DC Vault

Ok so I want to officially join the Commandos!!!

I have an i7 and will have an Athlon II x4 next week.
I would like to do projects that
a) are for a good cause..........eg. NOT looking for aliens
b) count for DC-Vault
c) where we need moar push right now so we can jump up in the ranks!!

Im a noob to anything non-F@H so if I ask dumb questions.....well now you now :p

physical science and biological and medical sciences are the projects you would probably want to look into doing.. just look on the dcvault list and pick some stuff.. the majority of those are all geared toward real world information..

nitrobass24, welcome! I would suggest Malariacontrol.net, since we can still pick up some fairly easy points there, and it's definitely a good cause. Another one might be yoyo@home, which is a project that allows various non-BOINC projects (mostly hard science) to run in BOINC.

Other than that, check out this list:
http://www.dc-vault.com/showteam.php?team=98
Any project below 9,900 could use some crunching, so feel free to pick and choose.

BTW, I still haven't fixed my dual '295 server, but I did get my laptop upgraded to Win7 tonight and BOINC reinstalled.

I have been staying with F@H up to this point but have reached a point where i think I could pull one or both of my 4890s off and do something else. Do I need to go after RC5-72? i'm looking for something that will run stable and low-maintenance due to being away from home quite alot. Sig rig with Vista 64bit business.

flogge: RC5-72 would run awesome with that card. I'm probably buying a 4890 myself next week to run RC5-72. Definitely download the software for it and give it a try.

You'll want the stream client from here and make sure stream drivers are installed.

Configuring is pretty simple. Just unpack the client in a directory of your choice and fire it up and it will initiate the menu-driven configuration. Save and quit when done, the configuration file will be saved in the same directory as the client. Then, simply restart the client. From that point on it will use the saved configuration.

Welcome to the [H]ard|OCP DC-Commandos nitrobass24 and flogge !!

nitrobass24 - I agree with SazanEyes that Malariacontrol.net would be a great project that is very worthy of a serious cruncher like yourself and you could make great progress in that project with your I7.

floggie - Tobit is correct that your 4890 would make a serious impact on RC5-72 and would be the best for low low-maintenance.
Two other projects with a higher maintenance level would be Milkyway and Collatz (these two are Boinc projects).
With the 4890 on RC5-72 you may be able to run the card with the memory speed turned way down without effecting performance to save energy and reduce the heat output, something to try anyway.
I run my 4870's with the core/shader overclocked and the memory turned all the way down to 450mhz.
Here is a tutorial for creating your User Name for RC5-72. (do this once and its done for all Distributed.net projects.)

- Thanks for joining the [H]ard|OCP DC-Commandos !! Your help is greatly appreciated.

I would also love to join the DC-Commando's
Consider your self joined FrEaKy ! Glad to have you.
Any questions or anything we can do just ask and in true [H]ard|OCP form we will be glad to help.

This is so great having new members joining our growing ranks.
My wife has to keep telling me to settle down because I'm running around the house from excitement and talking a mile a minute.

Thanks everyone, you made my day!

Wow this is great! Welcome nitrobass24, flogge, and FrEaKy.

Just a couple random thoughts -

nitrobass24: If you are looking for another project that is working toward a "good cause" you might want to look at the Docking@home project. I have been working in this one a lot lately. Its helping medical research at a couple Universities which I always like to support.

flogge - RC5-72 would be a great project for a 4890 and I would agree very low maintenance. I also havent had any issues with Collatz since I started running in a couple weeks ago. One weekend they had some issues with the server but the problem has since been fixed. Since then its been rock solid.

Put Anandtech on alert. :D Keep up the good work Commandos!

I'm very interested in joining up with the Commandos! I have an i7 @4ghz sitting at home with nothing to do. Sorry if this has been asked a million times but what projects should I be looking at to help get the most out of my system for the team?

I'll be leaving my 275 to crunch for the [H]orde.

You gotta love the activity and enthusiasm here.

