It would seem the internet reports are true, there are PS3s on store shelves in larger numbers than you might think. Is this a sign of slowing demand? One analyst seems to think so and, after all, you can find a PS3 in stock in many places but you can’t find a Wii to save your life. I bought my 60gb PS3 for retail price right here and they have units in stock now.

"Our channel checks yesterday of 52 retail stores, from boutiques to big-box retailers, showed that 28 of the 52 stores had PS3 consoles in stock, while none had Wii consoles in stock," American Technology Research analyst Paul-Jon McNealy said in the research note.

I think Sony has sold all the $600 consoles to all the Sony !!!!!!z who could afford one (and the smaller BluRay enthusiast crowd). Supply has surpassed demand. I didn't believe the reports till I saw dozens of them in the local BestBuy here.

Sony will have alot of catching up to do by the time their 1st batch of AAA titles comes out. Hopefully they will fix their problems and also keep a tighter lid on what is said to the press as that hurts them as much as their technical problems.

Me, I'll be playing my Wii60 and my PC.
 
Well, to be brutally honest, there is no way to justify shelling out $800 for a 60GB unit, two games and an extra controller if it wasn't for my job. And, as already mentioned, this close after Christmas? That is just insane.
 
Yawn. So just over half the stores have it in stock then all of the sudden the sky is falling for the PS3. Try finding the 20gig anywhere. That's the best deal and I think more people are realizing it.

Reguardless, there isn't much reason to pick one up yet unless you want a blu-ray player, which it excells at. Once they start getting some better titles out, that should sell some systems. That's not going to happen until around March.

For a major console launch and having inventory sitting within less than a couple of months from launch is not good. They have a huge investment to pay off, along with lots of nervous shareholders. If it's not falling it's definitely got some major cracks in it.

I would like to add that it seems that Sony lately is damned if they do, damned if they don't. You don't see any news about how they have been able to get consoles out into customers hands at an incredible pace. If you weren't able to pick it up people would be screaming that Sony can't make many PS3's and that there are problems with it, yada yada yada. Don't get me wrong, they do deserve some of the flack that is sent their way, but it seems like most places, HardOCP included, has become extremely biased in their reporting and 'commentary' on anything Sony.

When the price drops and better games come out for the PS3, I think it'll start selling well. GTA5 anybody?

Consoles out to customers at an incredable pace? They just now shipped 2 mil, no better than the 360 did with it's release.
 
PS3's will start to sell when they have a few killer games out for it. Right now Nintendo has the wiimote gimmick and Virtual Console going for it. We play VC to Wii games 10:1.
 
It's either a sign of growing demand, or growing supply. So what? Is this some sort of mystery?
 
Just came back from the Best Buy store here in North Houston. There are 3 full pallets of PS3's that have been there since I was in there last week. When I quipped with the sales guy that this is a "pretty sad sight" he replied that they have 2 more pallets of them in the back room.

Not sure exactly how many per pallet, but I estimated about 30 per pallet.

There were no Wii's in stock, which was why I was there in the first place. :p

You find it hard to believe? Well let me tell you what happened to me. In October 2004 I bought a brand new Sony GDM-FW900 24" CRT monitor for 1000$ CAD from a US retailer. A couple a weeks of use the image was fuzzy and distorted so I called Sony Canada, there's a 5 years warranty for Sony for this product, this is what they told me. They can NOT uphold the warranty because I bought a product intended for US sales only. So after 30 minutes of yelling they gave me a US # to call and see what I could do from there. So I call Sony US and they tell me I could ship my screen to them for repair, shipping is 250$ US and because I am in Canada I would have to pay for shipping it back so it's another 250$ US, that's 500$ US. Now, check this out, they asked me to bundle everything that came with the monitor, cables, manuals... Since this product is new they would send me a new unit and take back mine. That's good but I am paying 500$ for it. Problem I told them I was using a highly shielded BNC cable I bought. That's when they told me I voided the warranty by doing that but after some bitching she gave me an RMA # anyways... Finally, I brought my screen to a local repair shop (someone I know) and he fixed the screen for 120$ CAD by ordering a part from Sony Canada.

That is bad customer service, but using a third party cable should not void your warranty. Thats like Sony saying you voided the warranty on your TV because you used monster cables to hook up your DVD player, XBOX, whatever.

