dead rising impressions

What?!

That really sucks. I have been way to busy at work as of late but was really looking forward to just running around in infiniti mode where I didn't have to mess with stupid boss battles and have some fun. I don't want to have to worry about health other then building it back up because I got hit.

Yeah, Capcom really really dropped the ball on this. It seems they have no clue what people really want from an unlimited mode. I just don't understand why in the world they had to make your health drop every 2 min.

As big of a fan as I am of this game, I have to admit I was a bit stunned when I finally unlocked Infinity mode and realized what it really was all about. It's not roam around freely, it's basically a new type of game that emphasizes hiding and avoiding zombies, and pretty much has boredom and tedious repetitive tasks engineered in.

The only reason Infinity Mode exists (and they should have called it survival mode) is so that you can earn the two achievements of "5 day survivor" and "7 day survivor". But to do that, you need to spend 14 continuous hours in a game session (or 10 continuous hours if you only want the 5 day survivor, but seriously, if you are doing 10 hours I doubt you'd flinch at another 4), there is no saving, and the longest you can leave Frank unattended in a safe spot is just under 20 minutes before his health degrades to point of death. Certain areas of the mall are now closed off, like the Grocery store, and certain items like the mini-chainsaws no longer exist. I was pretty pissed when I saw that.

My expectation was that after Overtime mode, which is a fourth day, that I'd have to spend 1 day in Infinity mode for the 5 day survivor, and two more days beyond that for 7 day survivor. I had no expectation that Infinity mode meant starting over from day 1, but with no missions and limited health items (no more infinite OJ in Columbian Roastmaster), limited weapons, and continuously degrading health. That is the complete opposite of what I was expecting. That's not a reward for completing the game, it's a slap in the face.

I seriously hope they produce an auto-update that adds a new "Free Roam" mode, because I know that is what I, and many other people, were really hoping Infinity mode would be.

Yea I was really looking forward to a free roam mode without the boss battles as they were kinda outof place in my mind but I was really pissed when I read what the overtime mode was. I haven't got to it yet as I just got a lcd monitor I can use for my xbox so I can read the missions but now just don't seem to care as much. I'll prob play through the game a few times but I really don't care about the infinity mode.

Yeah, basically the only reason for Infinity mode to even exist is so that you can earn those two acheivements, and thats only if you have 14 uninterrupted hours to devote to one gaming session, which is pretty damn rediculous in my opinion. The way it was described in the manual made Infinity mode sound like some sort of reward, but it's far from it. I doubt I'll ever earn those two survival achievements, doing so if far too much like work, rather than playing a game.

Yeah, when I got infinite mode I was like "sweet, I can fight for an hour or so, save, then come back to it.". Nope. No way in hell I will have that much time to play a game.

** wait... wife and child will be gone for two weeks in October!! I can do it then!!

Reminds me of back in like the nes/genesis days when mario and sonic had no save spots so you had to play them from start to finish. Don't want to go back to that. I play for like an hour or 2 tops. Just don't have the time to play longer.

Meh, once you've played through the game once and know all the tricks, the boss fights aren't bad at all. If you take advantage of the SMG above the warehouse entrance in Paradise Plaza and the 27x longer lasting small chainsaws the game becomes really easy. So if you want a free-form mode....just fire up a new game and have some fun! ;) I plan on beating the game once normally (that's what I'm working on now) and after that I'll start up a new game and go for Zombie Genocider.

How do you do the 27x chainsaw thing?

First, defeat Adam the clown to get the mini-chainsaw (and it respaws, so you can carry several). Then get the three books that stack on it, Entertainment and Engineering from the "other" bookstore in Paradise Plaza (near the bathrooms). And the third book is Criminal Biography from the bookstore in Wonderland Plaza where you find the Japanese Tourists.

Those are all I carry anymore for weapons. I use them far more than I would other weapons because they are so effective and last so long. I'd say that with the three books, each chainsaw is good for about 3000 - 4000 kills. I carried one and used it constantly for about 2 game days before it finally degraded.

Cool, I just needed to know where the books are. The chainsaws already own without them. Now I just can't imagine how much they would with the books!

The two books "Entertainment" and "Engineering" are in Paradise Plaza, in the Book Store that is beneath Colombian Roastmasters.

The third book, "Criminal Biography" is in the book store in Wonderland Plaza, on the second Floor, near the entrance to North Plaza. It's the same book store where you find the Japanese Tourists.

And BTW - I just unlocked the Zombie Genocider achievement, the one that requires 53,594 kills. I actually finished the game with just over 70,000 kills. That achievement unlocks the Real Mega Buster. I just gave that a quick try. In the entrance plaza right after restarting in 72 hour mode, the Real Mega Buster had enough ammo to almost (like maybe 20 shy) kill all of the Zombies there. I actually managed to keep some of the initial survivors alive, but they still couldn't be saved, they won't move and won't talk to you.

The Real Mega Buster has 300 shots, and will respawn in the security room whenever you aren't carrying it. I haven't tried it on any of the Pyschopaths yet, but it's a one shot kill on the Zombies.

Jethro, do you have any tips for getting 53,594 kills? I'm basically at the Carlito boss fight in the tunnel and I'm sitting at about 3,000...I'm mainly going for scoops/case files right now but if possible I'd like to unlock the mega buster in this play through as well. I've heard that there's about a 10 (in-game) hour lull between the last two scenes so I was hoping to go into the tunnel and do loops of running zombies over during that time. Do you think it'll be possible?

Oh yeah....my first small chainsaw started flashing...but it's been flashing for a while now. I already have the replacement in my inventory but my first one keeps going, and going, and going... :D

The easiest way to get Zombie Genocider is to do loops in the tunnels. Replacing your car regularly is key.