If people consider Distributed Particle Accelerator Design a worthy science, there are serious points to be gained there. It may take a bit to catch the next place team, but after that there's a group of them for passing, plus plenty of deadwood to pass beyond that. At over 150 points/position, there's plenty of ground to make up. (Especially when you consider TA holds first in this project, and about half the vault projects score fewer than 15 points/position.) The downside is that it's not a Boinc project, so it's yet another client to download. Setup is pretty easy, and can even be run nonet and dump style.

If you're sticking to Boinc and the Bio category, GeneticLife could be a good secondary option behind some of the others suggested before me. Work does not always seem to flow, so don't leave it as your only project and walk away. It is the Bio project with the most points left on the table (nearly 1,000) and earns about 35 points/place you take in the standings.

Regardless, I say run what interests you most. Ending up frustrated or disinterested and removing your cycles does little good. Finding a project you really enjoy, even if it's not in the most needed area, frees up another commando to target their cycles in another area - perhaps in one you just don't find exciting. Then it's that much closer to ambushing TA and above!

Pastyface - That would be great !
Our team sure could use the help of a 4ghz I7, wow that would be great.
The projects we focus on are the ones listed in the DC-Vault. The ones with the lower scores are the ones we need the most work on, but all of them need worked on.
We have a Project List thread that will direct you to the web sites of those projects and listed is our team name in that project.
Some are Boinc software type and other have there own software to run that crunches the work units.

If you have any questions or need some help setting up any of the projects just ask and we are more then happy to help.

And I had just calmed down a little. Now I'm all excited again for the new members.
DC-Vault top 10 here we come !

SIMAP work unit news:
"New Workunits: the calculation of similarities and features of approx. 400.000 new sequences, that were imported from protein databases into SIMAP until the end of October, and approx. 5 million sequences from environmental genomes will start in the morning (UTC) of October 31. We will also test a 64bit simap application for Windows. This new app will be automatically installed on Windows64 BOINC clients."

Got GPU grid back up and running just to give myself some more BOINC points. Are their any other DCVault projects that run on Nvidia cards? I have a 9800gtx to donate to it instead of GPUgrid, which we already have tied up pretty well.

Per Razor - Here is a post with the current GPU projects. :)

I think we have a decent standing in all of these projects. Pick one that you want to contribute to and let us know how it goes. :)

Gotta agree here, I've been looking at that one for a while and wondering if we could make any kind of progress there - I haven't looked closely, as the only non-BOINC I run now is dnet & F@H, but we're gonna need the 4K+ from that if we hope to keep moving up!

Thanks for the heads up, will pull my quad off Enigma for this run when I get home tonight... Haven't gotten to do SIMAP in almost 6 months!

If anyone decides to help with DPAD (Muon1) here is the proper format for putting your points with our team.

In whatever directory you unrar the files for Muon1 in you need to place a .txt file containing you team and user name - the file name is :

user.txt

Here is an example of what to save in that file (substitute my user name with yours) :

[H]Razor_FX_II

I think we could make some nice gains in Muon1. I've been meaning to run it now that I've given up on W@H but haven't gotten around to it.

We can also make some decent progress in GIMPS, especially if you run it with an i7. Be warned that the LL units take over a month to complete, but then you drop four results all at once and get a big jump in points. If you just want to run it for a short time, configure it for "Trial Factoring" only. I can give detailed instructions if asked. TF unlike LL doesn't take advantage of hyperthreading, though.

For projects like SIMAP and Lattice that only have work once a month or so, I just leave them enabled on all my BOINC clients so that I get the work automatically. There's been Lattice work over the last few days. Only run Lattice if you have a lot of free RAM (1GB per core?).

On the other hand - It looks like we could get another team in this project in a week or less with just a little more muscle. :)

Well the i7 has been up and running solid for the better part of this week. Man this thing is fast. I like it a lot. Makes me want a second one. :D

So Ive got my i7 running 50% Docking@home and 50% Malaria Control.net

Is that good or is there some other project that would benefit us more for the DC-Vault?

Those projects are fine nitrobass24.
That will help the team make substantial gains in those projects.
It's great having you part of the team.

