We'd have to see if the artifact is the actual model rendering the artifact, or the neural renderer rendering the artifact, neural renderer could be accurately rendering the model itself artifacting (not unheard of in Bethesda games of all games especially, or do you want me to go find you examples of that in those and other games from before Nvidia's AI/neural rendering demos?) And even with that, as touched upon, yes game artifacts exist, both before and after AI/neural rendering.

Game developers don't override publishers/producers unless there's a showstopper. They also aren't interchangeable. It's very unlikely that the artists themselves like the changes because some changes literally erase lighting in scenes all together.

Publishers want to save money... you don't say. Its no different non gaming companies right now. With the top levels of management saying MORE AI. That doesn't mean its going to work out.

This is also a bit of a Trojan horse imho. Sure sure only with developer support. For now. I mean can a developer say no, don't use that RTX remix on my game please? This is just the start of generative rendering. Step one, be nice, talk about artist controls.

It's (the model) rendering the lighting, unlike before when it (the model) wasn't. So yes, the lighting is different in places where there is lighting. Have you not been paying attention at all? (if there was no lighting it wouldn't be lit to even see to the degree it is that you don't like FYI).

To be more accurate, the scene was digested and weighted. Those weights resulted in the choice of a light map that stripped out the subtle details. BUT it looks so much more 2026. :)

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said explicitly that the technology melds "generative AI" with "handcrafted rendering" for "a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression."

Unlike existing generative video models, which Nvidia notes are "difficult to precisely control and often lack predictability," DLSS 5 uses a game's internal color and motion vectors "to infuse the scene with photoreal lighting and materials that are anchored to source 3D content and consistent from frame to frame." That underlying game data helps the system "understand complex scene semantics such as characters, hair, fabric and translucent skin, along with environmental lighting conditions like front-lit, back-lit or overcast," the company says.
Nvidia's announcement video and detailed Digital Foundry breakdown can be found at their respective links.

"Reactions have compared the effect to air-brushed pornography, 'yassified, looks-maxed freaks,' or those uncanny, unavoidable Evony ads," writes Orland. "Others have noted how DLSS 5 seems to mangle the intended art direction by dampening shadows in favor of a homogenized look."

Thomas Was Alone developer Mike Bithell said the technology seems designed "for when you absolutely, positively, don't want any art direction in your gaming experience."

Gunfire Games Senior Concept Artist Jeff Talbot added that "in every shot the art direction was taken away for the senseless addition of 'details.' Each DLSS 5 shot looked worse and had less character than the original. This is just a garbage AI Filter."

DLSS 5's "AI dogshit is actually depressing," said New Blood Interactive founder and CEO Dave Oshry, adding that future generations "won't even know this looks 'bad' or 'wrong' because to them it'll be normal."”

I like Nvidia's products for the most part (DLSS 4.5 seems great, the new frame gen being automatic is a great upgrade), but this shit just depresses me to no end. If this is the future of AAA gaming I'm pretty much only playing indies for now on. Hey, at least I might not need a hardware upgrade for a while. I think it's genuinely vile.

Does that mean I'm supposed to think it's good now? I don't get what your point is, I don't like any of them making this slop. We're all aware the game industry wants cheaper slop graphics. Nvidia is the target because they showcased it, if Bethesda made a slop showcase they'd be rightfully panned.

Yeah, most of them tend to have dlss support at least now, and often frame gen etc. The gaming world is fast becoming a better place. It'll continue to trickle down to lower end production value games too.

i saw it and in fact have seen these same generated faces 1.5+ years ago as the gta online modding community piped into chatgpt

Methinks people doth protest too much which they do not understand, simply because it's Ai and Nvidia is leading on it.

Realistic, hyper realistic, cartoon, cell shading etc. For characters, just a reference picture (ie back to a basic texture map) and let ai do the rest. I absolutely think it's both the future and will make games look better. It'll also mean games can be made in much less time, like the the old days. Back when 2-3 devs would release a game in 6 months, not teams of 300 for 3 years. We'll go through another uncanny valley like the Dreamcast/ps2 days first, but such is progress.

