Cyborg R.A.T. Mouse

This mouse was to replace my Deathadder, which works perfect. Here's my impressions so far after spending more time with it:

*The ability to adjust just about every aspect is nice, but no matter how I adjusted it, I couldn't get a good feel for it. It just feels a bit awkward, and clunky. It's built well, but the cumbersome feeling just isn't going to work.

*I don't have large hands, but they're not tiny either, and the mouse just felt too big. The 1&2 buttons have no grooves like the Deathadder does, and that also felt awkward since the buttons are flat. After an hour or so, I found my wrist was very sore, enough that I quit playing. My palm on the Deathader rides the contour perfectly, so my palm is always on the mouse (ergonomics) but with the RAT, the back of my palm was on the mouse pad. I tried different approaches to holding the mouse and still it made my wrist sore.

* The laser, what you all have been waiting for. It bugs the living hell out of me. When surfing the web, I click on anything, the cursor moves in one direction or another. It does not stay stationary. Clicking on my favorites would result in it engaging the drag function off as if I were trying to create a shortcut. I did notice the front of the mouse would easily
pick up, causing the the cursor to move when I did not want it to. That caused me to change my grip once again.

Some may find this a great mouse, I however, don't.
Needless to say I already have it boxed up and ready to send back to Amazon.

Moral of the story, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Hmm, makes me think of two things then.

1. It probably feels like a G9. Designed for that gaming grip vs. long browsing periods.

2. From what I've been reading it has the laser of the current gen of Razer mice. Sounds like it suffers from one annoying thing... jitter. The lasers are so sensitive that it reacts to soft mouse pads making it "jitter" when you left click. Razer fixed it by adding a crappy-ass firmware and a teflon o-ring to put around the laser.

I have large hands so that might not be an Issue for me.

Sounds like it has some of the same issues with the sensor as my razor mamba. Which is very finicky on what kind of surface you use. That alone might be what makes me to send it back. depends on how bad it is

although...... If the software/ drivers are better than the razors I might just keep it in place of the mamba.

We shall see..

I know the specs say these mice use a "twin-eye" sensor, but someone mentioned that it is the philip's twin-eye found in many Razer mice which have z-axis problems. I think it's best to stay away from these mice if you're worried of anything that has to do with gaming, especially FPS.

Anyone know if the RAT 5 uses the same sensor as the 7 or 9? Gut feeling tells me it's the best out of the group.

i know with the razer mamba which uses the same laser they started shipping out a Teflon o-ring that would go around the sensor to at least stop the jittering. Not sure the impact that it has on the z-axis issues. A similar solution could apply to the rat 7

What is the Z axis problem with Razer lasers ? I don't think I've experienced that problem, what exactly happens ? I'm using a Mionix Naos 5000 mouse & I think it's great, but I was looking at this for the customization aspect of it.

The mouse will consistently shift the cursor down and to the right when lifted and set back down as demonstrated in this video. From my understanding the Imperator uses the same "twin-eye" sensor as the R.A.T. 7.

then do you really need to change it? I can't help thinking the R.A.T. would be a downgrade (unless the shape is substantially better for you)

The things that really matter: shape & fit is critical for everybody, and the Philips v. Avago sensor question is critical for anyone who lifts their mouse during play. I have both sensor types, and am happy with both as I generally only lift occasionally (at non-critical times) to re centre the mouse on the pad. If you run a low speed sensitivity and often lift the mouse while aiming/moving, then stick with the Avago sensor.

Everything else is just shiny baubles for marketing and presentation.

Thanks for the info, was just liking the better pinky thing, but yeah I'll keep my Naos 5000.

Ok, lets get more feedback on this mouse shifiting down and to the right issue when lifting. That will pretty much kill it for me.

Just got mine tonight. didn't have much time to play with it . but it does have the same tracking as my mamba. and that same slippery feel. but so far the software seams stable. and the size fits my hand good. as was mentioned above I only lift to recenter at non critical moments. so the sensor thing isn't a deal breaker for me. hopfully in the next couple of days I can give more feedback

no matter how you lift it, it will always go down and to the right.... I'm really sad because i like everything else about it.

it's gotta get returned : /

I cant get the back and forward buttons to program. it will let me assign a key ,but when I go into game it does not function as it should. Also, I cannot name the key command. I type in a name and click ok, and it just stays untitled.

This defiantly isn't the mouse for you if you pick up all the time.

Thats ashame. Looked like a good mouse but I find my self picking mine up during gaming often and this would be to much to deal with. Sticking with my G9 for now.

I got the steelseries xai today... not installing drivers for it as i don't want it to fubar the firmware which i hear it can. you can adjust everything on the mouse...

it is fantastic.

that is all :p

(what's funny is it is pretty much the same shape as the intellimouse explorer when I was over a decade younger lol)

Without software for custom DPI settings (the way I want them) its kinda pointless. I wouldnt pay that much for a mouse that couldnt use the software it came with. I almost got this mouse but read so many bad things about it I changed my mind.

Got mine. This thing is really nice. Very well made and so far the laser seems fine to me. I'm stoked. The shift part does not bother me. I'm not a professional gamer nor Lan
gamer and I also don't pick up the mouse that often. I understand others concerns, but don't see how it's a deal breaker.

I'm having issues with not being able to program the forward and back button.

