dell shipped two 2407s

All these people with these "morals" are probably the ones that don't want to advance the world and always vote against things like stem-cell research, etc.. In other words, religious nut-jobs.

You think Dell is honest? These big corporations steal millions and will steal at every opportunity they get. Pff, let's get real people, it's 21st century, not 1 A.D. Besides, morals are nothing but opinions about what is right and wrong. And in this case, stealing from a multi-billion dollar greedy corporation is right if they made the mistake.

well. once again you are rationalizing to make yourself feel better about the materialistic and warped way you relate to the world.

what is so 'complicated' about the situation under discussion?? it is wrong and dishonest when you pay for 1... and keeping the 2nd sent to you which was obviously in error. your 'interpretations' of what is right and wrong unfortunately depend on how you were brought up - what your parents pass on to you... how other people treat you etc. sure.. i can accept that to an extent. however, honesty is not a complicated concept (to you it seems to be so). it is not open to 'interpretations'. it is one of those things which 'just is'. it without a doubt dishonest to keep somehting sent to you in error and not paying for it. especially if it will cost you nothign to send it back. if the company tells you to keep it.. so you get lucky. i wont even go into explaining to concept of 'integrity' ....

someone somewhere is paying for it.. there is no such thing as a free lunch. whether anyone is going to be 'harmed' by it is irrelevant. it has nothing to do with it.

im not even talking about religion. or rule books or whatever the crap you are on about. simple black and white RIGHT AND WRONG.

i never indicated that i wanted to 'save the world' or even try to get anyone to adopt my viewpoint. this is a public forum and i wanted to express my viewpoint as you have yourself.

to rebutt your point - just because the majority are depraved and dishonest... does that mean that you have to be as well just to 'fit in'? why do you have to lower yourself and your ideals just because people around you are doing it? GET A SPINE!! be a real man. Principles, integrity , honesty... forgotten concepts.

your post is totally preposterous with regard to the 'survival of the fittest' concept. it is once again your way of making yourself believe you somehow are doing the right thing by dishonestly keeping a monitor sent to you in error!! someone somewhere will be held accountable for that error.

enough of this.... you crack me up. i would hate to see what you teach your children or future children.

Lol, the 'warped way I relate to the world'? You have no idea who you're taking to, mister. Trust me, in day to day life I am a flat out saint. I'm always helping people, listening to people's problems, making sure I treat people fairly, etc... I'm completely DEVOID of prejudice or anything like that when it comes to relating to the average person. Racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism - all words that don't exist in my dictionary. To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if I am a far better citizen than even you are making out to be, Mr. Holier-Than-Thou. And you know what makes me superior to you? I don't do what I do out of any freaking moral obligation or because I was BROUGHT UP to behave a certain way. From the age of about 8, I've always had my own mind, and my parents have been great in letting me express that. No, I do what I do out of the goodness of my own heart, and because I actually enjoy helping people. Don't bring this freaking 'be a man' shite into the conversation, you ignoramus. Be a man? Wtf? Are you living in the stone-age or something? What has keeping a monitor got to do with 'being a man'? You carry on 'being a man,' and I'll carry on getting rich off bozos like you. Idiot. Depraved and dishonest? God, you're a retard if ever there was one.

Anyway, in balance with all my 'saintly qualities,' I am a realist. I know Dell doesn't care about me. Point in case - say for example I smashed my LCD by mistake, but I had no insurance or coverage on it. Do you think Dell would replace my monitor out of the goodness of their hearts? Uh, let me think about that - NO. So why should I go out of my way to make up for someone elses mistake? I shouldn't - and I don't give a f'cking crap how righteous you want to be, you would be an idiot for doing it. But if it makes you better, at least you'd be an honest idiot! :p I didn't enter this discussion with the intention of being nasty, but if there's one thing I can't stand, it's stagnated, ignorant people who refuse to see anything other than what they have been conditioned to believe.

It's people like YOU who screw the world up. People who only have one way of f'cking thinking, and are blind to all other sides of the story. Life consists of shades of grey. Human nature proves this. Why the hell do you think we are even able to have this debate? Why are humans free to think and form their own conclusions? EVERYTHING is based on our own views. As a society, of course there are certain morals and values we should all adopt in order to well, keep the world running I suppose. But circumstances like these really are not serious enough for anyone to be taking the moral high-ground. We aren't taking candy from a baby here. Dell will probably make $1000 profit, in less than an hour. So why return the montior, when ordinary people like us could benefit from an extra monitor far more than Dell? Life is not linear - it's relative. How can you possibly justify living your life by a strick moral conduct when life is always changing? It just doesn't make sense to me, sorry.

