Diablo 3 Discussion Thread

So is having enough cash for marketing... which is about the only thing the masses seem to listen to.

Lilbabycat has good points, but we've all read them before. Fact is, there aint shit we can do about it. The masses will do what they do. Even if the entire [H] played D3 or boycotted D3, it wouldn't make any difference.

IIWII

I assure you Lilbabycat doesn't have any good points just Kuul story's. The best way to get better alternatives is by showing more competent developers that the Arpg market is strong.

The rise in MMO's was largely caused by the mass success of WOW. D3's huge popularity is by far the best thing for ARPG's....The developer of TL2 said so himself and accredited much of the success of Torch light 2 on diablo 3 bringing fans to the market.

now that Diablo 3 has sold 12 million copies and TL2 has 2 million other developers small and large have way more incentive and way less risk to create a diablo style ARPG's.

The only way a video game Boycotts truly works is if you have a competitor to move to....Call Of Duty to Battlefield or Coke to Pepsi or Ford to GM......TL2 isn't a worthy competitor and PoE isn't even out yet so simply boycotting D3 only hurts the over all ARPG market....This is even more true on a small market like ARPG's.

That is the problem though, In their eyes, they can do no wrong.

If that were true, they would never have attempted to fix any of the problems.

TBH, I think Blizzard fans are more to blame for that perception than Blizzard is. Luckily some of that fandom is starting to grow up and be quiet.

Definitely the case here. Blizzard put out a game people spent hundreds of hours playing and then complained about. The PC version of D3 is a loot treadmill and there is not mistaking it for anything else, but people still complain even aver they beat the game numerous times and know the grind is endless by design.

Also the limitation of the PC version were clear as day and Blizzard still managed to sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 million copies.

I would argue that their fixes so far aren't really trying by any measure, certainly not the work of a dedicated post-release team, maybe 1-3 people in between working on some other higher profile project. Edit: also the "learn from the mistakes" comment shouldn't have even needed to be said. Any/Every idiot in the world pointed out the issues with D3 from Day 1, how can a team be so incompetent to let the game release as such....unless it was on purpose.
Definitely the case here. Blizzard put out a game people spent hundreds of hours playing and then complained about.

Some (myself) played expecting things to change with patches, or to turn some corner and the game to get good / loot to start actually dropping. Remember, it took 3 months past release for legendaries to even have stats that surpassed BLUES. Each patch promised a lot, but delivered little. Each dev talk promised complete-game-altering changes, and we saw maybe 0.1% of those. Every dev talk has been "We've thought about this" or "We've toyed with the idea of that" or "What would you like to see", followed by a whole big lot of nothing. Low and behold, all the wonderful things people wanted are coming in the expansion pack. "But but loot 2.0 is free, you don't need the expansion", doesn't work as an excuse when its 1.5-2yrs post release.

I enjoyed about 10hours of the total time I put into the game, The rest of it was fueled by hope/nostalgia that never came to fruition. That's why people complain.

Quite the opposite. The complaints leveled at Blizzard about D3 were often legitimate. Even extreme diehards had issues with the state of the game post release. My point was that they likely would have made fewer mistakes during development had they not had an inflated sense of worth due to the rabidity of the post 2004 Blizzard fanbase. Too much hubris.

An endless grind is to be expected in an aRPG, to some extent. The difference is in how far away that carrot on the stick is. It's a very delicate balance. Too close and people lose interest, too far away and there is zero incentive.

If you spent hundreds of hours playing a game that you hated, you couldn't have hated it that much.

A lot of the hate is fuel by revisionist history of D2.

Ever manually farm the runes needed for an Enigma or HotO?

Protip: You are full of shit if you say yes.

If spamming the chat channel with you 10x SOJ (which where duped anyway) to buy one is some how better than browsing the auction house then go on with your bad self.

I don't even know who you're arguing with at this point. Nobody is even talking about that.

With that attitude (which many people here share) means that the direction of ARPG's will either be indie titles (that many people in this thread will refuse to give a chance because it's not from Blizz) or casualized trash (that many people in this thread will buy because it IS from Blizz). So in short, thanks for guaranteeing the genre stays niche and propping up the cash cow that is D3.

