Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

I remember my first day playing D2 Vanilla I played 7 player LAN for 36 hours strait......however I was in highschool then and had friends. Now If Diablo 3 Had LAN I'd be playing a 1 player game.......because I'm a loser with no real friends.

AAAHAHAHHAAHHA

I'm going to level a character through ~30-60 and Inferno. I will be playing with a friend's Witch Doctor. Here are the options I have at my disposal.
Barbarian
Demon Hunter
Wizard

Alternatively I could level up Monk, rush through Normal mode.

Which class should I go with? What is the general opinion on the ease of progression for those character classes? What would gel best with Witch Doctor for that progression?

do not make a Barb, you'll regret the decision

Yeah, one really annoying thing is the auto-aim the bots have. Like the example here has, those mace guys that bring down that giant hammer on you. If you actually attempt to dodge it, it follows you and still hits you.... This is true for most of the AI classes. I feels like its extremely difficult to dodge spear chuckers as opposed to D2. Freaking auto-bot aim! :p

Tell me about it. i think it's just the huge fucking hitboxes though, coupled with lag. You definitely can't dodge shit like you could in D2.

The latest patch seems to have done something with the drops already.
I was getting a lot of rare and higher level drops (24-31) when I played my lvl 22 Barbarian yesterday.

I was thinking the same thing. I've actually started to find drops which i can use... pretty cool if you ask me. Or maybe my luck is finally turning around.

I played D2 vanilla during launch and remember no pings because you could play offline.

Zing! I was going to say something like this too lol.

The key for a wizard is to get just enough defensive stats to make use of force armor without getting too much. For example, if things are hitting you for 200% of your hp and 1 shotting you, then you don't have enough defense to make use of force armor. If you're getting hit for 35-135% of your HP in 1 shot, then force armor is working beautifully. Getting anymore defense at this point is wasted unless you start reducing dmg below the 35% threshold... Between 135% and 200%, you should look to getting more defense but force armor just saved you from getting 1 shot.

The numbers to work with are a target of 128k and 170k damage (those are the most common dmg numbers for mobs in A3 and A4). Some will hit north of 225k, but those are usually the big slow melee swings. So calculate your EHP to deal with those.

I've had a mixed relationship with diamond skin. I honestly think the absorption amount is far too low for inferno. The skill is great while getting to Inferno but quickly becomes obviously short handed compared to blanket invulnerabilities or skills that scale (i.e. every other class's dmg absorption/avoidance skill).

However with all that said, I have no idea what the new patch will imply for itemization tactics since they're going to retune inferno. These numbers may mean nothing soon.

They didn't update the tooltip when they made the change to force armor... so what did they change exactly? I'm confused by the difference between having enough hp/resists etc because 35% is always 35% no matter what... so...

It will only absorb a maximum of 100% of your HP.

So here are the dmg zones:

0-35% of your HP - it does nothing, you take full damage.

36%-135% of your HP - damage gets reduced to 35% of your HP. Between 35% and 99% of your HP is pretty self explanatory. The reason it goes up to 135% is that it will absorb up to 100% of your hp and reduce dmg to 35%, so at 135%, it absorbs 100% and the remaining 35% gets applied.

136%-199% of your HP - You take more than 35% of the damage, but you don't get 1 shot. I.E. if you take 150% of your HP in damage, 100% of it is absorbed by force armor and the remaining 50% is applied.

200%+ - You will get 1 shot since force armor absorbs the first 100%, then the remaining 100%+ will 1 shot you.

^^ Thanks for that. Makes sense now :)

(there are quite a few tooltips that could use more information)

Also, thanks to whoever gave the tip about looking for 60 items with -requirement. I went from a 2h axe with 370 dps to a 2h axe with 870 dps on my wizard last night, doubling my dps, for 70k. woot.

I was also have problems with inferno on a wizard. Diamond skin seems to be a 50/50 chance to save me. Normal mobs have to hit me at least 2-3 times to kill me, but the butcher owns me in 1 direct shot/charge if I dont get diamond skin off.