And by 'survival of the fittest,' I meant that in order to survive in today's society, you sometimes have to let go of the idealist way of thinking. If you can't beat your enemy, join them, as they say. And then proceed to wipe the fucking floor with them.

Of COURSE there are things that are flat out wrong. Murder, rape, etc... Stealing's wrong too. But there is a difference between walking into a shop, and sprinting back out with a 15" monitor under your arm, and being sent an extra monitor after someone's mess up. As someone said earlier, as far as I'm concerned, once it is given to me and is sitting in my property, that's all the permission I need.

I don't need to justify anything to myself. I know where I am coming from, and I know that $1000 to a multi-billion dollar company means fuck all. Whereas to me, it means a lot. And to the small electronics store down the street, it means a lot. You might see it as corrupt - I see it as taking advantage of the situation. And as long as no one's going to suffer as a result of my greed (and I admit, it is greed) - I'm perfectly content to reap the rewards of the situation. No skin off my nose. Couldn't give a crap. I doubt anyone's losing their job over this (unless it's been a regular occurence, which is their own incompetence). It's all gravy, baby.

Pardon the swearing, but singsing has been riling me up for a while. I respect people's opinions when they are coherent, open-minded and non-offensive - but all he has done is be rude, closed-minded and ignorant. To most other participants in this thread, thanks for being civil. It's always good to have a debate. :)

Considering i'm an athiest, you failed horribly. I can't believe there is actually a debate about returning something that doesn't belong to you. <sigh>

You know, it's good to know that there are still decent human beings in the world. Here in NY, there was a local story about a teenager who found 24K in cash in a movie theater, and guess what he did. He returned it. I'm sure all you dirtbags would have been like "Survival of the fittest...LOLZ...finders keepers!!!" etc. Well, it's still comforting to know that good people are still out there that don't take advantage of peoples mistakes and try to justify it because other dirtbags would do the same thing or say that the times we live in people would keep it. As if that makes it alright.

You know the funny thing. Many people were calling him stupid for doing that. Including so called religious people. I guess some of us have a conscience. Let's just hope you don't lose something valuable and some guy decides to keep it. I mean, you can rationalize it by saying Dell is a big company or whatever, but trust me, some other jerk can one up you and rationalize it further and say to himself "Well I don't know that guy personally, their loss."

They actually would replace it. Dell monitors come with a 3 yr warranty, including exchanges. My first 2407 cracked and they replaced it.

you know what... im kind of glad there is someone here who at least can see what is going on here.

i agree that life is complicated and many shades of grey as ravane puts it. however... the central issue we are talking about is honesty in a relatively simple situation.

this ravane guy has just spent some time repeating the same theme again and again... rationalizing this way and that way. its pretty narcissistic view of life ... 'me me me me me'. Ravane says he loves helping people etc... and even says he is better than me etc... but then he goes on to contradict himself by saying he is very prepared to 'take advantage of the situation' and 'reap the rewards'.... as if somehow it is a competition to see who can screw whom the most... the pervading theme is - 'as long as i feel good about myself... i must be doing the right thing'.

to be honest... it is pointless to continue this 'debate'. people will continue to screw each other and then justify it to themselves that somehow they had to get on top.

although this has been an interesting 'discussion'... it also saddens me to see this kind of materialistic, narcissistic and selfish attitude is now being accepted as the 'norm' and we all must be like this to 'survive as the fittest'.

If Dell corporation found $24,000 of my money, do you honestly believe they would give it back? When large corporations make mistakes, they deserve to pay for it, period.

Plus people need to understand the difference when a normal joe looses something, and when a multi-billion dollar company makes a mistake by sending two of the same items. Their fault, their blame, they loose money. If Dell founder was honest, and had all these good morals, he probably wouldn't have Dell company right now. Being honest and fair won't get you anywhere in life, especially in such a clear situation like this.