For the 300th billion time, we report what is out there...we don't "make" the news.

Calling us "biased" because we can't find and equal amount of positive stories to post about Sony right now is uncalled for. :( Faulting "the media" for a lack of positive Sony stories is wrong.

Demand for the Wii is still up cause its actually affordable.

From people i know that have both PS3 and Wii or X360, they all dont really like thier ps3

walmart near where i live has had 2 ps3's for about 3 weeks now
 
Steve, I didn't mean to call you guys biased and for that I appoligize. You do just grab the news from around the net, most of which lately seems to be how many different ways can we write a story around there being PS3's on the market.

As for positives, most deal with Blu-ray. Sony #1 at boxoffice for 3 out of the past 5 years, this year breaking all records including most earned domestically and worldwide as well as most #1 films. All of which will be Blu-ray exclusive.

PS3 is still one of the most advanced Blu-ray players on the market and will remain so for at least this year.

PS3 when compared to the 360 launch is currently outpacing it and is still in only 2 markets.

PS3 is virtually silent for the vast majority of gamers. There have been a few that have been loud, which most people can get them exchanged. Funny enough you found the one comparison that found the PS3 to be louder even though his methods have already been ripped apart. I'll tack that up to being a pure coincidence. :)

PS3 can have hard drive upgraded with any sata laptop hard drive and it doesn't void warranty or require any type of modding.

PS2 outselling pretty much everyone.

Supposedly the 'adult dvd industry supports HD DVD' dispite the fact that the largest porn studio Vivid is releasing their first Blu-ray porn title in March. And the twist that Sony has been blocking porn producers from replication plants has also been debunked.

Good news is out there, most of which just isn't being reported on probably because having a bad guy makes for a better story. Just look at Microsoft.

Anyway, didn't mean to ruffle feathers. I always come here for news.

That honestly makes no sense to me. You can rip out the old hd, and put a new one in with no problems, but using a non sony component cable voids the warranty? What gives?

It just seems that people want to blame the messenger for Sony's woes.

Unfortunately for Sony right now, they are their own worst enemy. Lately it seems like each time they have a glimmer of something good happen, 25 bad things happen and steal their thunder. Or worse...a high profile company exec. has to pop up somewhere saying / doing something absolutely crazy and make matters worse.

Today for example, of the six high profile Sony stories out there, five are bad, one is good.

One of the bad stories was the CEO saying the PS3 is coming to Europe in April. The internet goes crazy about the PS3 being delayed from March to April in Europe. Sony has to release a statement saying "Our CEO meant "spring, not April...the PS3 is not delayed"...

...and that statement was the ONE good news item today...the PS3 isn't delayed. :D

You got me. But I put little faith into the actual person you talk to on the first level help line for Sony tech support, which is who told that person on AVS about the cables voiding the warranty.

Now that I agree with 190%. They are like that friend you get along with, but everytime they open up their mouth you just wish you could strap on a ballgag. I think actions speak louder than words, but that doesn't matter much if your CEO likes to scream a lot. :D

Unless there have been a lot of positive articles that they're not posting, I don't see how HardOCP can be biased. For the most part, all they do is post links to articles form other sites.

I've always thought the price point they were shooting for was too high. The Xbox360 already pushed the price up $100.00 over the last generation and now Sony pushed up 100 to 200 over that.

If you want a game system AND a Blu-ray drive, then this is a great deal (especially the cheaper version), but otherwise it's just too much.

They're not helped by the fact that the early games aren't any better looking than the Xbox games (and in some cases it seems like they may be worse). Why spend full price now when you can wait a year for the good titles and pay less (or at least collect some interest on your cash ;) )
 
Best news for PS3 is that the adult film industry says they will be supporting the Blu-Ray format :D
 
The XBOX-360 is the one for serious gamers, but for the kids and such that just want something fun it will be the Wii. I do not know if the Wii is shipping in quantaties yet, but I have not seen one in stock yet and any store. I have seen the PS3 is stock several places. Even Target had their display rack full yesterday, but everybody was drooling at the Wii display and asking if more were coming in soon.

