Do you clean your heatsink unit and/or CPU die before installing them (when making a new system, not swapping in a new HS, as obviously you would have to clean off the old thermal paste)

for me, "yes".

I clean mine with a paper towel, it's not the best thing but it works. Then I use some sivler goop (not as)

Target Mold/Die cleaner (super industrial strength stuff, leaves NO residue), alcohol and paper towels.

Of course you should clean it off... That sticky pad thing they usually have sucks. A good tech will always have some paste available in their toolkit. :) I usually scrape it off with a razor blade and lap the hs with some sandpaper till it has a mirror finish.

sand the heatsink down real nice than give it a thorough cleaning with alcohol. ive never sanded a cpu die but i have sanded down my nforce2 chip to give it better contact to the heatsink.

i hope you do clean your HS everytime you reinstall it

i do with 70+% isopropyl alcohol and a Qtip, then reapply the AS3 with my finger in a plastic bag

I clean the gunk off with nail polish remover, then I clean the nail polish remover off with rubbing alcohol, then I rub it thoroughly with the best cloth I can find.

A paint brush for the dust and some alcohol for the artic silver does the trick :D

Keep in mind that those that actually do are probably more eager to advocate that fact.

For myself, I don't, and I am willing to bet that most people out there don't either.

Isopropyl alcohol and clean paper towels. Both CPU and HSF....right down to the shine. Everytime - 100%. Part of the ritual around here.

How much does it matter? It depends on how "bad" the surfaces are.

OEM HSF's I've seen come out of the box are usually damn clean, as are the CPU's. If you had a new CPU / HSF and kept yer mitts off the contact surfaces.....probably no worries.

anytime my hs comes off, both the die and bottom of the heatsink get a good cleaning with rubbing alcohol and papertowels/qtips

I clean them everytime in the dishwasher with a full load of dishes. You would be surprised how well it works. I even did my keyboard like that one time after spilling a sticky liquor drink on top of it:D

well i use Qtips and some 100% alcohol....thats rite boys, 100% dad still has some of it laying in the basement from a job a while back....like a WHILE back(20+yrs) so i use that and some long stem qtips, works like a charm =D

What, do you keep that in the fridge? The stuff has a flashpoint of 72 degrees (f)

  my bottle just sits in the basement tightly sealed and i crack it when i need to use some and seal her back up when done...

Always.
I use compressed air first and then use paper towels, q-tips and alcohol. Sometimes I will use brasso for an extra nice looking finish. I also usually do a quick lapping as there are always marks in the base from the lettering on the CPU core.

i generally clean mine with nail polish remover + a qtip, than wipe it with a paper towel and reapply the ceramique (or whatever i happen to be using atm...)

i wipe the HSF with a cloth and then i spread thermal grease on it and then i wipe that off too

With a new CPU and new heatsink, I will usually clean off the heatsink with rubbing alcohol or something like it. Unless it looks dirty or smudged in some way, I don't clean the die on a new CPU, though.
