Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

Yea best game would be D3 gameplay and PoE depth.

I'd still be playing D3 if there was anything at all to bite your teeth into.

True. I come back to D3 and check it out after every major patch or game changing patch. But after an hour or so it just feels the same, but easier and I logout. How people are still playing this game daily for many hours on end is baffling to me.

I read the comments on here daily, trying to figure out what the draw of the game is for those remaining...and I just don't "get" it. How are the absolutely miniscule amount of additions/tweaks to the game enough to make it playable/enjoyable to you folk?

I often see people saying that the "gameplay" is just so much "better" ...but even if the animations and flow are smooth, the actual mechanics are so superficial...Is it still "not encouraged" to avoid damage (when players complained about getting hit by projectiles despite being several player distances away from them on screen, even without lag, the devs said they weren't supposed to be able to)?

I don't want to make this a "i love poe" post, but when playing D3, and looking at the amount of sheer content/tweaks that are made to poe on a weekly basis, don't you wonder "hey, why doesn't blizz do that, or work that quickly" or "hey, maybe all of these promises that devs have been talking about for more than a year are bullshit?" Does no one think that? Similar thoughts ran past my head about 2 months into D3's release, when I wondered "hey, why would they have whole skills that don't even work" "hey, why did they just nerf a stat so quickly, when they claimed they tested this game"...and shortly left.

I dunno, i guess it's a dead horse, but really, why continue playing this? I absolutely guarantee that each and every one of you could be playing something more enjoyable if the game is as similar as it seems to be when I last played it. Whether or not it's another ARPG, something else is out there that would be more "worth your time".

And if you bothered to read this far, is the RMAH still a means of making money, or has it been flooded/taken over by bots/farmers?

I don't think anyone would rate D3 as a perfect or anywhere near perfect as a game, a lot of us have valid criticisms of the game. Why do we still play it? Because we enjoy playing it. It definately hasn't made major improvements, but enough small ones to show its generally going in the right direction.

As for PoE, the game revolves around too much meta gaming for me to enjoy long term. How many people advise "play your first character however you want, it's going to be a throw away character then you can build a real one". I cleared inferno with my first character without ever reading a guide, using real money, or using any exploits. I experimented, tested, and went broke multiple times figuring what works for me and my playstyle. The same cannot be said about PoE. How much of the PoE would you not know about without hours of reading online. Did you figure out all the vendor recipies on your own, or did you just read online a out them? Did you find a build that works for you by experimentation, or did you just follow cookie cutter build online? If you made it without guides, how many characters did you have to go through to find out what works for you? I understand why people enjoy it, but I'd rather spen 35 hours playing a game and learning the game while playing it with 5 hours of online reading filling in the gap, than 20 hours of reading online guides to make the other 20 hours enjoyable.

That and PoE's mini map is god-awful.

I'm looking forward to PoEs patch though, the shift away from defenses (which D3 also did) may make my glass cannon playstyle more viable. Maybe one of these days I'll win the lottery and get my hands on

PoE is not that complex. I looked up vendor recipes, but I have never looked up a build to follow. All my builds are my own. What i have done is lots of research on how mechanics work. I did the same thing in D3 too. But in D3, it all boiled down to: Go CM and crit.

In PoE, i at least feel like i have some choice in the matter.

The same can be said about PoE, go life and ES or go home. How many posts are there a out getting those nodes and ignoring any damage mods?

Oh and Steve, last I checked 136 demonic essences sitting on my monk. I'll probably upgrade my jc and bs this weekend, I didn't realize upgrades were account wide too in HC.

Hopefully by the time POE is released it will have all the fixable kinks ironed out before I even play it...The last beta I played was a game called Mythos and it was complete scrapped and pretty much turned into Torchlight...So I never play beta's anymore.

D3 has quite a few builds. It just usually boils down which is the best and for which situations its the best for.

Wizard for instance for mobs and Ubers CM wizard is probably the best. But for trash mobs Akon Mode is the best. And for Kiting (which pretty much none existent anymore) blizzard was the best.....And in D2 you pretty much only had a frozen orb and lighting build...Enchantress was fun but nothing compared to the other two.