I'm still trying to kill Brock, unfortunately. I intellectually know how to, but cannot seem to make it work in the real world. This is odd, since I was able to breeze through every boss on the way to him (even without using the small chainsaws). Whatever - it'll happen on its own soon, I'm sure.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the title. Once you consciously start remembering to hit save points when moving about the mall, the save system becomes far less of a problem. The achievements combined with the "save your level across games" system rewards replay adequately well (although it's becoming rapidly apparent that level 50 is perhaps too low of a cap). Some of the slow-down in the last part of the game is disappointing, although I _think_ this is because of environment geometry issues rather than zombies, weirdly enough.

Yet another showcase title for the 360. :)

I followed lots of different routes trying to maximize my kills in the Maintenance Tunnels. I eventually found this one and can confirm that it is the most effecient. Even with this route you won't be able to do it with only 10 in-game hours. The fasted I've heard of anyone doing it is 24 in-game hours, but I can't confirm that. It took me 48 in-game hours, but I did a little bit of "free roam" during that time too. I basically started a new 72 hour mode specifically for the purpose of earning this one achievement.

On that map you'll notice that both the red car and the white car make a detour down toward the warehouse where you find the maintenance key. That is a critical step, because while there aren't very many zombies down there, going there causes a gazillion zombies to spawn in the main tunnel when you turn around. Aim for the guys with the Acetylene Tanks because their explosions take out 50 or more zombies at a time in dense areas. Using this route I was averaging about 1100 - 1200 Zombie kills per cycle (one cycle being a trip with each of the three vehicles).

Sweet, Jethro, thanks. I figured out on my own that it wouldn't be doable last night...I was able to get to 10k kills (I had about 4-5k before I started) before I headed for Isabela's hideout. I didn't even know about that one car on the far right of the map; I was just taking the convertible and turning left, going up and down in that little area until my car broke at which point I got in the truck and used it.

Now I just gotta decide whether I want to do overtime mode with my current inventory or start over to go for genocider for real. Hmm...if I start a new OT mode and start without my current inventory can I still go back and pick up the small chainsaw in Wonderland Plaza?

I believe so, but I can't confirm right now as I'm actaully away on vacation  So I won't have access to my 360 for a week.

Hey, no fair, the [H] Dead Rising thread mustn't be allowed to fall back to page 3! :D

Unfortunately if you start a new (overtime/infinity) game you start out with a clean slate; it doesn't consider you to have killed a certain boss so you don't get the small chainsaws. :( I just completed 5 day survivor. Poor Frank, right after it flashed my achievement I fed him to the nearest zombie. :D The laser sword rocks! Between that and the real mega buster I'm all set to try to get 7 day survivor (which isn't really worth it in terms of rewards but I'm going for it anyway!) The laser sword lasts a long time on its own too - I killed over 300 zombies with it. It has two moves, one of which extends the laser beam out and stabs zombie(s) (it can hit multiple zombies)...and the double lariat with it does the same thing so you basically hit a lot more zombies with the double lariat than you normally would.

This game is what sold me on the 360...and it was SOOOO worth it! :D

Oh man I cringed when you said that you purposely killed Frank after earning the 5 day survivor achievement. That was 10 hours of real time, right? You only had 4 more hours to go to unlock the 7 day survivor. Now you have to spend another full 14 hours to unlock that.

So executing the double lariat with the laser sword doesn't cause you to drop it? Because thats been my experiene with double lariat when holding anything else.

I earned Karate Champ and Gourmet today. Karate Champ was acutally pretty easy, just started a new OT Mode and went into the maintenance tunnels, below the butcher shop and Seon's Grocery. I would wade into the crowd doing double lariats and when I got low on health I'd go into the butcher shop for the three Milk cartons there. Wash, rinse, repeat. Took me maybe 20 minutes of real time.

The Gourmet achievement almost tripped me up because I didn't realize until the end that the blender juices are required as well.

I'm working on Clothes Horse now, and might start 5 day and 7 day survivor soon.

Double lariat does still drop the sword but it clears out such a wide area that picking it up usually isn't a problem (I've noticed it has a tendency to drop right at my feet, too.)

I fed Frank to the zombies because when I do a longer-lasting survivor run I want to have access to the laser sword...not to mention the fact that it was almost midnight and I had to go to bed because I have to work today. That would be a long time to have my 360 on and just doing nothing and I'm personally still concerned about how hot the 360 runs.

SO when is this patch coming out so my text looks normal on my SD tv? Its killnig me here!!

Just curious did they give you a mode in the end with no time limit, you get to explore everything and just kill at your own pace? I hate time limits and this game sounds like its all about time limits.
Kind of.

There are several endings to the game, depending on what objectives you complete in 72 hour mode before the time runs out. For example, if the mall blows up, you'll get ending F. If you complete all the scoops in the case file and wait on hour 72 at the helipad, you'll get ending A. Only ending A unlocks the Overtime mode, which is really an extra day that continues the storyline. If you can manage to survive Overtime mode, you will unlock Infinity mode which lets you run around the mall on a killing spree. One thing that sucks about infinity mode is that your health is slowly ticking away at one unit per 100 seconds or so.

Personally I say pujt it out there and let me decided if its too big. Its really killing the experience for me.

What they meant to say is that they've calculated that they wont gain enough customers by releasing the patch compared to what it will cost them to do it. Why they don't have an algorithm handling text display is beyond me... just slapping it on the screen seems particularly half assed.

Movieesa said:
it does seem half assed and its unreadable on SD TV really sad that they wont fix it.

Correction: it's unreadable on SDTV w/ composite cables providing the connection. I've heard it gets a lot better if you use S-Video or better. My friend didn't have a problem on his standard television with component cables, other than that the text is still pretty small.