Oh and BTW, when I loose something, I say goodbye to that item immediately. It's ultimately my fault I lost that item, so I pay for it.

so when do you decide that the loss for the other party is big enough to make it wrong for you to steal from them? where do you draw the line??? do you assess each case as it occurs?? or is it 'flexible'.... you just tailor it to your own desires at the time?

i would like to think that i got somewhere in life without having to behave like what has been described as necessary to 'survive as the fittest'. you must lead a pretty crappy existence if being honest and fair gets you into the gutter...

fortunately i dont live in such a place. here where i live, there are good decent human beings around.

Thank you to everyone for the entertaining read. I was bored and this sure filled 10 minutes. BTW, it is interesting the justification people use on both sides. Interesting indeed. Oh, and to the OP Dell will find it and charge you. And to whoever said it is illegal to charge him, please read some business law on the topic before posting absolute falshoods on a forum. Aren't internet hoaxes bad enough ?

Yeah yeah yeah, I know this is a little late, but I'm just now getting to it...and it's still relevant:

What do you do when you receive merchandise that you didn’t order? According to the Federal Trade Commission, you don’t have to pay for it. Federal laws prohibit mailing unordered merchandise to consumers and then demanding payment.

Here are some questions and answers about dealing with unordered merchandise.

Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?

A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.

Q. Must I notify the seller if I keep unordered merchandise without paying for it?

A. You have no legal obligation to notify the seller. However, it is a good idea to write a letter to the company stating that you didn’t order the item and, therefore, you have a legal right to keep it for free. This may discourage the seller from sending you bills or dunning notices, or it may help clear up an honest error. Send your letter by certified mail. Keep the return receipt and a copy of the letter for your records. You may need it later.

It might be a good idea for you to take your own advice and "please read some business law on the topic before posting absolute falsehoods on a forum". They even give tips on returning merch if you so desire.

Also, I would have probably kept the monitor. I'm not going to justify it or try to claim my stance is superior somehow, that's just what I would have done. Props to you for returning it though. You're a better man/woman/animal/random internet person than me.

That's pretty ignorant. Even when dealing with morals, some things are clear cut. Keeping something that isn't rightfully yours is wrong, regardless of your belief. Stealing is stealing; act accordingly.

You're assuming that all of the people on this world have the same view of property rights - not all cultures recognize property rights. In their eyes, it would not be stealing or even wrong.

This has to be the most ridiculous thread I have read, props to the person who looked up the biz law. I will remember that in the future.

Keeping a 24" LCD from Dell is like taking a old dirty sock from my apartment.....it won't be missed or noticed in Dell financial reports, nor would miss or even notice an old dirty sock.

If this happens everyday then of course Dell may notice but then it is their responsibility to get it to stop not the consumers responsibility to waste their time and send it back.

Obvoiusly wealth is relative and the U.S. govt. seems to think so also..........INCOME TAX.

It's not stealing, we just capitalize on their mistakes. :p The person didn't go to Dell warehouse, and take 2 monitors for the price of one. Instead, Dell decided to ship him two monitors for the price of one.

Besides, if Dell keeps sending people all these double orders, then I guess their financial department doesn't even feel the difference. If this really hurts Dell, then I guess that's a call to develop a better and more accurate shipping system.

BTW again try to understand between doing this with a multi-billion corporation or a little business, or an individual. Completely different issues.

morals = teh l4m3
keep free monitor = teh pwn

and that my friends, is logic.

If the worst thing you ever did was decide to keep an extra lcd monitor that Dell sent to then you would be ok in my book. For people saying that keeping the monitor is stealing you are completely wrong. Perhaps Dell did not purposefully send you the extra monitor, but that is not your fault at all. Just because good things don't happen alot doesn't mean having something good like this happen is a bad thing. I would have just kept it in the box and watched my credit card account for a second charge and if everything was fine I would use it or sell it. If they tried to charge me for it I would send it back and get a refund. If Dell realized their mistake then give it back to them.

I ordered a mobo from NewEgg and they sent me the upgraded model instead. I called to let them know and they said I could keep it instead. It was only a $20 difference, but with the manpower and time to return and replace, it was cheaper to tell me to keep it.

I ordered the first 3 seasons of Stargate SG-1 from Amazon.com and had it sent 3-day UPS. I tracked it and saw it was delivered but when I went to get it, there was no package. UPS delivered it to the wrong place. I called Amazon and they sent a new shipment to me overnight. Two days later I had my replacement package and the original package. I called Amazon and told them and they sent me a UPS return shipping label.

