Flying at an incredible Mach 8, DARPA successfully tested its new hypersonic weapon which is capable of hitting a target anywhere in the world with one hour. An earlier test flight this summer was not as successful and crashed into the Pacific Ocean. The new weapon when fully developed will be part of the Army’s Prompt Global Strike effort.

We don’t know much about the fluid dynamics involved when something shoots through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds. And there really aren’t any wind tunnels capable of replicating those often-strange interactions

Insane weapon. You're just sitting there thinking it's 5 PM, then BOOM! It's 6 PM. You just missed happy hour. Thanks a lot, DARPA.

One whole hour? I thought Anonymous could reach and ruin any target in seconds.

Ahhhh....our tax dollars hard at work. I wonder, for what this shit is going to cost, how many people could be granted the gift of a better education, or assisted with clean water, or food? For the cost of this I wonder how many of our decaying bridges could be fixed, or how many of our Edison era electrical grid components could be changed out for something a little more modern?

tl;dr: fuck these assholes.

You could get the 47% that don't pay any income taxes to start paying them and then you'd have your bridges and grid and whatever else. But then they'd have to give up their entitlements. Oh noes.

A failed foreign policy is always more impressive at mach 8.

Think of it like NASA, the technology they develop will trickle down into things people will use in the future.

Ill wait for the mainstream version to bring down the costs. Until then I will consider a mach 8 kill anyone weapon as a fad. Unless I could purchase the rights and develop it with some kind of foursquare front end...

I come here to read the computer forum, not get involved in all that complicated politics spam your cluttering it with.

the political whiners are normally the ones that don't get involved with crap anyway. Their sole purpose in the universe is to be a whiner. wahhhhh wahhhhhhh

The internet started as a DARPA project. Countless other inventions stemmed from DARPA research.

If this can eliminate a confirmed North Korean nuclear threat in one hour, I'm all for it.

How long does it take a slow missile to get from Afghanistan or Iraq to Iran anyway? Who else we gunna aim it at?

Iran, Pakistan, North Korea.... etc, etc, etc. This is just another item to add to the MAD principal even though the USSR doesn't exist anymore. Governments are less likely to press that large red button that fires missiles on our assets when they know we can reach them in under an hour or their money back!

Now to incorporated this kind of tech into transportation systems. I want to be able to travel anywhere in the world within 1 hour. Of course the scope-n-grope lines and holding patterns would void any real world speed gains.

I'm just going to assume you meant, "47% that don't pay any federal income taxes", because otherwise that fragment is false. The problems with the rest of the sentence can be dealt with after you realize almost everyone pays some form of income tax.

While I agree the military should be very heavily cut back, I don't think DARPA should be part of those cuts (or at least, if it were to be cut, turn it back into ARPA outside the defense spending), they actually do useful and innovative stuff.

QFT.

More than one tenth of our country is unemployed, estimated to be closer to 16% if you include all those who have expired their unemployment terms to languish unemployed, and the military reservists which are delployed.

What a waste of money for a country experiencing depression era unemployment stats.

Iran, Pakistan, North Korea.... etc, etc, etc.
Already said Iran from Afghanistan, and Pakistan is next door. Submarines are already in SE Asian waters that can fire missiles while submerged.

This is simply an answer to a question no one asked, but its OK, I'm sure it was only a few billion to develop and purchase.

The US simply spends far too much on weapons and weapons research, and this money would be far better invested in private sector growth industries.

You've never been kicked when you were down have you? I think this is one thing that can protect you even if you are unemployed and sucking up my tax dollars.

The real problem is student loans, we should stop letting irresponsible kids wreak the economy...

I don't actually have a problem with an agency doing advanced research, shit if anything we need more of that...BUT...lets shitcan the weapons portion and focus on things that would actually be useful to humanity, not just the small group of uber-rich industrialist cocksuckers powered by their DC puppets and the military to protect their "interests (read: profits, ever expanding power) disguised as "national security" and or "the war on terror".

Care to provide sources for this hot load of diarrhea?

You see, by borrowing money and then paying back more than we borrowed we are..um.. damaging the country.. by.. um stealing money from working Americans...or something.

Without it, you would be an endentured slave participating in the construction of a palace for you masters.

We have the best weapons because they are developed in the private sector for profit under a competitive environment. The same goes for medicine. Freedom is our greatest resource since our educational system is fucked by a bunch of left wing ideologues and union thugs. We are being destroyed from within by socialism. Once freedom is lost, the brightest people of the world will no longer flock here and our technological edge will be lost and so will we.

Bend over and pucker up . The rest of thee world has been patiently waiting for "Rome to fall". We have one last chance of it is already not to late.

And your individual worth is determined by the actions of tothers that share the country you live in?

So this is what the rich are busy wasting your country's tax payer money on, and then claiming that they can't improve things like build new bridges or provide hospital care for you? And why is this needed exactly? The US army isn't exactly the underdog against anyone, is it? But you'll just allow it to continue ... and continue it will ... until there is nothing in your country *except* weapons that roll off the production lines and the american public will have long outlived their usefulness to the latest in a long line of megalamaniacs.

Don't be silly, we can't make weapons in America, we have China for that.

What a great way to start a nuclear war. How are our potential enemies to know the difference between a mach 8 conventional weapon and a re-entering nuclear warhead?

We don't have any ICBMs capable of Mach 8, that would be their first clue. The second clue would be the lack of a nuclear explosion, because I doubt they would have a lot of time to think before it touches down.

I have no problem with weapons developed in the private sector.

I have a problem with the government spending so much of my tax money on weapons, totaling "defense" spending of about half of the total of every other country in the world combined. Even big ol' China only comes out to around 7% of world military spending, and that's with ~300 million vs ~1400 million people.

The USSR pumped out more and more weapons regardless of the cost to their economy, and ultimately it led to their collapse. Are we going to wait for the same to happen to us?

The USSR also tried to redistribute wealth. See how that worked out?

I'd rather our military be the most advanced in the world.

Apparently these are very beefy cruise missiles. They do not have the trajectory of a ICBM.