I have quite a few monk builds I use: A dodge monk with a shield I can get my armor to like 12000 and tank most anything. Tempest rush bell monk can farm like no other. standard Overawe tornado build. Combination strike monk can turn my 200k DPS into 400k DPS. a Spirit Regen + life per spirit spent build is great for tanking as well.

Too me the best thing diablo 3 did for me was give me a game I didn't want. I wanted a D2 clone. Pretty much just Diablo 2 in HD. What they gave me was quite different and I ended up liking it. It plays and feels very different than D2 and D2 clones. TL2 was pretty much a D2 clone, like I originally wanted, and I ended up not really liking it.

......If I only played what I think I want to play I would have never played Dark Souls the greatest game on the planet.

You are killing me. I'd love to do all 136 at once....I wish I had the will power to store up 100 of them and craft it all at once.

I have over 600+ DE stacked right now...wish I could sell them. :(

For me, Innas 4 pc is more important for progression, I can safely change my SW to 3spirit a second and drop the spirit regen passives for seize the initative and one with everything. That way I don't need an xep ammy or stone of Jordan to keep my spirit regen high enough.

Because D3 "feels" great to play. PoE feels clunky and slow. I have 3 friends that hated D3 but they ended up hating PoE even more; doesn't matter if you have all the depth in the world when the core aspect of an ARPG (beating up monsters) isn't very good.

I put many hours into both of these games. I probably put more into each of them than most people put into either. Diablo 3 is the winner in my book. I keep trying to reinstall PoE and give it another go. Every time I cancel the download at like 10% and uninstall it. I have no desire to play it ever again. I talk myself into almost installing it, but I don't really want to. I'd do Diablo 3 if I had a solid internet connection for HC though.

I fucking love the AH. Haters can eat a dick.

I made my first HC character last night.

It's fun!

but I must post the obligatory 'gib me itamz!' since big_aug mentioned the AH. :p

FINALLY, first time I've found a legendary that is actually an upgrade for one of my items.
Albeit, I'm only level 32, but hey, i'll take it....

After all the monks that died this weekend... it was my monk's time to fall! PL6

We were farming mp1 easily (with my friend's DH)

I took Highlands Crossing wp to go to the goat cave and at the wp was 2 packs :

Pack 1: Vortex, Arcane, Frozen,...
Pack 2: Reflect Damage, Waller, Plagued,...

Those are the affixes that I remember...

Needless to say I was in trouble so I tried to hit the WP but they walled me and vortexed me. Then I'm clustered there trying to bypass them with Serenity on... can't....

And just to add insult a Wasp spawn near the bushes :p

I died while my friend was in town. RIP IWillSurvive

Lost Inna's Helm. My stats were ~57k HP, 39k DPS (44 with BW and 60k+ with BF and BW) ~500 AR, ~4k Armor.

Going back to making female monks :D

PoE is an incomplete game and personally I feel it provides an incomplete experience. It's fun, yes, but this weeks 0.11.0 patch is a testament to how the game balance was off. It's a work in progress that has many redeeming features and I expect it will be continuously tweaked and tuned and updated as they push for an October "release" with a completed Act 3, etc. PoE isn't going anywhere but up, but I'm also not in a big rush to play it again until it sees more refinement and more development.

I stopped playing D3 back in December after having a fairly enjoyable time of it. Like PoE, the game does have many redeeming features, but it also has a ton of terrible designs mixed in as well. I stopped playing because I stopped having fun. I got the itch to try it again and have been having some fun again, even though it isn't perfect. The new crafting is giving me some motivation to play more, but if I stop having fun I'll just ditch the game again...no biggie.

So why play D3 again? I like playing arpg's more than any other type of game, and we went years without any good ones. I'll play what there is to play as long as I'm having fun.

I too love the AH...especially on hardcore.

