difficulties overclocking an e6320

i finished building and overclocking my new computer.

heres what i got, and managed to overclock:

e6320 @ 3.02ghz
4gb ocz pc8500 @ 1066 mhz (5-5-5-15)
evga 680i a1 revision
evga geforce 8800 gts 640 mb @ 625 mhz, (1050 mhz memory clock)
thermalright ultra-120 extreme
wd 500gb sata2
samsung 206bw
creative x-fi fatality
some sata burner
some sata dvd reader
might be some other stuff in there, i forget.

i achieved a score of 10899 3dmark 06 points. i suppose its a great score given the levels in which i was able to o/c, but i can't help but feel a bit frustrated at the fact i wasn't able to boot at any higher than 3.02 ghz. especially since i mounted the cpu with a thermalright ultra-120. i must have fiddled around with voltages and multipliers for a solid 3 hours, but there was nothing i could do to get it to boot past 3.02. ram posed problems as well, i was having difficulties with the multipliers and it wouldn't remain stable for more than 5 minutes with lowered timings.

anyway, that aside, building this thing was a great experience and although i can't really complain about my o/c results (my gains on cpu represent an increase of 61%), i feel somewhat unsatisfied with the gains i managed to achieve. i guess what they say about newer core duo chips being mediocre o/cers is true.

any other tales of disappointing conroe overclocks?
 
It all depends on the chip, and anything above 50% is a good OC. It feels as though you were just expecting too much from a lower end chip, to me.
 
bah, quit if you want, I had this machine 8 months and I still find ways to tune it.

What is your cpu voltage ?
What is your memory voltage ?
What are you idle and load temps while running orthos as reported by coretemp or speedfan.
What are you memory timings set at in the bios.?
What is your memory divider/mulitplier set at ?
Have you tired seeing if 2GB of memory provides more headroom ? (assuming 4x1GB) a common mistake is to try to run 4GB on 1T timings.

The problem isn't your processor. The Nvidia based motherboards do not have a reputation of being able to reliably overclock at high FSB MHz. They generally hit the wall when the FSB gets up to 425 MHz to 450 MHz which is right where you're at.

If you want to run your processor at 3500 MHz then start by getting a board and chipset that is comfortable running at 500 MHz. Something like the Asus P5B Deluxe with the Intel 965 chipset would be a good candidate. The Asus P5K Deluxe with the new P35 chipset is quickly building its own reputation for solid 500 MHz FSB operation.

If you want to see what your processor is really capable of then send it my way and I will warm it up with plenty of voltgage and more MHz then it's ever seen! :D

although, like i said, i'm kind of disapointed, im not about to cry over only getting 3.0 ghz. its still quite a respectable speed!
 
if u gave more details.. like bios voltages and mem timings.

ummm or post SS of ur bios.

ex: Vcore ? memv ? etc.

My E6320 with P6N Platinum has the same result. I maxed out all the voltages except for CPU and memory but it can not go over 440 FSB. I don't know if it's the mobo or the CPU's that hits the FSB wall. Don't have another mobo to test.

I went to Google, did a search for a P6N Platinum and here's the very first article:

This isn't rocket science. If you want to get the most out of your processor then look at the very informative [H]ard OC database and you will clearly see who makes the best overclocking boards.

If you buy a poorly rated, under performing motherboard and chipset then don't hang the wall you hit around Intel's neck because the revision B2 Conroe processors are a 10+ on the right board with the appropriate memory. It's kind of funny how many under performing Conroe chips are usually running on Nvidia boards.
 
vcore is at 1.4v. i tried upping voltage and processing core, but it wouldn't give me more than 3 minutes with orthos. i tried lowering my vcore from 1.4 but again, it wouldn't remain stable. i just woke up actually after running orthos all night, and apparently my pc is stable. if it matters at all, i have the Corsair CMPSU-620HX power supply.

Like unclewebb mentioned, your motherboard is not known for running reliably at high FSB frequencies. That particular CPU has a low multiplier (7x) which means you need to crank up that FSB to push the CPU as far as it can go. IMO, your CPU is definitely not the 'limiting' factor in your setup.

I have a very similar setup:

E6320
Corsair HX620
4x1GB PC8500

But I have the Asus P5K Deluxe. I haven't tested extensively yet, but it will POST with no problem up to 525MHz FSB at stock voltage. (3.6GHz). I generally run at 426 or 460 for the favorable memory timings available at those speeds.

So what batch is your e6320?

Have you considered extra cooling for your northbridge?
 
well i just bought a e6320 and was hoping to OC it up to a e6600 or e6700 and from what i am reading, i should have no problem with that.