I ordered some cigars from JRCigars.com and I was sent a more expensive brand. I called to notify them and they said I could keep them instead if I wanted to. Very nice.

I say always call and let the company know, most of the time your honesty will be rewarded. It is just good karma.

On my son-in-law's last order from NewEgg, the shipped a second 320GB HD... not on the invoice, packing slip, not charge for it or anything. He called them and they did some checking - called him back abou an hour later and said "Well we can't see where in our system you were shipped two drives, go ahead an keep the drive, thanks for shopping NewEgg".

In the past I've found that letting the company know what happend works out to your advantage - I've been sent prepaid shipping labes, I've been told "An early happy birthday! Thank you for letting us know". Most companies will appreciate it. I would feel guilty not saying anything over time, but that's me - to each his own.

The large bold phrase hould solve the arguement at hand, and well said.

It would be the appropiate thing to tell the manufacturer or retailer that they shipped you an extra by mistake. Morally, it is the right thing to do.

After reading all six pages i've concluded that the OP did contact dell and they do not have on record sending him a second one, nor did they tell him what to do with it. I'd hold onto it for a few weeks and if you don't hear from them, i'd consider it a gift.

Everyone else has covered all the scenarios.

I personally would of called them and let them know like the OP. I'm just surprised Dell never said what to do with the other monitor.

I almost shit myself a few months ago when the UPS guy tried to deliver 2 Dell boxes to my address, i was frantic checking my dell account and looking over every CC to make sure i didn't get hacked. Come to find out, the UPS guy just had the wrong house ;)

I think this is a problem in today's society, (issues such as gay rights, abortions, stem cell research, etc.) people *cough* Republican Party *cough* seem to think morals/ideals/ways of life *cough*democary in Iraq*cough* need to be placed upon other people, forcefully at times. This is why I posted that "to each his own" was a good way to look at this. (Sorry for involving these topics, I know this situation is hard to compare with what I mentioned.)

Leans what way? If you send somebody something that they didn't order, it's a gift! Even if you didn't do it intentionally, you still sent it to them, therefore it's there. They did NOT steal it. Do you know what could happen if they didn't have laws like that to protect the consumer?

Companies could just send out shit without your knowledge and you would have to pay for it? What if you didn't get it? What if it was left on your doorstep when you weren't home and it was stolen? They sent it to your house. You didn't get it, but hey, it was at your house, here's the bill. Fuck that. They fucked up and sent it to your house, legally it's YOURS, no longer property of Dell (or any other company for that matter).

If you want to, you can call them up and let them know that they sent you one and send it back if you want, but that doesn't make you any better of a person to anyone but yourself.

Actually I agree with you,I am all for protecting the consumer.I just hope the laws up here
in Canada are the same.I cant seem to find anything that says we are though.

Quick and easy:
Don't ask, don't tell.

This situation is totally a non-moral issue. God/karma has nothing to do with it.
You're an innocent by-stander that happens to stumble upon a good bit of luck.

If you feel you're morally obligated or religiously obligated to return then do so.

If not, then keeping or not keeping is your personal decision and NO ONE in this forum has a right to tell you otherwise.

Personally if this happened to me, I would give it to a deserving friend who doesn't have a budget to afford a new monitor but would like one. Pass on the good luck if you don't need it I say.

Ah, no worries. My post wasn't aimed at you directly, rather, at the idea that I (mis) understood that you were trying to represent :p

Here's where I stand:

i was charged for 2 monitors and my account shows 2 orders. the first one $660, the second $820.

i called dell to let them know that i had gotten a second monitor. according to their records, they had not shipped an extra one to me.

i called back once i had found the order # for the second monitor, and made arrangements to return it. that was at least a week ago. i was supposed to receive an email outlining how to return the monitor and get credit back. that email never came.

i replied, telling them that i hadn't received the information. dell wrote back saying that according to their records, i only had 1 order on file...the more expensive one!

i just requested a return via their website, so hopefully this time it will get processed.

bitch some more, and they'll probably ship you a 3rd...

i know the asshats from UPS dropped 6,000 worth of merchandise we ordered to the complete wrong house.... i mean honestly
