DC Vault

WTF is WTF for?:confused:

DC Vault has seemlingly evolved into a tech help section.

But it is still about the 2 main DC projects:
F@H and (the other one, with the BIONIC engine).

Who is this guy? Get your facts straight man.

DC Vault is basically a world ranking of Distributed Computing Teams. The ranking is based on how your team is doing in lot of different projects (50 of more IIRC). The main website is here, and it has a short explanation on the front page.

Right now the Horde is ranked 11th. Take a look here for how we are currently doing in all the different projects. Notice that we are ranked 1st in F@H and how that correlates to DC Vault points. :)

If you have any questions or need any help feel free to ask! :)

/facepalm oops.

Right but my understanding is that BOINC is a framework not a project.
So how would i get setup with BOINC so i am working for the [H]?

Do we have a guide for this?

Yeah BOINC is a framework that lots of different projects (including WCG) use. Basically you will want to go here and download and install BOINC. Once BOINC is installed then you want to go to the Advanced View and then attach to a project. Once you do it once its really easy to add more projects, or switch between projects.

Im at work now but if someone doesnt beat me to it, I'll find the guide and link it to you later. Or give you better instructions. :)

Here is a pretty good install guide. The only thing i do different is click Advanced during the install and uncheck the "Use BOINC screensaver" checkbox.

This page has a good section on how to attach to a project. You can attach to several different projects at a time if you wish to run WUs from several projects.

1. - Download the latest Boinc for your OS/machine type.
2. - Create account with your E-mail and password from one of the many projects that team [H]ard|OCP runs.
- (Project names can be found at the project list page. Google search should give you the project's web site. If you can't find the project's website just ask and we can direct you to it.)
3. - Join our team. In your account settings page (click on "Your Account" from the project main page) there will be a button/link that says "Find team to join".
- Enter in the [H]ard|OCP or the version of our team name that is listed in the project list page next to the project name you joined.
4. - Install Boinc.
5. - Run Boinc and attach to the project you have created an account in by selecting your project from the project list in Boinc and give the E-mail and password used when creating that account.
- If the project you joined is not listed in the list then look on the main web page of the project you joined for a web address to enter in the "Project address" field at the bottom of the attach to project list page.
- If you can't find it just ask and we will be happy to tell you what it is.
6. - Once attached to the project you can adjust how much CPU usage and other variables under preferences. Boinc will download the required executable and work units and begin running them.

Thats about it. Any questions please ask and we will do our best to help you out.
There are many different stat pages to view but I think most of us use Free-DC.

The DC-Vault is as metallicafan said a way to rank teams by combining almost all Distributed Computing projects and giving a rank to teams for there overall position in all projects.

This actually goes to post 4, the closed/abandoned/etc list. Follow This Link to get to the thread, and the active projects.

And I don't actually have links in the list yet. I've actually been considering bringing nomad8u's spreadsheet back up to date with links and what all hardware each project supports (which I really want to have a current list of).

Thanks alan2308 for correcting me on my oversight.
I fixed the links to point to post #1.

I'll PM you some DC projects site URL lists that I have come across.

I've got what I believe every project that I have stats for bookmarked, so I'm a click or two away from there to the project's home page and our team page. Long story short, don't spend too much time collecting URLs.

Second GPU in same computer as GPUGRID is running on a #1 GPU already?
The second GPU should be running a work unit as well if it downloaded 2 work units, if not set your days of work to get in preferences to like 2-5 , save settings and then click the Update button on the Projects tab in Boinc. If more than one GPUGRID work unit is already download but not running on you second card then it may be that it does not meet the minimal video card requirements to run GPUGRID - or it is a different card than the first one.
If the second card meets minimal requirements and is different from the first card then you need to create a .txt file and paste into it -

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

then save it and rename it to cc_config.xml then copy it into you C:\ProgramData\BOINC directory and restart Boinc and all GPUGRID capable nVidia GPU's should run work units.

Good update on the Vault. Moved up a spot in Biological and Medical Science. :)

Nitrobass - Did you get your second GPU running under BOINC?

No at first I thought I had a bad GPU cause I couldnt get any CUDA apps to run on it.
But I got it figured out, and I have F@H running ATM.

I added that code that Razor suggested but to no avail.

Any ideas?

Also I want to put my CPU's on WCG but when I try to add the proj it says it cant connect.

Im gonna put most my gear on F@H so I can makeup what I have lost in the last 5 months being inactive, but I have a serious influx of equipment comin. :)

Attaching to WCG in Boinc is a little different then all the rest of the Boinc projects, - instead of giving your e-mail address and password it wants your User Name that you created on the WCG web site and password.

It says this in the messages tab? Can you copy us the exact error? Good to hear you have some hardware coming! :D

Edit: Damn I see Razor is one step ahead of me as normal. :)

I have a GTX 275 and a Tesla C1060

I have Server2008 R2 and the Nvidia CUDA 190.38 drivers installed.

