's question, no. I defrag my HDDs, and that is it.

I keep my OS/basic Apps on one partition/drive and Data on another so there is no need to format, just a good defrag once in awhile.

If your SSD failed during a filesystem format it was probably broken anyway.

The first intel 80gb g1 didn't have trim, could that be it?

That would cause unnecessary wear but not drive death. Drive death was because there was already an existing problem with the drive.
