Did you play Prototype?

D2D is having a 24 days of Christmas sale.

They had a massive summer sale not too long ago, of course, during which I bought about 5 titles for $5 each. Steam also just finished its Christmas sale, last week, during which I bought Resident Evil 5, Grid, and Borderlands (shockingly, all within the space of just 48 hours). On Sunday I bought Dawn Of Discovery on sale at D2D, and then Shift the next day (for 25$ Shift was a steal - for me it would've been worthy of the full price.) I thought I had bought every major game published in the past 24 months - but no.

For only $20 I have to take a look at Prototype (on sale for 24 hours at D2D). It isn't a game I would pay full price for, but for $20 I have to consider this.

Any thoughts here?

When Red Faction Guerilla went on sale I bought it on a whim, and I have to admit I've gotten a good 15 hours out of that game. If I get two dollar's worth of entertainment from a title then I'm happy. So a twenty dollar game has to last me... let me do the math here... ah yes, ten hours.

I think that was just their thanksgiving sale. I was there for steams christmas sale last year. God I bought way too many games. I would definitely get Prototype for 19.99 it's a good game. I really never had any complaints.

My kid plays it all the time, he loves it. Personally though I couldn't get into it. Felt repetitive.

I think that it's pretty fun initially, but once you start needing to upgrade more the missions become repetitive and it just feels like grinding. I almost finished it, but never could because I got tired of doing the same thing over and over.

I bought it, but never played it.

I suppose I should get around to it at some point.

^ Why would you buy a game and never actually play it? :p Which makes me wonder.. how many people actually go to the store, buy a game, come home and DONT play it?

My buddy lent me the game for pc and I played through it. It's a good game I was going to buy it for my 360 so I could get the achievements but then my 360 red ringed and I haven't replaced it yet so for $20 definately buy it

Bought it for [H] purposes, but by the time I got around to it, Brent removed it from our game lineup.

I have numerous games I have not actually played. There are only so many hours in a day.

Same...I got pretty far into it but just couldn't finish it. Same thing with Assassin's Creed...too repetitive.

I doubt I'd ever finish Prototype - but these days that's pretty typical.

The vast, vast majority of titles I buy, I never finish. Bioshock, shockingly, is one of them. I seem to take six month breaks from playing Bioshock - but each time I return to it, and pick up from where I left off, I wonder why on earth I stopped playing?

I think I probably will buy Prototype at 20$. We went out to a movie last night, and then had some dinner afterwards, and I ended up spending sixty dollars - the couple I was with started bickering at one another, and the movie pretty much sucked, and all I could think was that I could've bought something like The Saboteur or Modern Warfare 2 and easily had ten times as much fun as this?

Prototype at $20 is an excellent buy.

I did, you didn't say the second part was work related or not. ;)

Ha! I decided to buy it, and the forgot to order it. I just did so now. Just a few hours left for those of you sitting on the fence. Twenty dollars isn't too bad.

Since August I've bought 8 titles at D2D, and have spent 100$

Bioshock
Resident Evil 5
Dawn of Discovery
The Chronicles of Riddick
Beyond Good And Evil
The Dutch East India Company (haven't even launched it yet)
Shift
Elven Legacy

I'd say that's pretty good for a hundred bucks. I've spent that much money in a single evening. I've spent more than that on a hockey game or a concert. Lisa, the girl on the corner, charges four times that much money... er.

EDIT: Actually, that's 9 titles now, since I just bought Prototype. Okay, that's 9 titles for 120$ Still cheaper than Lisa though!

How can people say Prototype was repetitive? If you want a repetitive game play AC1. Prototype is a superb game probably falling within my top 3 of the year alongside Batman AA and AC2.

Did Prototype ever end up getting a patch for PC? I remember hearing there were some pretty major bugs and no patch.

