Dell U2410

No U2410 anymore. Adio green pink tint, fuzzy picture and terrible Dell ...

Anyone has an recommendation for 1920x1200 24'' with white color from left to right?

I was looking today at HP LP1740 5 years old LCD and that was eye releving white and color saturation and it is a 6-bit panel +2 FRC...

Cheers,

Marin
The A01 versions apparently fixed those problems as far as I can tell.

THe only fix as far as I know in the A01 firmware was for the dithering in sRGB mode. The tint was not fixed in this revision. My u2410 appears to be tint free though.

Ahh I see. The people who've posted recently about their A01 seem to be pretty happy with the monitor though. I plan to buy two to replace my 2405 and 2001.

NEC 2490WUXi, but you'll pay twice the amount as the U2410, if you can even find one.

I think perhaps your bad experience has tainted your view a bit, and I fully understand that (been on the Dell Community forums myself as Gecks). However, with the latest firmware and dithering fixed, this is an excellent monitor for the price, I don't think there is much that compares overall. When you factor in all the connections from VGA to DP, wide gamut, excellent RGB modes, game modes, full custom mode...it offers alot.

I also think the tint issue is likely overblown. I've had three U2410s and none had any tint. I also had a refurb (was supposed to be a flashed A01) and that did have bad tint, but it was returned at zero cost to me. Dell customer support in Canada has been absolutely fantastic for me, so perhaps it is a regional thing? Polite, prompt and easy to deal with.

I find the Standard mode has a pink tint overall but calibration with a Spyder 3 fixes that. With the dithering fixed, I pretty much just use Adobe RGB for everything and it looks amazing even at factory settings.

Good luck with your search. There are some new monitors coming out this year so you could always wait. There is apparently a new HP IPS panel coming out, 24", 1920x1200. Lol, I am sure it will have issues too...they all seem to. ;)

I am not in Canada, yes I would exchange it until good one comes, but I must say that for text the U2410 is not good, panel looks dirty all the time. We don't have Dell directly here, but HP yes. I have read also that LP2475W has different coating and better picture although nowdays hard to source.

Cheers,

Marin

I'm really debating on sending mine back because of the horible coating.

It does appear slightly dirtier than other monitors (like TN panel) but it is very close to my old Viewsonic (PVA panel). It doesn't really bother me, though I did notice it at first.

The LP2475W has the same green/pink tint issues as the U2410 - same panel.

I think here is something really fishy about the flash update!

The dithering issue was, from the A01 update, fixed in september 2009. Why did Mr. Chris M. on the Dell forum knew nothing about it, if the issue exists at all and if it can be fixed. Aparently it exists and it can be fixed as the fix was available in september. But to whoom?

If some Chinese wouldn't give the FW to the new, I wouldn't have a dithering fixed today. But the same Chris M. says today that we should not flash the monitor. If we do we loose the warranty. But this is fishy! Why would I loose the warranty to fix a defect in monitor? Why they don't give us the fix legally? Why going through burden of taking monitor back and sending a refurbished one back?

That is, if you are in US. I am from Slovenia and I have 2 such monitors. My seller in Slovenia (Dell is not here at all just the Dell distributers) told me he can not exchange it because there are no known defects in A00. Well there are, dithering is one of them. And the A01 fixes it, as I have flashed one of the monitors and the picture is a little better now, the dithering is gone and the calibration using Spyder3 was better (don't know why).

Why on Earth would a company want the expenses of sending things back what you can do at home? And for one, I am not from US and I can not go and send monitor back, I don't have a place to send it at all. And for fixing Dell mistakes I can now "pay" loosing the warranty.

I think what I have written speaks for itself. This is certanly the last monitor I bought from them and i hope others see the crap of this company also. Lucky some Chinese "pirate" give me the fix the company who sold me the monitor denied it and later told me I loose warranty if I apply it.

And on top of that the fix was available from september 2009!

I'll patch my other monitor, hope everything goes well, and I something else won't break down in next 2 years ustil my warranty runs out. Just because I was such a naughty naughty boy to play with matches the big Dell mama wouldn't allo me.

And before anybody says it is risk involved in flashing. It is. But I can flash my motherboard, photo, etc. I can not flash my monitor. Because it was not said only we do not exchange it if the flash goes wrong, but you loose your warranty if you apply this flash.

THEN GIVE US THE APPROVED ONE!

Bah!

Jerry

PS - I would post this on the Dell forum but I didn't get activation code to my email so I can not. If anybody is logged in there I give permission to post my letter over there.

I also do not understand why dell will not let end users flash the firmware on LCDs. Especially for an obvious problem like this where is was to fix a problem. A few bad flashes is cheaper than having everyone send in there monitor to be flashed by them. To me it seems no different from letting people update the bios on there pc. It is just as risky. I guess dell has there reasons. Who knows.

@jerry2, wagsrules - I just posted essentially what you guys said as well to Dell and Chris M on the Dell forum (I'm Gecks there).

