How do you guys deal with power outages and the knowledge you lost PPD???

Ugh, power went out at about 10:30ish and I just went to sleep knowing I would lose some ppd overnight.

I guess I should have just stayed up in the dark, I guess the power went on about an hour and a half later.

.....i realize that the points are arbitrary numbers, and that the work is still going to get done...

turn a radio or something with an analog volume dial way up so it wakes you as soon as the power is restored so you can go fire up your boxen post haste

For a half hour that is a massive UPS block. That or a backup generator...... I've been thinking about getting one.

Seriously.... the radio is a idea. Or just take the hit for part of the day. You will be fine. Once the shaking stops.

I didn't have a power outage, but my internet was just down for about a day. The guy from the cable company comes to the door and says the cable wire is too close to the power line, and he has to change it. Several hours later, I check, he's long gone, and he never actually put up a new cable. Then they show up two hours late this morning, and finally after an hour or so of work I was back up and running.

I think these are basically all your alternatives. I'm low on funds and as a result I just take a hit for part of the day. This isn't a problem unless I happen to have a 2684 on folding1 as it runs right up against the 4 day deadline at 3.7 days to finish.

When I have some funds again, I like the idea of a backup generator combined with a bunch of UPS'. I noticed that Costco has been selling backup generators for a good price lately.

Well all my machines are on UPS's and they have the capacity to run the machine for 50 minutes or so. I have a 5000w generator in the garage that I can power up and feed the house. Course thats only if I am home when she goes out. But still...

5k generator only cost me $400 or so but I do have to manually start her up. The backup generators would cost me much more but they would be automatic. More capacity too but I don't need much more than 5k.

Of course losing internet access is a problem I can't do too much about. I did build a WIFI directional antenna once and looked for an open connection... just for grins... but didn't find any.

You could talk to a neighbor and see if you could get a wifi connection with his feed if needed... just an idea...

wow only $400 for the generator? How did you pull that off?

I could really use a generator for my house. My two big sump pumps are the only think keeping the water table out of my basement. I have redundant pumps on battery backups, but i'm not sure if the redundant pumps have the capacity to keep up.

I never thought of a generator. Live in an apartment so I dont have the room to store it. I would gt one if I had the room to store it though since if the power goes out in the Summer during a hot night it makes for crappy sleeping.

Might look into some UPS's would be nice to have at least so I can properly shut down my machines. UPSs would work for tripper breakers as well right? So if I were to overdraw a breaker and it shut off the UPSs should take over, that would actually help me in the summer time too since I ofter trip the breakers when the AC is on. Maybe ill even get a UPS for the AC in our room.

I'm laughing as I try to imagine what my wife would say if, I was firing up a generator in the middle of a cold, dark night. Not for heat, or light, or cooking, but to keep "those damn computers" running.

If she has put up with your "hobby" for this long, she would probably understand, LOL!

HAH... well some years back, before I bought my first generator, we had an ice storm that took out the power lines in the middle of the night. My girlfriend stayed over that night and we woke up to a cold house. I told her to just stay in bed I will get the furnace going. Went down to the basement with my 2 LARGE ups's. Unwired the furnace from the wall and plugged it into the first ups and fired it up. Ran about an hour, then hooked up the other UPS and ran another hour. House went back to 75 degrees.

She has loved my geeky computer stuff ever since. lol

Well after shopping around I couldn't get much below $600. So went to Craigslist and found a brand new one an ex-wife was selling. Said she was selling it before her ex came and got it. I paid a little over 400 for that one and she IS brand new.

I am going to sell it for around $450 tho so if your in the Detroit area...

Caution! W A R N I N G

If you do hook up a generator to your house make sure you disconnect from the main power lines! You could kill a worker who is working on the lines by feeding back to the pole. MAKE SURE you know what you are doing.

Oh and local authorities will not be happy with you unless you install a special switch that automatically turns off the pole anytime the generator is turned on. Kind of a fail safe system.

I don't tell them and have my generator in the garage with a feed line back to the house for a 30amp service. Then just turn off the main breaker so I can't feed to the pole.

Hopefully these guys are just planning on unplugging the UPS from the wall and plugging it in to the heavy drop cord going to the generator.

Also if the power goes out you don't need heat just go huddle with the folding farm!

Even with a standby generator you need 30seconds of power from some where. 30 seconds is the time needed for the automatic power transfer switch to autostart the generator and get it running at the right RPM.