My download is still in progress, but I just checked D2D's website literally one minute ago to see if there was a patch - and there wasn't.

after you finish it and unlock everything, you get to go around all the city and do/kill/brake whatever you want, I like to do this couple of times every week, it’s fun with a very easy and smooth handling, can’t wait for a sequel with better graphics.

Never saw a patch for the PC version and not counting on ever seeing one.

How can people say Prototype was repetitive?

Because it is.

Fun, but very repetitive.

If you want a repetitive game play AC1.

Yup, that is as well although for some reason I just found I got a lot more into that game than I did Prototype.

Prototype is a superb game probably falling within my top 3 of the year alongside Batman AA and AC2.

AC2 really must be a lot better than AC1 at this rate if someone like you who complains about AC1 being repetitive puts AC2 on the GOTY shortlist in the same breath.

At that rate, I'm guessing AC2 will be my GOTY sight unseen. (I'm waiting for the PC version with growing impatience.)

This. I got sick of there never really being any new or challenging enemies, they were all the same. Oh, and the boss fights were horrible. Game was amazing fun at first, but just boring after a few hours.

Exactly. I don't know how anyone who played this game for an appreciable amount of time can disagree with these facts.

It's fun, but yes, it gets very repetitive and grinding before too long. It really depends on people's personal tolerances. I found that I just simply lost interest in the game fairly quickly after a point because of this.

This was my experience as well.

I wish I hadn't paid full price for it when it came out but I've done worse.

At $20? Sure, go for it.

All this being said: If they decide to do a part 2 some day and pay attention to gamers' feedback, good and bad, and they make improvements across the boards? Part 2 could be an absolute killer of a game.

I'm stuck at the point where I enter the Gentek building near the beginning. The loading screen shows up, I press enter, and I get a permanent black screen. :(

On the subject of Assassin's Creed - it was almost a day one for me when I bought my 360, which I did so chiefly because of Mass Effect. Assassin's Creed, I thought at the time, was missing a game, and I gave up on it after just three hours.

The weird things is that I bought Assassin's Creed for the PC in April of this year, one month after buying my new Core i7, and loved it. It's an atmosphere game, meaning that the visuals are a huge part of the experience. This game looks twice as good on the PC. My understanding is that AC 2 is everything that AC wasn't. If the atmosphere remains, and if Ubisoft has actually put a strong game in there this time, then AC 2 might end up being a great game.

I ended up finishing both Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect in spite of myself - I couldn't not finish them. It just sort of happened, which is quite rare for me. But anyway, what an amazing start to next year: Mass Effect 2 in January, then Star Trek Online a week later, then Bioshock 2, then, closer to Spring, Assassin's Creed 2. I've never seen a year begin this strongly, though I fear that next year will end with a whimper - what's coming? Nothing. The fall of next year might end up being the weakest we've ever seen.

I quite enjoyed Prototype -- I think it's well worth the $20 as long as you aren't looking for a AAA storyline. It's a great open world mindless action title with some fairly deep combat mechanics. Well worth it.

exactly my experience, I would not spend $20 on this

beat it end to end on PC with 70% memory log complete. Never needed any patch.

Yea these online gaming sales are quite amazing.

If one were to string together the THQ pack deal, steam deals, D2D turns 5 and this D2D 24-days deal, and maybe the impulse deals and all else... It was possible to get friggn' SO MANY of the worthwhile games just in the past 6 months.

I personally don't even buy games at full price, so this has been great. I'm curious how this has affected sales? Any stats available?

Edit: and yes, I've played a bit of prototype. Mindless slaughtering is fun for a while, but quite repetitive. The controls don't offer the freedom I want, either. It's a bit of a console game, but one of the better ones.

On a Core i7 - GTX 275 setup, I must be getting about 15-20 frames per second at the start of the game. Is this going to last throughout the game? It's unplayable. My computer cost me $2,500, and it's not even 8 months old yet. No way am I going to put up with this. If I can run GTA 4 at 50 FPS then I should be able to run this thing.

I think that I might've just wasted twenty bucks - you win some, you lose some.