When you write stuff like that it would behoove you to actually give examples of what you're talking about. The only real challenger to D3 is PoE because it has closed servers, and that game isn't even finished yet. Most people aren't going to drop D3 to go grind away in an unfinished beta, so your condemnation is premature.

Other than that, who are the contenders? TL2? No servers. Grim Dawn? Not out yet and will also not have closed servers without a massive influx of $.

So while I am disappointed with how D3 was designed, I'm not so disappointed that I won't play it, and until a true challenger appears it's really the only option. Other than that, I think Loot 2.0, Nephalem Trials, Loot Runs, the Mystic, the Crusader, Paragon 2.0, and a randomized 5th act all look amazing and won't hesitate to buy the expansion.

The only question then is whether the release-state PoE (October) will be competing with regular ol' D3 or D3 with Loot/Paragon 2.0? Big difference, especially for people who quit playing D3 after a month and will be looking at it like a new game...

Unless GGG decides to change up their loot too (ala loot 2.0), i don't see them being a real contender.

From the sounds of loot 2.0, it should drastically increase the amount of good gear you get. GGG has been taking steps to make their drops worse, which is the opposite direction they should be heading.

I don't even know who you're arguing with at this point. Nobody is even talking about that.

There was just a bash post about the game (a year and a half after release) complaining about drop rates.

Almost every complaint about this game is tied to the loot and drop rate. They have fixed the loot, and the drop rate is about the same as D2 was for the good shit. To get a uber toon you had to spam the chat channel.

Thanks for setting me strait though.

He likes to pretend that Blizzard couldn't have learned from D2:LOD what players did like and didn't like.

Unless you operate under the delusion that the vast majority of players liked playing hours to only find out they messed their character up and can't complete hell mode and had to start over, or that players loved spamming the trade channel, or that operate under the delusion that there where infinite builds that worked for end game.

Then yes they didn't figure out what players didn't like from D2.

Somehow though they created a game that sold 15 million copies and took people 400 hours of gameplay to decide they didn't like it.

Good gear and - more importantly - interesting gear. The 2.0 legendaries alone are going to allow for more builds, and there will be skill tweaks/changes at that time too although they are undefined at this point.

As for GGG...that's why I'm waiting until release to start playing again. Everything will be in flux until then, so I can wait, and if they decide the right call is to take RNG to the extreme (something not unlike current D3), then I probably won't stick around because Blizzard already has them beat in the combat category.

Something along the lines of, "yeah we know those are bad stat affixes to add to gear, but they're supposed to be good for you LOL!!!!!"

Until they added Light Radius and Reduced Requirements mods, there were seriously ZERO bad affixes in PoE. Sure a piece of gear would roll an affix that was not desireable for your particular character, but that's to be expected. Now you get many pieces of gear that are no good for any character.

GGG has actually been quoted as saying that they added these two mods to dilute the mod pool even further. Such nonsense. If you want to see how bad it really is, watch Kripp spend ~20 exalted orbs and end up with +14% fire resist.

And drop rates are still worse than D2. We aren't just comparing the very very best drops in each game, but everything in between.

No, not nearly every complaint is about loot. We've been talking about broken builds and unbalanced classes for a couple pages now. But, no they haven't fixed the loot. Drop rates for gear are MUCH MUCH higher on the console version.

Your first comment was about the availability of high-powered, build-altering items in D2 (runes, HOTO, Enigma). My response was that Blizzard should have seen how popular that stuff was with players, even if it was all only available through dupes, and built it into D3 (which Loot 2.0 will attempt to do - they have NOT fixed D3 loot yet). The reason players loved playing with those items was because they were fun and powerful; I'd argue that without dupers making those items as widely available as they were, the game would have died out a lot sooner than it did. Items you can never obtain aren't exactly fun and Blizzard should have noted that.

So in fact D2 with all those powerful items everywhere isn't "revisionist history" because that was the actual state of the game for anyone who played on Bnet. Powerful gear was rampant and a lot of people fucking LOVED it and kept playing the game because of it. Your second comment wasn't regarding anything I was talking about so I'll just leave that alone.

Oh lord. Yes, please watch Kripp to get an accurate picture on how Path of Exile really works.

x2.

Loot 2.0 is going to make a lot of people happy once they finally roll it out.

Not sure what you mean. It was just a video of endgame crafting; kripp or someone else... It doesn't matter. Its just a demonstration of the odds and how much currency it takes.

