DC Vault

Hmmm . . thanks for the averages. I think I might try to get my 3870 up and running on Collatz tomorrow and see if its better than my 8800GS could do. It seems strange to me however that my 4850 is averaging about 11:30 per WU at last check. The strange thing is my GPU is only clocked at 625 Mhz.

It may be that my machines that have my ATI cards in them have a lot of overhead.
The two machines that have the ATI's in them are running SoB on one and OGR-27 on the other plus each machine is also crawling about 8 million URLs a day for Majestic-12.

But with completion times like that you should be very happy with that performance.

Yeah I've been pretty happy with it. Seems to be running very smoothly. Seems like Collatz is a project that we could maybe make a run for the Top 10. Once I get my other ATI card up and running this weekend, I'll see how it does. I may even consider putting a 5850 in my new i7 rig in another month or so.

I just joined our Majestic-12 team. Seems like a good project for my old laptop. I do need to monitor bandwidth closely though. Comcast has a very strict 250GB/mo. limit and are real hard asses if you offend more than once in a 6 mos. period.

Hi Tobit......not on your team but just a heads up.......if you are not careful you could chew thru that 250gb in a week.

I don't run it that much but when I do it gets through circa 30gb per day.....just awaiting a letter from my ISP

Happy crawling :)

Guys, I'd like to hear your thoughts on Wieferich@home. I've been dedicating three PCs (i7 3.5GHz, Phenom II 3.0GHz, E6600 3.2GHz) to it for a while now, but I can only hold off the Cows for a couple weeks. They seem re-energized. Right now every change in position is worth 200 points in DC Vault.

Here's the thing. This project requires a huge amount of resources for not much progress. Even with everything I'm throwing at it, in six months we'll be in the same spot (we'll overtake two teams but be overtaken by two teams). If we all get together and make a big continual push, realistically at most we can pick up 400 DC Vault points, because everyone else above us is really out of reach. On the other hand, if I stop completely, we'll lose 400 points when we're overtaken. But, after the two threats pass us, nobody else is on the radar.

I'm starting to think that the project just isn't worth it going forward. We'll maintain at least 8K for W@H in the Vault for a long time, but the huge CPU resources would be better devoted to other projects (like GIMPS, BOINC, sieving, etc.). There are probably some projects where picking up the 400 points we'll lose shouldn't be too hard. I just don't want to quit without bringing it up here first.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. In the 2.5 hours this has been running, I've already gone through 500MB. Oops. :D

All of them. :D The goal is World Domination.
QFT. The goal we had going was to get all BOINC projects over 9K for a baseline, but we're getting to the point that we're barely doing more than treading water on a SLOW climb to 10th place. At this point, pick some favorite projects, and the lower the Vault point total the better for the push for 10th, then watch for random suggestions for places we can make big pushes on specific projects (once we get around to paying more attention). The push to 9th & 8th place is going to be where things get real hard! Amazingly, the gap from 8th to 3rd is actually smaller than from 10 to 9 or from 9 to 8...

SazanEyes, I have watched your very commendable dedication to W@H and you have done an amazing job their but I have also thought the same thing that it may pay off more to let those two teams buy and make up those points in other projects that can be moved more with those resources.
I'm totally on board with letting those two teams buy and I know you can make larger advances in other projects.
I keep running into the very same thing as you in other projects where you almost have to dedicate entire CPU's just to hold the spot and I have concluded that in the long term that it's just not possible to do with so many projects at hand, so I try to pick on the ones that I can move the most and don't fight every team that pushes at us but get them in other places.

As a team I think we are doing great, not to say we can't always use more help but with that said I am extremely proud of this teams dedication.
I'm just lucky to be on the best team there is!

The gap between teams in the top 10 is so small because those teams are pretty much maxxed out pointswise using the vault scale.

The only times things really change up there is when projects get dropped or added.
Funny seeing the scramble for points in "about to be vaulted" projects :D

Prepare for some serious tactical crunching and project-hopping if you intend further climbs at the vault.

Have fun :)

Sazan - I would agree with you on W@home. That is a lot of CPU power being devoted to for 400 points. If we want to make a run at that project sometime we could always get a joint effort from all of the commandos. You have done an awesome job holding down that project but I'd say that you could probably do some serious damage with all those cores in some other BOINC projects.

For instance I noticed you have been doing some Docking units. With a little help from those cores that you are contemplating taking off of W@home we could probably gain 100 points in Docking alone in about 10 days. Im sure there are several other BOINC projects like that as well. 9K in all BOINC projects was a good goal when it was set but now there are several projects that with a couple weeks of solid crunching we could be pushing 9.5K+. :)

SazanEyes post and Kendraks latest contest has me doing some thinking so here is some blabber from me.

I'm really torn as to how I want to distribute my time and "D" as I start to rebuild my farm. There are many projects I'd like to throw more "D" at than I can financially afford so that also adds to my frustration. Additionally, when I made the decision last week to return to distributive computing, I wasn't actually going to spend much of an effort with F@H and focus most of my efforts with the Vault. However, I came back and found EVGA kicking our ass so I was thinking, therefore, of going with F@H full-time. Now I am feeling guilty for not having a positive attitude because I feel it's very likely that EVGA is going to mow us over no matter what we do. Therefore, I am now thinking of focusing most of my efforts on the Vault once again. I'm insane, I know. I will follow up more with the "why I do this" in Kendrak's thread.