Six months ago I figured the XBOX-260 would be #1 and PS3 would be #2 for the next generation consoles, but it looks like the Wii will pass everybody up and the PS3 will be in a solid last place. Considering the CPU and graphics on the Wii is only 50% faster than the Game Cube, that leaves it still slower than the PS2 and XBOX1. It is all about the controller, which in real life looks much smaller than I thought, and the playability of the games. It is just not in the same league as the PS3 or XBOX-360.

I'm waiting to see the hard numbers, but I am guessing the the demand has been very poor for the PS3, but actual shipping numbers for the Wii might be lower too. I really do not see price as being the big issue between the PS3 and Wii (or XBOX-360). If you want to see what people are willing to pay then look on E-bay. This shows the supply and demand of these consoles. Through most of December the PS3 was selling for pretty much retail price on Ebay, but they Wii was selling for $500-550. Prices have come down, but the Wii is still going for around $350. The PS3 is going for under retail price. This means people that waited past the return point are now dumping them at a loss. That is not a good sign.

I don't say I am a pro Wii or XBOX-360 fan-boy.... I'm a PC gamers all the way. I cant touch a FPS without a keyboard and mouse. :D

I agree. There isn't much of a demand for the PS3 around here but everybody wants a Wii. I was lucky enough to buy two of them two days ago. I kept one and sold the other on ebay. I'm already getting bored with it. :( I might sell it on eBay but the rest of my family really likes it and I don't know if I want to do that to them, you know?

IIRC the nintendo pushed something like 3x the PS3 in the initial shipment. No idea on follow up stuff.

agreed. But several things about the wii are very cool. Im considering grabbing one, and I dont even have a TV (20" monitor FTW!)

so hopefully by the time the ps3 is ready to be released over here, the bugs will be worked out, it will hopefully be cheaper than what they were planning on selling it for if the sales in the states isnt so good and they will clean up as europe is just itching to get its hands on the ps3, me included.

Where did you pull this out of? Was it thin air, a fact sheet or somewhere else?
Regardless, yes, the Wii was a great way for Nintendo to bundle an accessory that otherwise would not have been purchased with an upgraded system (name 1 accessory/add-on that has ever had commercial success to where almost became standard for the console...and if you can, then name another).

Maybe before, but now? No one knows yet. Comparing past successes with this new console means nothing.

I'm guessing it won't be cheaper, but actually more expensive than the US. In April, there still won't be that many games out for it, and just as many good games as there are now. The 2nd half of the year is when things should pick up, but there still won't be any proven AAA titles that are exclusive and GT5 is quite a ways away (I'll wager on 2Q 2008 the earliest).

This is very true as I saw the interview with the Vivid CEO. :)

In all seriousness, EB Games has PS3's in stock and are not moving. I was at my local one this weekend (Sunday) and they got a shipment the prior Tuesday (5) and had five left on Sunday. That is pretty weak considering you couldn't find a Wii or any accessories at any store.

I thought it was the other way around. Didn't Sony at first shun them cause of their "content", but later changed their tune when the adult industry started pimping HD-DVD?

Price is a huge one. Games is another. Right now graphics wise the ps3 is really no better then the 360 that has a much better selection and a proven online plan. Only thing your really getting is blue ray which most people that I know could care less about. For one a lot of people still don't have hdtvs. For another a lot of people want to wait untill one side of the bd/hd battle has won.

I've seen ps3s in stock in my area for weeks. They are just collecting dust. Still have trouble finding wii remotes and shit and wiis are still near impossible to find.

Personaly I've been playing through the games I have for the 360(shit load of good ones) and on the wii(has a nice little selection of good games). I'll consider a ps3 when the price comes down some and it gives me a reason to buy it(games that I can only play on it). Also the linux on the ps3 is real interesting but the system is not worth 600 bucks for a linux box.
 
It's shaping up to be that many gamers will own a Wii and an Xbox 360 or PS3. With Xbox 360's better selection of games and cheaper price it has kept its Xbox fanbase and gathered a large portion of PS3 users. I doubt the number of Xbox 360 and PS3 owners, at least for the first couple of years will be high.
 
Last time I checked that our local Lamborghini dealership is having a hard time moving their products so they must be horrible sellers :rolleyes: They constantly have Murcielagos and Gallardo's in their lot.... damn, they can't move these things.