Everyone keeps talking about there shiny new I7's and feel like I must get me one ..erm.. I mean a couple.:D
I'll have to do some research and find a good duel processor board that I can put a couple into and liquid cool them in a 4U rack.
It's time I reinvest..tax season is almost here.:)

[H]appy [H]alloween, [H] Commandos!

(If I did this right, check your Eon ranking and Vault status.)

Oh my !!
I sure hope thats a Treat not a Trick.:D
That will jump us up about a thousand DC-Vault points !!
Thanks Dr P - greatly appreciated and [H]appy [H]alloween.

Well when you decide to do that theres no point in WC on the dual boards because you cant OC and then affordable procs just dont get hot enough to need extra cooling that a good HSF couldnt provide.

Thats great nitro. That i7 should do well in those projects. The great thing about BOINC is that if you find another project you want to spend some time on switching to a new project and switching between several projects is very easy. :) Thanks a lot for the help!

Wow. Thanks Dr. P!!

Each project has its own webpage which you can get stats on. For instance Docking has our team stats here. The stats on the team page are updated pretty regularly. If you click on the My Account link on the Docking site and log it it will take you to a summary page of you account. The total points on this page is almost real time in my experiences.

The free-dc site is awesome for stats but it doesn't get updated quite as often. IIRC for the Docking project its updated like 4 times a day. Check back in about a half an hour to free-dc and there will probably be an update in Docking.

TYAN (S7025)

good luck cramming it all in 4u with the rads though, also need special psu.

I have all the panels of my custom 4u case cut out and am laying out for the machining, it gets tight.

How do i check stats? I cant seem to find myself on free-dc?

Is this you?
http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=userbycpid&cpid=fc93398a1772a6e309d6e4375069dc23

You can change your account name on the individual BOINC project web sites if you want to go by nitrobass24. Also, if you create an account on the Free-DC forums, that login transfers over to the stats site so that you can create a custom stats page. For example, here's my page that includes non-BOINC projects. I use it to track everything I do. Here's the [H]ard|OCP team page.

Hey thats me.....what are they doing with my real name?

When you sign up for BOINC, you give them your real name and email. When you add a project to BOINC, you sign in with your real email. Then a web site will pop up, where you can enter additional info for the project and choose a team. If you didn't notice, your project account name defaults to your first name that you provided to BOINC. I'm pretty sure you can go to the Docking and Malaria project sites and change your name without losing any points, since your CPID will not change.

yup.. just go to your account in the boinc project.. under the edit account options select other account info and you can change the name right there..

I'm glad I could help. Those points needed a good home anyway. ;) I've started a few clients sharing time on a quad, hopefully I can eventually help pull within striking distance of a few more teams.

I've been thinking about all these non-boinc projects which need cycles. Each one requires a new client download and then a few more hoops to jump through to create a user and join to the correct team. Each project and client has a slightly different process. Many rely on a .cfg or .ini file for the configuration information. Would it be possible to create a Commando account on some of these projects and then host the config file? That way, the entire process for helping in a needed but obscure area would be to download the latest client and then grab the Commando config. Immediately their cycles would count towards the effort, and it might even draw in some people who want a short hiatus from folding but don't want to learn another client install.

Just a random thought. Crunch on!

Thats an interesting idea. I suppose if something like this existed I would probably contribute a little time here and there on projects im not currently part of and didnt plan on spending a significant amount of time on. Of course it might get kind of tricky if the client required a password to start crunching (like BOINC projects do).

Looks like we are less than 700 points behind Anandtech. Keep up the great work fellas!

Well apparently the people in that forum dont like the idea. :D

I thought most of the changes in that article sounded ok, (maybe I misunderstood the effects of the changes ).

I guess as long as there are WU's to crunch, those WU's are helping science and research, and the point system is the same for everyone, then its kind of a moot point IMO.

Still just chugging along in the background. I my goals are to get all of my projects over 100k. I just finished enigma my next goal is spinhenge.

Almost done with my first quarter of college.

It looks like NQueens is gone from DC Vault. I don't think it was dropped, but the project has apparently been unavailable for a while. Here's a thread about it.

Not to mention about 1.5K in gains on Anandtech! Oh well, guess we gotta keep crunching [H]arder!