Not sure what I am going to do just yet but I know I will be buying more "D" to start rebuilding my farm.

Sell off some, and donate others? That's what I'm doing just to get started in this business (of fun, of course :))

Let me just give you one piece of advice. Do what YOU want to do. We'd be more than happy to have you back crunching with the commandos but if you want to put all your boxen on F@H you wont get any complaining out of this group. ;) Either way thanks for DC'ing for the Horde.

P.S. - Im putting all my CPUs on Docking this weekend. I want to finish what I started over there (getting to the Top 40). After this weekend I will probably pull some CPUs off Docking to a few other projects that we need some help in and maybe work on a few WCG badges. I almost have my second Ruby badge. :)

I'm winding down W@H. I'm going to put the i7 on BOINC, but I think I'll help with the Docking push with the rest of the machines.

There, FIFY! :D

I've just told myself that even if eVGA mows us, so what? The [H]orde is still the best non-commercially sponsored F@H team out there! Besides, I want to see what happens next February when they hit that 1 year anniversary and points reset - I have a feeling that if they discontinue the free money for folding, they'll come back down to earth quickly... Yeah, yeah, I know, whatever I gotta tell myself, right?

This is the best advice of all!

I'm actually going out of town for the next week, so I'm moving everything over to Docking for the push, and I'll see where all of you are heading next Sunday!

well i got the 3870 up and running this afternoon. Looks like its been running all afternoon evening and its averaging about 29 minutes per WU on Collatz. Not quite as good as I had hoped but still decent. Looks like Collatz is having some issues this weekend though. Doesnt look like the scoring is being updated and WUs are trickling out kind of slow. They must be having some server issues.

My CPU arrived today. I'm starting in full earnest now. Thank you everybody who helped me build this!
Thank you Vaulter98c; thank you engiNURD!

Looks like Virtual Prarie has work again.

This projects addition to the Vault could be imminent then, I would assume?

Ordered the final parts i need for my long thought about i7 rig. A i7 860 will be coming online next weekend for the Horde! :)

Collatz News:

"The project is back online after the outage this weekend. If you are using an ATI GPU and have not converted to v2.06 yet, you may want to do so now. Any WU that crashes the validator will be deleted. No credit awarded. After having manually fixed several hundred in the last 24 hours, I am tired of fixing. If you are using the standard ATI apps, the ATI 2.06 app has probably already downloaded and your have nothing to do. If you are running an app_info.xml and have not yet upgraded, you may want to do so as soon as possible. If the 2.05 results continue to crash the validator, I will change the validator to reject any 2.05 results so that the project does not crash again next weekend."

Welcome to salterre in the GPUGRID project. Looks like he is putting up some pretty significant points. Thanks for helping out! If you are around the boards stop in and day HI! :)

Welcome to our newest member of the [H]ard DC Commandos - xdivenx (DivineX).

I just noticed that we hit 25 million in GPUGRID yesterday.
Wow thats a heck of a lot of point commandos !
We have had incredible help from many contributers and I would like to thank them all.
Nice crunching team, keep up the great work.

On this new boxen I just built, I am currently running two GPUs for F@H. However, one of the spare CPU cycles has been now assigned to RC5-72. There are also some new numbers posted on yesterdays stats from when I was doing some testing with the RC5-72 Cuda client. The dnet projects have always been some of my favorites so I will be devoting as much to them in the future as I can muster up.

Thanks Tobit,
Looks like the RC5-72 marks that 8800GT put in were right in line with my 9600GT.

You may want to put the CPU cycles on OGR-27 where we need points the most.
I'm using the Windows x64 beta client and it's runs nice and smooth.

Great to have you back !

Okie dokie, once this current batch of RC5-72 packets finishes, I will reconfigure it for OGR-27. I am using the same client as you for the CPU. Once I get another boxen built, I will be putting this 8800GT into full-time operation on RC5072.

Razor: What could I run on a 1.7GHz Pentium M based laptop with 512MB RAM? I was going to run Majestic-12 but it simply uses too much bandwidth here. I realize I can throttle it within the application but it just seems like it wouldn't be very efficient to do only a few hundred meg/day. Maybe I'm wrong though.

My ISP is very strict on exceeding bandwidth and if you get busted more than once and labeled as a habitual offender, they will suspend accounts for 6 mos. to a year so I need to be careful.

EON, OGR-27(slow but has no deadline on WU's), seventeen or bust(slow but no deadlines on WU's), also freehal since its 100% memory run and runs the same speed on ddr-2100 as it does on ddr2-6400..

i run eon on my 1.7ghz pentium M.. does around 800-1000 WU's a day..

Does EON actually have work these days? Was it ever converted to BOINC? I always had issues in the past getting the client to actually work and download work.