Everyone I'm sure is asking the same exact thing. Stupid of a large company to try and keep 'control' of the issue when it has already spun out of their hands.

There could be myriad reasons for them not to release it publicly. Likely litigation-based/culpability would be my guess.

We'll see if we get an answer from them.

As to the firmware, screw it - I'd rather have a flashed, non-warranty monitor that works properly than one that has annoying dithering and a warranty. Oh the irony!!

Yes, I am waiting f there would be a GOOD EXPLANATION like firmware is beta and it has a nasty bug that shows after 1 year kind of thing... If I do not hear a good explanation I'll flash the second one. As you said, it is better to have a no warranty monitor than a broken one. And the dithering in sRGB is really an issue for my web work :-( And it seemed there is NO PHISICAL NEED to buy A01.

Thank you anynymous Chinese guy! I think there are many sides to hacking, not only one.

If anybody else flashes, I got really scared the first time, it flashed OK and then "rebooted" OK but when I turned off monitor I couldn't turn it on again. I thought I have bricked it. But after taking power cord out and plug it back in it worked and since now also works with the button. Just to warn not to wet the pants, I almost did...

i know, it's ironic that if you fix your monitor yourself and save everyone extra cost and hastle you will void your warranty for a product that already came broken. Doesn't seem fair does it?

BTW, I flashed mine and the dithering is gone, fixed. No fuss, no muss.

They can't! They don't track firmware version on monitors and it happend a lot times that you get older firmware on exchange. So if you send them A00, no way can the distributer warranty that they will receive A01. What a company!

Perhaps you should shift your focus to the HP LP2475w instead. It's got better blacks and higher contrast, and very low input lag, less than 4ms typical with the new revision equipped with the H-IPS panel. It's ~ $520 at B&H Photo/Video (they have the same LCD return policy as TD - return with any defects within 14 days and you'll get an exchange for another). That's what I'm getting instead.

But how is the sRGB mode now in terms of color, do they look realistic?

But how is the sRGB mode now in terms of color, do they look realistic?

Both RGB modes on this monitor are excellent. The monitor comes with a factory calibration sheet showing gamma curves with DeltaE values under 5.0, mine were mostly at or under 2.0 for both RGB modes. Meaning they look good out of the box.

The dithering fix has not affected this, the curves are the same. Only dark greys and blacks look perfect now.

The sRGB setting is quite neutral color-wise, I prefer the Adobe RGB setting for most tasks and gaming.

I can only get a A01 if i send a A00 back? Is that it?

I see people talking about flashing their monitor, is this procedure risky?

Ok, I got picked up from FedEx warehouse since I missed the delivery today. Couple things.

1. A01 on the box. Assembled in Mexico.
2. No any sticker on the back of the panel. Can't find out if its an actual A01. You guys have stickers on the panel?
3. The panel appears to be new, IMO.
4. I still like my 2007wfp better, but U2410 needs to be calibrated.

Ok, this new baby is giving me chills already, it might go back if don't get it fixed or smth. Issues..

1. Colors are different from left to right and top to bottom. Wtf?
2. Open a jpg or smth and get a totally different colors. Wtf?

Yes, LP2475W, though green/pink tint issues also. But if coating if different, it worth the hassle.

The different colors in jpg are a matter of the way windows does color management. It's not the screen. However, top to bottom/left to right colors might be a screen issue. does it look green/pink?

I'm noticing more everyday that mine has warmer whites at the bottom, and cooler at the top. It's not enough for me to send back, because it's perfect left to right. But...what the hell? I've seen TN panels with better uniformity. However, the color reproduction is pretty solid, especially in sRGB. Saving grace.

Hi guys, I just had my old monitor (p-mva with 0 input lag) die. I'm looking to replace it, but I have a few questions because I'm new to dell.

1. How is dell's return/exchange policy with dead/stuck pixels?
2. How is the input lag on this monitor? Is there a game mode?
3. I've heard there are issues with the wide gamut on this monitor. Will this be a huge problem in games?
4. Are there spectacular reviews of this monitor somewhere? I wish these sorts of threads had reviews in the first post :/

Thanks for the help :)

1. 0 lit pixels, BUT up to 6 dead. In reality they'll probably change it regardless, if you complain about dead pixels, so there's no worry there. The main concern, when exchanging, is (even when you ask for new) the exchange tends to come from a pool of refurbs which carry a greater risk of pixel problems or gradation tint. (Because people return those screens, and Dell will send them out as replacements to you). It took me 5 exchanges to get something I'm very happy with. The U2410 is an excellent screen if you can avoid dead pixels and gradation tint.