I really dont understand what I am doing wrong because I get the Butcher down to ~30% life, but the entire floor catches on fire by then and I die.

I am just confused how a barbarian with 12k dps can kill him easily, but my wizard with 23k dps cant get him down before the floor timer is up...

A barb can probably take most of his hits so he is damaging him constantly. Whereas you have to run around to avoid things so you are not always attacking. On my monk his big attack only takes me down about 1/4 health so i can sit there and constantly attack. When I play with a wizard and she uses venom hydra we seems to kill him much faster because it does damage while she is running around.

That barb is probably spending the entire fight up in his grill chopping away. 23k should be enough to get him down in <2 minutes for the achievement. If you spend half the fight running around, your actual dps is less than the barb.

Because a barb has more armor/resist and more sustain skills. Wizard has few. It means you have low resists to fire as well.

And just fyi, diamond skin isnt that great in inferno. I dont use it, other experienced wiz's dont either. Monsters hit for so much damage in inferno, many times you still take half health in 1 hit even with diamond skin on. Use force armor and probably teleport.

Barb is probably using Wrath of the Berserker. DPS numbers aren't very accurate or fair across classes is my experience.

The entire floor lighting up is sort of an enrage timer (DPS Check).

If you aren't using venom hydra, start using it. It's a constant amount of high DPS while you're avoiding him.

I wouldn't say that. Barb is still viable and possible in Inferno.

It's all about play style. Do you like jumping in the middle of the action, or do you like casting/shooting from a distance.

It just depends. Each class has its plus and minuses.

So, at least in act 1, a barbarian has relatively good surviveability/use in Inferno? I know they are also planning on making changes in 1.0.3 to give melee classes more "fun" in inferno.

I don't mind the kite or smash play style. I've levelled Barb/Wiz/DH through normal already, so I am used to all of them. I guess it's more of a matter of what class will work well with the Witch Doctor, and which will have a good time in inferno (vs. brick wall).

A barbarian can face roll through everything in A1 provided you don't gear poorly. A1 was always a good step up from Hell but not a brick wall. It's really nothing like the later acts right now. I suspect A2 will be much easier post patch. A3 will be a little easier, but A4 might remain difficult still.

My barb is duoing with my brother's WD right now and we're in A3. Got through every champ / elite pack in A2, skipping nothing. It's working out pretty well for us. One thing we did notice was that our normal through hell playtime was astronomically fast with this combo for some reason compared to our other characters.

Excellent. I think I'll give Barb a try then. We won't get to play too often so I think the patch will be out before we even make it to Inferno.

I'll use the DH for my other solo character I think, seeing as I always seem to find Dexterity stuff with any other class I play. And I get a ton of Strength stuff when I play DH...

I don't know, I'm finding diamond skin pretty useful still throughout Act1 inferno and even some of Act2. Currently I'm only at 22k DPS, 3.6k amor, 30k HP and 512-600 resists. I'd love to get my DPS up but I can't find anything, and at this point anything on the AH is ridiculously expensive - I have a 617 DPS 1H axe with a ruby in it. No gem slots at this point that I can change from Vit to Int, either.

Can I say the biggest disappointment are legendaries. I've actually gotten 4 in the past week, and each is a massive disappointment, completely worthless. Can't even sell them on the AH as the price range is something like 10k to 20M - idiots if they think they can get that much. The last 2 I got - Skorn and Cindercoat - bah.

And as for trouble with the butcher as a wizard - I have about the same DPS as you and I have no issue taking him down fairly quickly. Use Venom Hydra and Blizzard, with split Magic Missle. Mix defensive abilities as you like. Don't have an issue - and as mentioned before, diamond skin is great for this fight, IMO.

You should be able to find a much higher DPS weapon for very cheap... I'm vendoring 725 dps 1 handers because those sell for garbage on the AH... have to undercut to like 10k. Also, emeralds in weapon sockets are much better for DPS once you reach a sufficient level. At lower levels rubies shine since their added dmg is a high percentage of your total, but emeralds scale like crazy later on.