I see that it is your Tesla doing work right now and that Boinc is not seeing your other card. http://www.gpugrid.net/hosts_user.php?userid=44225
Did you put the cc_config.xml file you created in the C:\Program Files\BOINC directory or the C:\ProgramData\BOINC directory?
Be sure it is in the ProgramData\Boinc directory where the other .xml files and projects and slots folders are. (this may be located somewhere else in Server2008 - do a search for projects and put the cc_config.xml in the Boinc folder that the projects folder is in and and restart Boinc.

Yea I put it in program files

Damn, I need to learn to pay attention.

Ill fix it when I get home
Thanks Razor:)

What is a project with some small fast running work units that I can run on my lappy. It is having a pretty hard time doing this cosmology units in timely order (30+ hours per unit) and i'm missing deadlines because of it.

the current Docking units im running are taking about 4 hours each to complete on a Athlon X2 @ 2.2GHz.

MalariaControl and Virtual Prairie are also pretty small/quick. I've been running Malaria on my laptop and it seems to run cool.

Okay, after a lot of trial and error, I'm temporarily back to the Cat 8.12 drivers, but I think the problem I've been having is with the VPU Recover feature in the Catalyst Control Center - it seems to be what is causing the various GPU hangs I've been having. I decided to just nuke it, and discovered that Cat 8.12 + Milkyway 0.20 + BOINC 6.10.13 = 1m17s WUs, so I'm just gonna let it run overnight and see if I can wake up to a working computer for the first time in three days... Then, if that works, I'll try the 9.X Cat drivers (I have 9.1 from before the rename workaround & the latest 9.9 to play with) without CCC to see if that makes any difference - but if all else fails, I'll just stick with the 8.12s + MW stable!

Looks like you have Milkyway running strong now Jathanis. Nice work.:)
I'm going to spend a few days and make a push on GeneticLife and see if I can run our position up a notch or two.

Im impressed with Collatz. This has been running very well on my ATI card. No crashes or blue screens. Yea.

Razor what have you been running your RAM at on your cards running Collatz? I upped mine from like 750 to the default 9xxMhz. I didnt want to go any higher until I knew if the card was stable, but now that I know it is, I was just wondering if it was worth going any higher.:)

4870's I run at 800mhz core with 450mhz memory - temp 52c - average completion time 12:52
4850's I run at 700mhz core with 990mhz memory - temp 52c - average completion time 12:54

You just didn't like me making a run at #1 on that project, right? :D Seriously, I was having trouble hauling us up over 9K by myself on that one, and your 5K ppd should gain us 4 spots in a week or so, pushing us over. As for MW, I finally convinced my wife to log back over to my account on the computer with my ATI card when she's done using it, and when it runs, it runs great! We'll be out of town all week next week, so I'm looking forward to putting up a good 500K more by the end of next week - then once I get back I'll look at Collatz again. I'd love to get a second BOINC project up over 1M pernts!

If anyone has a few extra cores available (ha, ha) you may want to put some points into Virtual Prairie and NFS.
Those will probably be the next two to be added to the vault.

Good stuff Razor and Jathanis. I'll be back soon but not sure in what capacity. There are several vault projects I'd like to participate in. However, I don't like EVGA ramping up on us in FAH so I might devote cores to just FAH for now. Dunno.

That would be great to have you back Tobit when you get the chance.
Every little bit helps and we/I have missed you around here.:)

From what i can tell it looks like both of these are CPU only projects, correct? I should have my i7 box done in about 10 days or so. Once I can get that up I'll throw it on one of these. :)

Thats correct metallicafan.
Virtual Prairie is out of work right now but should have a new batch soon and NFS has lots of work.
Both project's work units run in about 1/2 an hour each and run very stable with out too much heat generation.

is GPU Grid the only proj that uses GPUs?

Also what projects are we try to get to the top?

The distributed.net projects, OGR-27 and RC5-72, have CUDA clients. I've always liked these two projects, probably my favorites actually.

is GPU Grid the only proj that uses GPUs?
GPUGRID, distributed.net (ORG-27 and RC5-72), Collatz, milkyway, and I think Seti have GPU clients.

Also what projects are we try to get to the top?
All of them. :D The goal is World Domination.
However, as far as BOINC projects go I think, yoyo, cosmology, and POEM are some of our lowest ranked projects. Or the new ones Razor just mentioned. Otherwise GIMPS is one were we have a pretty low score, but the WUs for that project are pretty long IIRC.

Anyone running any Nvidia cards on Collatz? I was thinking that I might swap my 8800GS from GPUGRID for a little while. Or I have an old ATI HD 3870 that I could swap in that machine. Anyone have estimates on how Nvidia cards are doing in this project?

Nvidia works well with Collatz, except for dual GPU cards. If they ever fix GTX295 support I'll start running it again.
Posted via [H] Mobile Device

Collatz on Nvidia and ATI cards run very stable.
Here are some completion times from my Nvidia and ATI cards.
Keep in mind that these cards are overclocked pretty high.

ATI -
4870 = 12:37 minutes
4850 = 12:47 minutes

Nvidia -
GTX260 = 22:11 minutes
GTS250 = 25:35 minutes
8800GTS G92 = 27:03 minutes
9600GT G94 = 49:29 minutes
