Diablo 3 - Beta thread

Offline D2 was able to pause, but not on Bnet even in a private solo game. I'm pretty sure D3 was intended to function similarly to D2 on Bnet.

I fully understand that he lives in the UK and was playing on the US servers, but that's not the point of the article.

The point is the fact that Blizzard's implementation of always-on prevented him from playing the game single-player. If I'm playing a single-player game, I should not need to worry about being kicked for idling, and I should at the very least be given the ability to pause the game. When was the last time a single-player game kicked you for idling? I personally have never had the issue, nor have I never been able to pause a single-player game.

And you clearly did not understand his suggestion in regards to giving players the option to create a separate, offline-only character that would never be able to connect to Blizzard's servers. You know, for those of us who just want to play alone. If Blizzard can't prevent rogue clients from accessing core systems, they really need to get their shit together.

I'm not sure if the way the server is handled now makes than an issue or not. If it really is just checking gear and drops, that shouldn't be hard, I would think.

Yeah I dunno either. I guess it was low priority and not worth doing.

Anyway, people keep insisting the game is single player, but I have yet to see an official claim that it is.

Here we go again. I understood it entirely.

When was the last time you left a game idling for over an hour? That's an incredibly stupid reason to bash a game.

They cannot make this "separate, offline only" stuff people want without remaking the entire game. The server handles the loot so that it doesn't turn into a dupe fuck fest like D2, and allowing an offline character would require putting the loot on the local system, which would invariably turn the game into another dupe and hack shit storm.

For all the people saying they won't buy it if it lacks offline play, there is another (like me) saying they won't buy it if it is the same hacking and duping bullshit as D2. You can't please everyone, so it's better to please the majority of people who are playing the game online.

I've never intentionally left a game idling for over an hour, but sometimes something will come up, and it takes longer to resolve than I thought, and so I'll leave the game paused for longer than I intended.

And what's wrong with duping and hacking, on an offline, single-player game? It doesn't affect anyone other than yourself. None of those duped/hacked characters/items will make it into the core game, unless Blizzard really fucks up.

Did you play D2? The online game was infested with dupes and hacks.

Yes, I did. And is it so hard to ask Blizzard to come up with some sort of server-side check that determines whether or not the character is registered and authorized for online play?

Town portal and run to the bathroom or do what you need to do. Otherwise if you log out and log back in you will be put in the same spot.

I suspect that they have come a long way since 1999 in preventing that from being possible. It's closer to WoW in terms of server infrastructure, and for all the many bad things WoW was, it was never infested with dupes or hacked items (though certainly with many botters, but that's not the same thing).

This. I don't think it unreasonable to assume Blizzard has learned how to prevent hacking/duping because of WoW.

*facepalm*

WoW is always-online. The hacking/duping that was possible in D2 is not possible in WoW or D3 because it is always online and generating the items server side. Your cure is the same as the disease you complain about.

Yeah, the item system is probably completely nonexistent on the client side and relies entirely on the server to generate/track them. The DRM of D3 isn't simply an authentication system.

...closed Battle.net was all on Blizzard servers as well, yet even unto this very day is infested with dupes, bots and hacks. The most egregious hacked item I can recall was the Hexing Small Charm of Immolating Arrow. They infested D2's USWest server for a very long time.

Shit, I messed that up, poor wording on my part.

I simply meant that it would be reasonable to assume that Blizzard's employees have gained additional insight in how to create a secure server infrastructure that prevented players from playing on official WoW servers whose accounts were created on private, unauthorized servers. Similar methods could be transferred over into preventing characters created offline in D3 from playing online.

I wasn't trying to reference WoW as the cure, just a source of knowledge/insight from which Blizzard could draw ideas/inspiration as to how to create a secure infrastructure that both prevented duping/hacking while also giving players the option to play by themselves offline.

Cures are oftentimes discovered through studying the disease itself, in any case.

IMO, there's always a "way" to accommodate offline mode while not affecting online mode. It probably wasn't done because the work required exceeded their forecast demand for offline mode. They had a working system with WoW already so that made the decision seem even easier.

Why waste time designing a single player aspect for a minor reason like pausing the game when they can put that time into designing a better multiplayer?

Because quite a few people enjoyed playing D2 alone? It's not like Blizzard is short on funds or anything, surely they could hire another 10-20 people and have them at least try to develop an offline portion? And at least that way they could say they helped create jobs. :p

People can still play the game alone. I play diablo 2 alone on battle.net with a private match.

Hiring is expensive. You are going to hire 10-20 people to create a point less option in a video game?

That post wasn't really serious. It would be fantastic if they did that, but I highly doubt they would.

But now we're back to where we started when I linked the article, so I'll just stop now.

If it was pointless, nobody would have mentioned it in the first place.

So if you play in private matches online in Diablo 2 and you are the only one playing how is that different than playing the single player other than maybe having your character deleted after 90 days, which wont happen in diablo 3, and not being able to pause the game for extended periods of time?

People don't like having to be online, because they are either (1) in some location without internet or (2) live in constant fear of their internet going down and having to do something else.

or (3) can't play mods like Meridian XL.

It's just an inconvenience some of us wish Blizzard would address.

Sorry but the argument "in some location without internet" or "live in constant fear" are mutepoints.

This is 2011. What person buying this game isn't going to have constant internet access and if people live in constant fear of their internet going down I doubt Diablo 3 will be most of their problems. They will probably be concerned with having their internet go down when they are actually doing something important.

1/1000 of people dont like having to be online. In all seriousness this issue is so a non-issue.

I'm on your side, man. I was just pointing out the issue that was raised in the RPS article.

Shit, Kotaku had a video of one of their console noob writers playing D3 from a sprint mobile hotspot while riding a train in the middle of Bumblefuck, NY.

Release in 2012, another Friedman unit (6 month delay).

Okay maybe 4 months, only 18 weeks. Yay.

Apparently the game delay is legit, and they are now "shooting for" Early 2012. http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/3229084903?page=2#32

Fucking Blizzard. They have mishandled this beta nonsense at every single step of the way. If the game isn't coming out for six months, don't release a beta and say it is mostly a stress test because they like the way the game works. If the "closed beta" is only for the press, don't say it is for everyone who opted in.

They have really dropped the ball on managing the community. Whatever, tons of games to spend my free time on with this fall in any event.

I don't know how Blizzard takes anyone that posts like this seriously though:

Now I have nothing to look forward to, I know I won't get into beta no game that has a set release date interests me. I also have no games to play they all sucks, by the time diablo is released the graphics are gonna be outdated even more :/ I just don't know what to do I'm sick to my stomach now

diablo 3, delayed??? excuse me while I go throw up

"Moot"? Nope, sorry, I have Comcast and it sucks sometimes.

I was expecting a January/February release even before this "delay" so it doesn't really bother me at all.

EDIT: Just send me a beta invite god dammit!

What a bunch of shit.

You know this is one of the reasons I'm starting to dislike Blizzard and its been going on for quite some time, the lack of commitment on release dates pisses me off. They use words like "soon" or "early" or "Its done when its done".

Do you see any other companies doing that? Hell no, they announce a game and then give you a solid release date, like Bethesda for example, months ago they told us Skyrim would be released on 11/11/11 with no BS and its stayed that way ever since.

I'm sick of Blizzards elitist attitude towards giving us release dates.

Here is an idea, don't let us know about the game until your ready to come out with it within six months. That way we don't have to wait over a year for your bullshit.

Valve. I need not say more.

Yeah it's just too bad no one developing the game was actually aware of this release date until they announced it to the public.