2. The input lag of this monitor is wrongly reported as higher than it is on a lot of sites because they make the mistake of both using timers (which tend not to be accurate) and, worse, measuring one section of the screen only (where the timer sits). After multiple measurements my best estimate against a CRT is the average lag is 2/3rd's of a frame, and the peak lag is 1 and a 1/3rd frames behind. Since the U2410 runs at 60Hz, that means 1 frame is equal to 16.6ms, so the average lag is around 11ms and the peak lag is about 22ms in game mode. The average is very acceptable and makes it a good compromise for people who can't live with TN panels, but those peaks mean you'll still want a 120Hz TN panel if you're a serious online gamer etc. The ghosting performance on the U2410 is very good.

3. It depends. The Wide Gamut "saturated look" can actually make some games look better IMO, but there's always sRGB mode. The only time you would really want gaming mode is for latency critical online games. For everything else sRGB would be usable, and avoid the issues associated with wide gamut, at least until there's better software support for it, either from the graphics card companies, game devs, or Microsoft etc.

4. If you read forum threads (here and elsewhere) you'll tend to get a FAR better idea of this monitor than any review site will give you. Granted, it will be slanted towards a more negative side, but you'll still have a better idea for the most part. Since most "reviewers" are dependent on free hardware for review and are advertising based they're mostly not going to bite the hand which feeds them.

The reviews out there tend not to mention the gradation tint problem, which is a problem a significant percentage of U2410 panels are prone to. Ok, maybe their review panel was free of the issue (many are).. But most reviews also fail to even notice the dither issue present in sRGB/Adobe mode, something which all Firmware Rev A00 U2410's suffer from. If they're that half arsed when it comes to visuals I'm not sure I'd put too much faith in anything they say..

Anyway, the U2410 is a very good screen. Some of Dells customer policies (refusing panel exchange due to gradation tint issues and voiding your warranty if you fix their faulty A00 firmware by flashing to A01 yourself) are the only bad things I have to say about it, other than the antiglare coating is a bit thick, and the fact that a decent percentage of panels seem prone to these gradation tints (where the left and right sides go from a green to pink shade when looking at white or grey backgrounds). If you're picky about screen quality (most people aren't, even though they think they are, which is why Dell can get away with selling the U2410 with this issue) then it's something to be aware of. Otherwise the U2410 is a very good screen, and well priced in the USA, although overpriced in Europe (where it costs more often around the $900 mark).

The bottom is like more green and top more white, LOL. Visible on gray background with lots of text. Anyways, I was messing around with settings, but cannot get the way I want, or I just need to get used to it. I'm already getting pretty bad eyestrain from this new panel. So I dunno, I guess I am keeping it IMO. It has no dead or stuck pixels and overall its pretty good with minor issues. Hope I'll get used to it, if not, than might be a real issue.

Some panel uniformity variation is to be expected with LCD screens, especially larger ones. If you look hard, you'll likely find some.

What setting are you using?

I find that the RGB modes are by far the best modes for this monitor (unless you are doing color managed work in Photoshop, etc.).

Try both sRGB and Adobe RGB. I use the latter most of the time.

I am still working on the settings. The factory settings were completely unusable. It's like the whole screen was green. So terrible that I can't even describe. I do however work with Photoshop and that's why I am trying to set this up correctly.

This is what I use.

Color Format: RGB
Preset: Custom Color (Grain - default, Offset - 50, 25, 55, Hue - default, Saturation - 40, 50, 40, 40, 40, 40.
Brightness: 50
Contrast: 40

If you look on the left side of the monitor just behind the card slot, there is a little (2"x2.5") panel that you can pull out. It has the sticker with model no., manuf. date, S/N, rev. no., and country of assembly.

I received my U2410 yesterday after ordering it from Dell on the 13th for $480 plus taxes and recycling fee. It's an A01 assembled in Mexico in Dec 09. No dead pixels and no tint problems!

The only annoying thing was discovering, after sitting at home for 3.5 hours waiting for delivery, that Purolator does not do deliveries to residential areas in my town and instead dropped it off at their local agent in the Greyhound office.

One question. Can someone confirm that the audio out connector will have audio o/p available if you connect an XBox or DVD player via the HDMI connector?

The included manual doesn't say anything regarding this.

Discovered a bunch of flashing dead green pixels. Called Dell. They sending me the new one. We'll see.

In general, how does the Dell U2410 perform in gaming? Is there any noticeable input lag? Does the 6ms respose time cripple it in FPS games, causing ghosting effects?

It works great with my PS3 on hdmi port. Sound comes out from audio output.

Wow, I think you're the first to have a positive reaction from this. I just read some comments and most of it were negative. Any reason for that abnomaly?

In my experience, there was really no problem using my PS3 with my Dell U2410. I plugged in the HDMI calbe and I used the audio output port to plug my computer speakers.

I use gaming mode, I can't see any noticeable difference compare as when I play on my Sharp Aquos. I play FPS like COD Modern Warfare 2 and Killzone 2 and it works fine for me.

Received my brand new replacement today. It's a A01, made in Mexico, Dec 09. The screen isn't green now. I think it's calibrated better. I guess it's pretty safe to order now if you want the A01.. Nice panel though..