Well thanks for the answers...although i'm still clueless. I find it funny that i ask what makes D3 "fun" I get more comments about poe than d3. So far I've still got: "its the gameplay" "its smooth and polished" "its not d2" "its easy to get into".

Oh well...

You'll see that D3 actually has a pretty aggressive release cycle for a non subscription game in production.

D3 has quite a few builds. It just usually boils down which is the best and for which situations its the best for.
Stevedave, come on, you sound a bit "blindblizzfanboy" with comments like that.

RMAH was never a means of making money....except for gold farmer bots.
of course it was about making money. That was its only positive, all other points of its existence are negative ones.

The RMAH has had little to no affect on the game. Anyone who thinks that it affected the game is excercising ignorance. Every online game that has a closed system has real money trading, whether its sanctioned or not. It's just stupid to assume otherwise.

The massive inflation of gold on soft core was hardly caused by the RMAH or the GAH, it's simply because its softcore and a difficulty slider exists. People can turn it up to MP10 and play recklessly, and the returns in higher mp for many far outweighs the time and gold costs in death. Inflation in the game isn't a problem for those that understand the economy, its all a relative function of how much gold you can make per hour. It's like people complaining about how movie tickets used to cost $1, but never include that their income or cost of living were also smaller to today's standards too.

You wanta specific non-anti-PoE objective answer? The speed is fast paced. The game and meta gaming are streamlined so you spend a lot of time learning, improving, and having an enjoyable experience while actually playing the game. A facilitated trading exists to normalize rng so you can plot a path to gear progression if you want to, but is completely optional as people have successfully cleared hardcore self found. The end game gearing is matched with a difficulty slider which gives more control of the level of challenge you want. Crafting has been improved to actually be simple to use and can yield possibly the best gear in the game (account bound).

Does it still have room for improvements? of course it does, no one will argue otherwise. Could it improve faster? Probably, but I'm not married to the game and can play other games. I simply stop playing when I tire of the game, play other games and after awhile see if enough changes have been made to gain interest again. I think I skipped 1.07 completely, 1.08 was enough for me to enjoy a hardcore char, and I haven't played monk before. Is it still fun to play for many? As you can see by the activity in this thread, yes.

You mentioned PoE in your post, that is why people gave you answers with PoE comparisons. It's also the only other ARPG with closed servers that is in the same league, so those comparisons make sense.

It's funny though, the same issues that pretty much killed my D3 friends list within 2 months of launch are the same reasons that it's been tough to get my friends to play PoE: unfinished and/or untested gameplay. GGG may update PoE with amazing regularity, but that major melee re-balancing is something that people have been calling for for 8+ months - well before the game even transitioned to Open Beta - so GGG isn't perfect either.

This thread has seen an influx of players feeling like giving D3 a try again the past couple of weeks (myself included, and one of my RL friends randomly logged on a day after I did after not playing for 10 months), but I'm not clear on why you felt that was an invitation to rehash all the reasons you don't want to play the game.

But then again, perhaps our fun is actually making you angry:

I only visit D3 threads to laugh at how bad it is.

If you own a Viper, you don't go to the Corvette forums and post about how you don't understand why anyone would want a Corvette.

Stop trolling

I won't deny my previous statement about the "only visiting to laugh", but your above statement (and my own observations) are exactly why I asked the question. I'm not going to reinstall the game, but I am genuinely interested as to what has changed to get people back and playing (and apparently enjoying) it. I won't deny my preference of PoE, nor my dislike of ActiBlizz. I am just poking the issue once again because of what I mentioned before. I asked for comments about D3, and the majority of my responses were about PoE, that to me, is something of note. Everyone seems to have the same, generic answer, that is the same, generic answer as people who said they loved the game at release...

I suppose its just that the shallow-extreme-repetitive nature of D3 is just not my cup of tea. I see that unique WD helm at the top of this page and just don't get it at all. That is the most boring piece of trash I've seen in my life. Swap the name and flavor text for any other "unique" and its the same item. Remove it all together and it's just another rare. Its not unique. I just don't understand how players can see that, look back at what once was, look at what is possible (at PoE or just 2013 games in general) and not be phased.

