Yesterday I walked in and my pc was off and thats crazy so i think maybe someone messed with it and it stopped working and they panicked and ran. I just put in a sony dru-720a when i came in and booted up then it starts freezing up. Doesnt matter if i do anything with it or not. I completely unhooked the cdrom and im in safe mode writing this. Can a cdrom do this?

It must be the cdrom cuz i not only unplugged the power but the ide also and now the pc is fine and has been for hours.... Should i try putting it on the secondary ide? Thx

I would definately put in on the secodary IDE anyway. I would also go out and check for the lastest firmware you can get. I had an AOPEN DVD drive that was just junk until the firmware was upgraded, it would constantly get polled in windows slowing down my whole system.

I changed the jumpers to master and slave and replaced teh ide cable. Now everything works but I wonder what are the rules on Cable Select?

Cable Select is just a n00b way of allowing you to hook any cable up to the drive. I've found that it works sometimes and locks up the rest :). Some drives aren't very compatible with each other. I would have problems with Plextors and Sonys on the same IDE channel (this was about 3 years ago). Glad it's working for you ;).

I've never really seen the point of cable select. When you're putting a system together you've got to check the jumper settings on the HDDs and optical drives anyway, so why not set it to either master or slave while you're at it?

Perhaps I'm just making too much sense here :p

Cable select is nice when you add drives and the master/slave configs change and you don't want to take out the other drives to change the jumpers. My case sure doesn't give me much clearance to change them in the case - not for the 5.25" bays at least. (I don't use PATA for HDs anymore anyway)

Cable Select is just . . .

Off topic, please forgive me this once. Kirbyri, why in the hell do you have a RageXL 8MB PCI card with that kind of system? Is it a joke..? :D

Maybe he melted his video card.

Or

Waiting till he can afford a real card like a x800 or 6800GT.... and didnt want to settle with a mediocre 9800pro or 6600 GT

I have a RageXL because I just sold my 6600GT's in SLI :). I got a refurbed plain 6600 from newegg for $75 (coming this week), and will probably wait for next gen until getting a new card...unless I see a great deal on a X800XL ;). I just ordered a 2005FPW too and widescreen doesn't agree with SLI for some reason :(.

Sorry for blatantly being off topic :).
