Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

^This, I have seen people bitching on the D3 forums because they found a blue sword that does 850 DPS but a Legendary Sword only does 750 DPS. It's true, the blue sword has more damage, but the legendary has over 50 + to all stats, 10% increased attack speed, plus other random stats.

As many people have pointed out here, when you're in Inferno damage is not everything.

Damage is super important in Inferno. If you don't kill stuff fast enough it enrages.

I think he was referring to how the combination of the other stats overshadows the pure damage increase.

So equipping a blue weapon with no other stats but slightly higher damage is better than getting more life, life regen, protection etc..?

I'm not saying it's not important, but other things are important also.

Lets see... my lvl 55 wizard had issues with champion and elite packs on Hell difficulty. 26000 health, 4300 dps. Replaced the 2-h 256dps staff with 2-h 470 axe with the same int and 25% damage increase. DPS went up to 8000. Elites are way less problematic now.

I'd rather focus on dps on the weapon and add stats elsewhere.

Additional stats on the weapon is icing on the cake.

You sure it's not dressing on the salad?

Its......

I am new to this game. With the Wizard, I don't understand the relationship between your sword/staff and the DPS of your magic missile. If I upgrade my staff, does it increase the DPS of my primary spell?

It increases the damage of pretty much all your spells.

Ok so I am playing a little catch-up here but DPS is purely rated off Weapon DMG, correct? So by adding a weapon, or two for that matter, with higher DMG stats you will do more DPS (like ashmeley's example)?

How do stats like plus 2-5dmg play into this? Or is it just a straight forward addition to dmg thus increasing dps?

EDIT: Oh this would be on my 18 Monk btw

It just adds to your base damage (before multipliers like str/int/dex). Very straightforward.

that 10% attack speed will up your dps so much to

Speaking of that, I haven't really checked into it but does the Big DPS number on weapons take into account the % increased attack speed on the item?

I know the + damage attributes are added to the number, but I am not sure if the attack speed one is.

The attack speed most definitely contributes.

Just inspect two items with similar DPS and one of them has +X% attack speed. The one with the ias mod will have lower damage range.

afaik all stats on a weapon are taken into account on the big numbers dps, that is if you have the item in your bag/stash. I'm not sure that it is accurately calculated/portrayed if you're looking at it through the AH even with the correctly selected hero.

no it doesn't, the way to see that is the DPS in your character panel I believe... I could be wrong.

edit: I guess Im wrong :X

Yes, if your weapon has the increased attack speed affix on it, the big DPS number on the weapon takes it into account.

If you have the increased attack speed affix on items other than your weapon, it is taken into account in your overall damage displayed in your character panel, but not on the big DPS number displayed on the weapon.

Is there a hotkey that you can use to compare items on your follower (Templar/Enchantress/Scoundrel)?

Just a quick heads up.

Make sure you new players enable "Elective Mode" in the gameplay tab of the options menu. There are also other options like Show Items, Show Health (very useful), and most importantly, "Show advanced tooltips" which will show you information like how a spell scales to damage. For example, Ray of Frost with advanced tooltip will show something like "Deals 210% of weapon dmg and chills enemies for 3 seconds" vs "Deals a ray of awesome frost damage to enemies and slows them".

I can't figure out how they expect people to play with those options off, mainly Advanced Tooltips/Elective. They went too far making this game 'accessible,' and imo are just making more stupid people.

Thanks! I thought those options would be auto on or just always on.

Here's a question---how does gem purchasing and selling work?

Looking up gems doesn't look like it's actually people's auctions, but selling seems like it would work like the rest.

Ehhhh I think that the elctive mode is pretty cheaty. . . takes any resemblence of a skill tree that D3 had left and throws it out the window.

Wow, playing on a slower connection tonight and I see how terrible the AH is. I absolutely can not buy gems, because it will always time out (due to item being sold already). I'm even trying to buy the gems when they spike to 2-3x value.

I don't have a slow connection and I was only able to buy a gem 1/10 times. Some timed out, some just straight up said they failed right after I clicked buy.

That was probably one of the worst stories I've seen in a while. ME3 should be praised in comparison.

I mean, why does it only show one gem for sale? shouldn't they be all listed as other items are? It almost looks like they aren't auctions.

It's a shame because in terms of story telling I still think that Diablo 2 (not LoD) is one of the best games of all time. I think the story had the potential to be good but was botched so badly in execution that it makes it one of the worst.

I feel like story was mostly written before Blizzard North quit/was disbanded and the WoW devs took it and butchered it for the sake of bringing in tons of old characters and enemies for nostalgia sake. The dialogue and voice acting in fucking cringe worthy though, "MEET THE BUTCHER MUAHAHAHAHAHA." Whoever wrote the dialogue needs to be put out of their misery.

The only subtle thing in the whole story is where you think Azmodan is talking to Leah in a dream until you figure out he's actually talking to Diablo. That was the only decent cinematic in the entire game, rest were garbage.

Also the loot in this game is fucking trash. It's so "streamlined" that it's just boring.

Also if you're a melee class, get fucked in Inferno. Most of the modifiers for elite mobs make it to where you can't even get close without instant death (Molten, Arcane, Desicrater, Plagued, Knockback, Fire Chains, etc).

It's fun for a play through but I'm glad I got it for free. For me, this game will not stand the test of time like Diablo 2 did. There are no interesting builds or gear sets for any of the classes. In a typical Blizzard fashion they went overboard on balancing and made it bland and boring.

i'm wating for the patches to clear up a lot of these ideas. give them time to hear the complains and they'll prolly make it right.

they did say that adding gear is one of the patch types they will do. I am holding out hope that they'll add in some unique gear to bosses, so everything isn't so bland.

edit: keep getting kicked from my game :(

Just finished soloing Act 1 Inferno. Some of those rares/champs are such BS but I had a sucessful kill rate higher than expected. There were maybe less than 1/3 of encounters where I had to skip them entirely, a few that I could kill in the first attempt and the rest that required several attempts.