And to continue to deny that the RMAH didn't effect the game...come on. You are the ignorant one. D3 requires ignorance to enjoy it. Ignore the itemization, story, gameplay, launch issues, first 6 months of rebalancing, the RMAH, the devs, the lack of updates. It seems that, by nature, you can only enjoy D3 that way. "Ignorance is Bliss". Right? I took some film class in community college years ago (god good 10 years already?!?), really basic stuff. But from that semester on, I couldn't watch a movie again without overanalyzing it, looking at camerawork, minute details. In a way it completely ruined some movies for me. Some people can turn that attention-to-detail on/off, I can't. Maybe thats my problem with D3?

Someone that doesn't agree with you isn't automatically a troll. Yes, I'm opinionated, yes I'm nasty toned, yes I bring up stuff that are controversial. Claiming Troll? Sounds like a cop-out to actually discussing things.

Tell me, how exactly did the RMAH affect the game differently than any other real money trading running rampant in PoE, dungeon defenders, WOW, Everquest, eve, final fantasy, or any other closed online multiplayer game?

Too a bias blind hater everyone who likes this game is a fanboy. I already posted the many monk builds I switch between. The varity of builds in D3 is on par with the variety of D2...I know this because I have spent 1000+ hours on each and not just posting about them like yourself.

You have proven yourself a fool so there is nothing more I need to say beyond that. The majority of people share my point of view not yours...trolls and hater just seem too have a louder voice like a 5 year old asking questions he has no desire too hear the answers too...D3 is good...BUT WHY!!! Because it has solid game play .....BUT WHY!!!! And repeat until we stop responding and you feel as though you accomplished something.

There is very little to fear in D3 now. Going High monster power pretty much just make it take longer to kill things it doesn't really make it that much harder.

Says the guy who is VERY tanky. iirc, you pretty much have +armor and resists on every piece of gear and over 92% damage reduction or something like that (just going by memory). Thats overkill in my opinion and is probably why you make this statement.

I thought they revamped the legendaries to be good/interesting. That WD mask is really poorly designed.

Your talking about spec/gear for monk is pretty unique i think. In my experience with the other classes in the game, there was nowhere near as much micromanaging stats and even less options in what moves you pick.

I tried to play around with different specs on my wizard. They were all complete failures. Blizzard even makes you think it's possible by including fire, cold, lightening, and arcane passives... it makes you think, "hey i could go any one of these specs!" ..until you try it.

Yea that was my thought too. Actually my first thought was "Why the fuck would they put attack speed on a caster item?" and then realized that there is no distinction between cast/attack in D3 lol

You know the answer to this (and will deny it being true, despite devs admitting it then backpeddling on their statements), the drop rates in game were made in such a way that encourages the use of the AH, thus changing the game experience for non-traders. And to take that further, the itemization itself further encourages its use. I personally would take it yet another step further and say that they purposely released the game unfinished, with planned changes like the IAS nerf and the legendary changes laid out on a timeline to boost sales of the RMAH over time. ( That last point I debate with myself, is it blizzard being THAT inept, or them being THAT greedy to cripple their game?).

You also ignore the massive difference between a secure, company endorsed method selling items versus ones that can get you banned, hacked, cheated. Again, ignorance.

Anyways...this is getting back into the discussions that have already been made..I wanted to know what specifically makes the *game* enjoyable (and I also asked if the RMAH was profitable, no one has answered that yet). Yes i'm nitpicking, because I don't take "it just is" as an answer. Sorry /shrug.

The Monk is by far the best in terms of build diversity. I have 3 solid wizard builds. Akon, Critical Mass, and Living Lighting Meteor. In Diablo 2 I had 2 solid wizard builds. Lighting and Ice orb.

The bad part about the wizard is most people build for a Critical Mass lock wizard which uses different gear than a Akon wizard so they try and do Akon and it doesn't seem to work good enough because they didn't gear specifically for that build.