It doesn't support your point well when the guy you're talking about typically walks around in the best gear there is. :p

Your average player isn't going to dump 20 exalts on a single item. He was trying to craft a BiS / best on server type of item.

But, yes. Crafting is similar to winning big on a slot machine.

yes. Farmed all the way to Zod. Took like 6 years and totally wasn't worth it. About a year later I realized I could buy runes online for like 4 for a dollar and did that instead. D3's biggest issue is just how good items can get.

Max main stat, Max vit, max attack speed, max crit, max crit damage, max allres = fucking impossible
Zod rune drop = Fucking impossible

Farming for either = waste of fucking time.

And when PoE comes out you bet your ass I'm going to spend 20 or 30 bucks to avoid a grind and use the auction house to buy my shit.

You didn't really even need to pay cash for D2 items. Hellforge runs were pretty damn common and I did them all the time. Plenty of chances for an Um, Mal, or Ist to drop which were great currency. I would dual box and simply run a level 1 through to A4 Hell to get the hellforge drop. Even after they put the level cap on the Ancients, I simply left the level 1 in town and let others get credit. So long as someone got credit, the level 1 got credit and moved on.

yeah but it was a dollar for 4 ruins of any level. Way easier and faster and felt even more rewarding knowing I saved that time.

I paid about 8 dollars in D2 for like 4 BiS items for my Sorc. Can't even get one BiS item in D3 for that i'd wager.

You'd wager correctly. And its still that way even after seeing just how useless Items are going to be after loot 2.0. I figured I'd be able to put my 200 million into something amazing after the console gear pics...but nope. Great shit still 2 billion and amazing stuff is either Off the auction house or 250.00 RMAH.

I'll stick with my good gear.

You do realize two of those things are just modifying existing code slightly (the 2.0's), one is a cut feature from the original release (mystic), one is something that the entire game should have had in the first place (randomized), and the remaining two I don't know enough about to comment. (Loot / Neph Trials). Oh and the crusader. Nice one completely new class. Why do people's expectations have to be so low?

I didn't do either of those, nor did I RMT, nor did I bot/hack. And the game was still thoroughly enjoyable, interesting, and replayable. Even at release.

Someone clearly never gave PoE a chance, or bothered to learn how the game works, let alone your questionable gaming behavior.

Actually I just listed the known features, it had nothing to do with my expectations. At this point, the game is what it is: I have gotten a ton of play time out of it, continue to play it, and I'm excited that it will be changing for the better regardless of when those features were supposed to be in the game. I was mad at first, mainly because I'm passionate about the series, but there's no point sitting around pissed off 24/7 because my expectations weren't met 1.5 years ago. It is what it is.

Loot runs are completely randomized environments/weather/enemies/bosses designed to be 20-minute (apparently) farming sessions. Sounds similar to PoE's maps system, but without having to farm maps. Should add a ton of replayability to the game.

Nephalem Trials are speed runs you can find randomly anywhere out in the world, where the goal is efficiency. You enter the realm and tear through everything as fast as you can, with scaling rewards at the end depending on how you did.

What's funny to me is that instead of fixing the content they have already created so people actually want to play it, they put out something like this "loot run," which to me sounds retarded.

Why not just fix up Whimsyshire so there's actually a reason to go in there? Why not add loot tables to the plethora of bosses they have in the game which are all meaningless? So much content in the game, yet there's no reason to run any of it.

That was their plan from the get-go--their vision of making a game where you just play it instead of farming certain spots. That plan backfired because everything felt meaningless. So they start to add in content that people can farm, which is what people want to do. So now people only play those sections of the game that have dependable drops.

It's just silly. They should have made loot tables like D2 had from the very beginning.

I wouldn't want to run bosses even if they had loot tables. I didn't find any of them to be fun or well designed. If they revamped bosses, I could see it.

For those that absolutely hate me, I've taken the liberty of writing this small warning: this is paranoia country, don't bother reading if you don't have a tin foil hat at the ready:

I paid about 8 dollars in D2 for like 4 BiS items for my Sorc. Can't even get one BiS item in D3 for that i'd wager.