If you can ever find crit gear rabble rabble =P

In my experience, it can take quite a bit of damage. When I do Act 3 Siegebreaker runs, diamond skin can absorb like 2 hits from those bat enemies without denting my health. They were champions too so they may have done more damage than the regular ones. It also takes hits from those spear throwers pretty well too. Force armor + average armor/resists may big factors in this because those shots definitely do way more than the 20k diamond skin (with crystal shell) says it absorbs.

Its the force armor thats making it seem like that. :p Dont use force armor then see how many hits it absorbs. I dont believe in using both force armor and diamond because then I give up an offensive skill. Diamond skin cooldown just makes it somewhat useless especially in areas with tons of combat and ranged monsters, like siegebreaker.

Look for posts by Pharmosh, he has 100k Damage 10000 Armor and 1000 Resist as a 2H Barbarian.

EDIT: His gear is probably worth around 35-70million each however.

how many offensive skills do you need? I only run with 3, and never have arcane power to spare. (arcane missle + more power, hydra, arcane orb)

What do you consider "cheap"? Anything I see that would be an upgrade is at least 300k and it only goes up from there. The thing is the AH search is so terrible I'm sure the stuff is out there, but I can't seem to find it even just browsing through the pages. Even looking at just blues doing 700 DPS+ I was seeing upwards of 300k+.

lol... I brought my pc to my friends place and we played a 4 player D1 LAN game for several days... that was so fun... until we got massacred by concubines somewhere in hell and lost all our gear and we tried for about a day on and off to get someone who could at least pick up some of the gear and get out of the room.... every attempt we died.. so many times. ugh. finally had to start over and build up new gear. ha.. that sucked but it was fun over all. :p

Put a low-ass max price. That's how i find most my sweetness. Granted, i'm not at 60 tho.

I guess he may be talking about damage buff skills. I personally can't make room for force weapon because I have 3 damage skills, force armor and diamond skin. Oh yeah, I have Archon as my left mouse button skill... need to do something about that. It has gotten me out of some close calls though, most notably my fights with Belial, Azmodan and Izual.

Ya, I always find really good deals on stuff, but the AH shop bots take the crap pretty fast so...its hard to compete with.

It's super easy to search for weapons since DPS is sortable.

Set the max buyout to 25,000 (or whatever cheap ass price you want) and then sort by DPS.

I gaurantee the top 50+ items on that list will be upgrades for your 600 some odd dps 1 hander.

And when you sort by dps, it's quite easy to see the good deals.

When i found my weapon the other day--i knew i didn't want to pay over 200k, so i put that as my price. Then sorted by dps and looked at the buyout prices. In order from top to bottom it saw: 200k, 200k, 190k, 70k, 160k, etc. Clicked 70k, buyout, done.

Ya, I found this 663dps weapon for the insanely low price of 10k.
bought it as soon as I saw it. It's also a Level Reduced Weapon which makes it pretty valuable.

The other one cost me 222,222 gold though.

How did I not realize that there was a max price search field...dur :( ! Thanks for the help guys!

It took me a bit to find it, as I thought it was tied to Legendary only items. The interface needs work, IMO. The first few times, I spent WAY too much on items because I didn't know it filtered like that

EU had rolling restarts

Tons of gold farming spots nerfed
Tyreal was nerfed, hitting for 1.4K rather than 40K
The amount of mobs in Act 3 was nerfed to stop fast leveling
Sarkoth gold and rare drop was nerfed

I guess I'll just wait till 1.0.3 when I'm actually able to progress into Act 2 with my current gear because I can't do what this game requires since they keep nerfing gold spots

I didn't think Diablo in Hell mode was that easy, my first attempt and I got it done using just a couple potions. So I solo through Hell with my barb and now I'm ready for Inferno Act 1, anyone care to join in and farm? :D

They keep Nerfing them because gold farmers were pulling in insane amounts of gold a day causing hyper-inflation. It was a 100% necessary fix. Try not to be so self centered and think about the game as a whole for everyone.