Gear based game requires a lot of gear for different builds.

Gear based game requires a lot of gear for different builds.

If only it was accessible. The drop rates are too low to be self found and have the gear available to swap out, and farming took so long to get one item off the AH. It's an aRPG not an MMO, i shouldn't have to spend my life getting gear.

Even if they didn't buff the drop rates, adding gear sets would go SUCH a long way in making you feel like you have a spec.

Actually, admitting that you only come here to laugh at the game and continually posting nothing but criticisms of the game and its players is pretty much the definition of what a troll does. One need only look at your post history to see that you do not like this game and are not looking for reasons to begin playing it.

The game is very good as a beat-'em-up, but the itemization woes have kept it from being a great ARPG IMO. Better items that could synergize with skills (so perhaps tweaked skills too) could have made the game flat-out amazing, if a little content-limited. Still, at the moment I am allowing PoE to grow before I get back into it, and I am intrigued by the newer crafting recipes in D3. My complaint about D3 HC was that the horribly randomized gear made it far too frustrating to grind, leading to too much reliance on the AH. The new crafting removes some of that once you hit lvl 60 and at least works in conjunction with the system they have in place, so I'm giving it a go.

Inferno definately had a lot of issues out the door, there's no denying that, but people could still clear it and it was challenging. With patience planning and practice, inferno was beatable well before any changes. This was proven with how many people beat it well before the RMAH went live as well as the plethora of people that continued to beat it afterwards without spending a dime on the RMAH. If the first thought of the game is, "this game fucking requires me to buy shit with real money" when faced with a challenge, then you really have no argument in analyzing the depth of the game.

Since then, every patch has been either a nerf to inferno or a buff to classes and drop rates. All changes to D3 since launch has made inferno even more accessible to everyone without spending real money, and the best gear in the game is now crafted and account bound. Every step has been a shift away from the usefulness of the RMAH, on top of the fact that it was never necessary in the first place.

So is "depth" what really makes a game fun? Is complexity instantly better? Are you one step closer to curing cancer because your playing games with more "depth"? Does 100 map runs in PoE make you smarter than doing 100 act 3 inferno runs? Is planning a lvl 70 passive skill tree more intellectually stimulating then building 6 skills with runes and 3 passives?

So is "depth" what really makes a game fun? Is complexity instantly better? Are you one step closer to curing cancer because your playing games with more "depth"? Does 100 map runs in PoE make you smarter than doing 100 act 3 inferno runs? Is planning a lvl 70 passive skill tree more intellectually stimulating then building 6 skills with runes and 3 passives?

There are multiple completely different maps per level from 66 on, plus all of Act 3 and optional zones. Obviously this creates much more varied content than just running the same stuff over and over. And yes, putting together a build in PoE is much more intellectually stimulating. Your build largely depends on skill gems (first and foremost), support gems, gear and the passive tree. Not just the passive tree.

I don't care about the pissing contest between the two games, but we should be honest about the differences.

I thought they revamped the legendaries to be good/interesting. That WD mask is really poorly designed.

That item is only level 26, so it's not going to be anything special.

They did revamp legendaries but that doesn't mean they're all awesome now. It just means in the beginning if you got a legendary with item level 50, the first stat would be level 50, the second stat level 47, the 3rd level 43, etc. Now if you get a legendary with item level 50, all stats will be in the level 50 range.

Max item level is 63, but legendaries could role stats on the low end of level 63 making it crap.

Ah, OK.

I'm just saying, for a Legendary, it doesn't really seem any different than a rare.

The PoE fanboys talking about drop rates? I'd love to know how many 6L's, Kaoms, and belts/rings (20+ tri-res, 20+ weapon elemental, 90+ HP) they've found. Probably none.

I found one 6L and one perfect belt in PoE. The drop rates were as abysmal as D3. Almost every rare that dropped was complete and utter garbage. I guess you think all those items you sold for a few GCP or even an exalt count as good items. They don't. The good items are 15-20+ exalts in PoE.