I'm sure you could. But then a patch later it'll be not quite BiS. Then another patch after that it'll be complete trash. Then another patch and you'll get higher dps whites. Thus, the wow formula is applied to D3. Constant gear soft-resets means more RMAH sales. I am torn on whether D3's issues weren't actually planned, that they knew that it was broken at release, and that each patch was a planned "fix" to bring a resurgence of RMAH sales. I'm torn because I look at legendaries, which were originally just rares with flavor text, and BAD rares at that, and am honestly not sure if the team was that stupid or whether they simply were waiting to put out the real versions of them later.

Just looking at an item like Pox Faulds, which has a specific mechanic (for randomly farting), that is only for THAT item, yet is completely worthless otherwise. Was this something they never had planned pre-release? Something they honestly took the time to create between release and 1.0.4?

Or was it that they had the item complete/near-complete at release, and simply took the opportunity to clean it up in those 3 months, which also allowed them to rake in extra RMAH sales? Why else would they pull something like this:
As a reminder, these changes will only affect Legendary items that drop after the release of patch 1.0.4. This includes items that haven’t been identified yet (as items are rolled when they drop). With the extensive changes being made we can’t exactly translate old Legendary items to new. What might have been a decent item could become worse if we re-roll it, and vice-versa.

Why not reward players that managed to get those items pre-1.0.4? (and yes, I understand the argument that some hopefuls stockpiled uniques in hopes they would be improved later). But that's another Post-WoW-Blizz policy. Always, always, screw over the loyal playerbase. What happens when the loyal player hits 1, 2, FIVE years subscribed? An email thanking them. What happens when the un-loyal player quits? They get offered a free month of play, a level 80 character, AND a free mount. That is the blizzard policy.

Why work hard to retain your existing playerbase when you can seek out new players, who don't know your tricks, who don't know your gimmicks, who don't realize you've reused 90% of your art assets, who don't realize that this game is an absolute joke compared to its predecessor. That, that is not profitable. And profits are #1.

@Stevedave,
Thanks for backing up your claims instead of just resorting to spamming a meme or some trollish comment. This is much better than the others here simply saying "Its fun and you can't change my opinion" types, who don't have anything to back up their apparent bad-taste / blind-fandom; it truly is a breath of fresh air.
Maybe it's a commentary on how silly and repetitive 90% of the D3 achievements were.

Level a class to 60, TWICE. (What loser would do something like that, given the game's non-spec mechanics?)

that was funny the first couple times you posted it, but at this point.......

If you're not going to talk about shit, why bother replying?

So far there hasn't been a proven method of troll banishment. I'm attempting the beat it away with Kuul Story bro's. I have confidence it will work eventually but its an MP10 troll so its going to take a beating before it dies.

Obviously Blizzard's current developers don't share their fan's sentiments on Diablo 2.

@stevedave again, small font to let you skip quicker if you so choose:

Did you ever think that I actually am a fan of the old games, and that my anger/disgust at this title is due to my almost-unhealthy dedication to it (and to push it further, the genre, GAMING as a whole)? Perhaps if you felt this strongly about gaming you might feel the same way. Although my words may fall on deaf ears (eyes), that will not stop me from trying to point out the flaws of a short-sighted group that are the fans of games like this, ad-infinium.

The industry is turning the same corners that the movie and music industry went ~20-30years ago, where quality took a nose dive, where prices for less and less went up and up. The rise of the internet, piracy is what caused a massive spike in quality and drop in price of both of those industries (though that quality is quickly dropping again, and prices thankfully staying stagnant, except for theaters), and the video game industry is looking to make the same move, but without some piece of technology to "save" it from itself. Its hard to quantify the quality of game, and the industry uses this to the fullest extent. The absolutely corrupt and broken VG media industry is evidence of such.

I would rather the VG industry slump to last 1-5years instead of 10-20 years. If it takes 10,000 posts here, being one of a thousand1/10 metacritics, whatever, then so be it. I will "fight" the status quo that is this industry going to trash.

Stevedave, what hobby do you feel this passionately about? I know it isn't gaming, as your statements about RMT'ing have clearly stated. How strongly would you fight for your favorite past-time, despite the backlash?

(and to all, yes, I do realize this sounds like some crusader-holier-than-thou statement, but this is truly how I feel about Diablo, gaming, the industry, etc. Whether my efforts are misplaced, or misguided, that is for me to figure out, but this is the course of action I go)