Game houses are all in on this. Better graphics, faster dev cycle, and people do buy games based on eye candy to a large extent.
I don't think you really understand what this is bringing. I agree with you AMD Is in on this as well.... no doubt.

Sony has patented asset streaming. That will be AMDs step one. Games are going to feature a Streamed "Ultra" Quality mode. That is not going to be usable locally. At some point we will get games that are simply not playable 100% locally at all.

I have assumed for years that was the ultimate play with Ray Tracing. Now I realize ray tracing is about to end. We don't need to trace rays if the "Ai" is dynamically selecting light maps. Its going to get sold as saving you storage, and now it seems delivering "photo realistic" graphics.

This is the first real step to the end of PC gaming. Everyone has been warned. This ends with game/asset streaming. The owning of nothing. We are going to get games that simply don't play without the data center crunching "assets" for you.

We just got told for years that we need to calculate rays. That lighting needed to be modeled realistically. NOW they are going to say screw it we'll just use a database of lightmaps and use a weighted model TO GUESS which light map will look the most like instagram.

I mean put away all the talk of "AI" This isn't HAL 9000. There is NO AI here. This is just a weighted model looking at something and saying... Out door street scene. Cross referencing my collection of light maps. Yes yes this one is close. Apply light map.

This is a massive regression. Developers used to apply actual custom made hand crafted light maps to EVERY scene. It was called RASTER graphics. Deep Litter Super Sampling Five is terrible. Nvidia is really digging.

Lightmaps also weren't literally 20 terrabytes back then and took 2 months to bake

Of course they do.

The goal here is not to stop the train wreck, but to mitigate it and refine it to something acceptable, and AA games usually do this as opposed to AAA games which seem too eager to inject the poison into the veins.

AAA is usually the one with the money and infrastructure and man power/hours to be first adopters on new things - along with being big corps themselves direct lines/closer/better relationships with the corps providing said new tech.

Pretty much. Gamers decided nVidia is the bad guy, and AI is the bad guy and thus it must be hated before we have any sort of hands on with it.

You can also see how much of it is just "AI BAD!" shit by the hate here and on Reddit claiming that somehow this is to justify the investment in datacenters. They know so little about what is going on that all they've heard is that AI is causing massive data center buildout (true), and that is hoovering up all the computer components making everything retardedly expensive (also true) so clearly THIS AI feature is destroying gaming and making things expensive (false). There's no understanding of the difference between models running locally and in someone's data center or how this shit doesn't help OpenAI/Antropic/etc at all.

To me it actually reminds me a bit of the frame-gen launch. Man the amount of backlash against "fake frames" and how awful it was and would destroy gaming and lazy devs and optimization and blah, blah, blah. That still goes on, of course, but also as time has went on and they've both improved frame gen and more people have tried it... slowly that has been switching and more people are saying "ummm ya, I actually like this". It's not a be-all, end-all, but it is useful.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was similar. Not every game will use it or want it, not every game is going for accurate lighting. Of those that use it, some probably won't look good or will have issues. However, I'm betting some will be pretty great. Of the demos, Hogwarts Legacy actually looked the most interesting to me. I'm also betting it will improve and change with time. I mean, go and fire up the nVidia app and override DLSS to Preset A, the older CNN model (but not the oldest, still not DLSS 1). See how that looks compared to what we have now.

It is a flight sim and not a game. Though there are for sure people that use MS flight sim that have complained. Its not an actual video game so I mean....

That is one potential future for computer graphics I guess. Very simplified if not barebones polygon graphics as skeletons and AI creates the textures based on some references what the characters are supposed to look like. Basically deepfaking the actual graphics on the moving polygon bones.

Prove to me your predication is more than a predication of yours first and an actuality - until then I'll say I see it no different than a company shutting servers down that render a game unplayable, and that's never stopped me from buying/playing games before that might get shut down eventually.