So Installing the drivers, i already had an issue,
smartechnology.exe
stopped working, so i can't go into profile editor win7 64
then it wouldn't move at all, till i guess i figured out this mouse does not work with the icemat mouse pad (frosted glass)
mind you i've used almost every razer mouse on this pad, 510/518 (other logi) and some ms mice too. I guess it really is the inability of the laser.

it's highly adjustable, but if you use the large pinky holder (ppl w/ this mice will know) it doesn't have teflon on the bottom so it scraps along the pad, i mean the reason to have a pinky holder, is to hold the pinky right? so you'd think you'd have weight on the pinky, so when that does happen, it scrapes along cuz it's not flush with the pad.

overall, fail and i've been waiting for this mouse for 6months? think i'll return to amazon.

I would advise everybody to steer clear of this mouse.

About the only thing that I like about this mouse is the way it feels in my hand. (Extra large here). fully adjustable. braided cord is nice. approximately 6'. buttons are laid out fairly decent. Purely subjective about how it fits my hand though. might be to big for someone else.

The bad:

Software is a big fail. Have had smartechnology.exe stopped working error show up on two occasions. (win7 64) also, Initially it would not save any key command. I uninstalled and reinstalled software/Drivers and finally was able to assign some key commands to the forward and back buttons and tested it within the software. I went into game (BFBC2) and none of my newly set programed key commands were working. left the game and went back into my new mouse profile and have not been able to assign any of the keys back.

I have been trying to contact cyborg tech support via there email contact info. and have had no response for 4 days now. I figured I might have better luck calling there tech support. only to see that there hours are
Monday - Friday: 8am - 12p & 1pm - 4pm (PST)
Closed Saturday, Sunday and most major US holidays

Which will make it virtually impossible for me to contact them as I work from about 6 am to 5-6 PM.

So in short.... There customer support is crap. as far as i know I could be just a little 100 square foot office. with 1 phone inside and a mailbox outside to make it legit.

The fact that you cannot program any keys at all is enough for any serious gamer to avoid this.

I got mine in the mail the other day and I love the hell out of it! It contours to your hand like nothing I've ever used. The back screw thing unscrews and it's an allen wrench that lets you adjust the pinky and thumb rests to your liking. It also comes with weights if you like it to be heavier or whatever. Simply amazing what they do now days with something that used to be so simple.

This must be isolated to your system. I have not experienced any of the software problems you suggest.

That's strange. because this is the only software that does this. about the only suggestion on there web site is to make sure you have the latest net. framework. Which I do. other than that I have many other brands of mice and never had this issue before.

I will be trying it on my other system here within the hour. Shall soon see if it is Isolated or not. this program reminds me of the way other programs reacted when 64bit first started becoming the norm. a lot of programs had issues with the 64 bit operating systems

the other issue is that it will not save the name of the key command. will always say untitled. it will let you type it in but will always go to untitled

I even tried to test this out on my winxp laptop, siad I needed net 3.5. So I download and install 4.0 still says I need3.5 to get the software working.

Ive had mine for a few days now and im starting to like it less and less.

1. It is NOT a comfortable mouse, no matter how you set it up. My mx518 was a comfortable mouse.
2. the thumb piece hinge is poorly designed. The hinge is on the bottom, you press on the top. It will just slowly close the more you use it, no matter how tight you try and make it.
3.The "3 mode" switch next to the left click is poorly placed and nearly impossible to press. You will left click 10 times befor you hit that button once.
4. The thumb wheel is all but useless and has no feedback whatsoever.
5. The main scroll wheel is way to loose and lacks feedback. It barely "clicks" when you scroll.
6. Another poor design flaw, when you have all 5 weights in and the palm rest is pushed it, the hinge for taking it off interferes with the weight adjustment screw and blocks you from taking off the palm rest.
7. The fricking mouse pointer will not stay in one place. If you slowly try and press a small button/link, the mouse move OPPOSITE of the way im going. I will slowly try and move the mouse "up" to click a link, but the mouse pointer is slowly moving down/left/right..etc You can even set the mouse down and watch it slowly do this without even touching the damn thing.

I really want to like this mouse, but im thinking its gonna be returned and ill jsut purchase a new mx518 to replace my old one.

.

I can get my Roccat Kone to do the same if I set the DPI high but the sensitivity low... frickin mouse never goes where I think its going to. The Roccat Kone was supposed to be all that (I think its garbage). Still, I think this might be something in your settings to work out. Try higher sensitivity and lower DPI and see if that doesn't straighten it out... thats all I had to do.

update,
uninstalled net4.0 on winxp laptop then installed .net3.5, ok so it needs the specific version to install. Then of course it promply crashes
smartechnology.exe fails

I really want this mouse to workout, i want to replace my nearly first edition death addler.

All these issues just make me believe in this product less and I should just rma it to amazon. (i'll give it another week of troubleshooting)

btw on their website they don't have updated drivers or software, you'll see nothing for download for the rat series. (i don't have a dvd installed on my main system so i thought i could d/l drivers instead, but i just had to share over the network to install from dvd)

for everyone that was able to get drivers to work and install pristinely, please say if you have win 7 32/64 and if your using .net 4.0 or 3.5

Update.

Tried it on my other computer. Programing keys worked. figured out that the mouse software will not work with Logitech g15 keyboard drivers installed. had to uninstall anything logitech.

o yeah , .NET Framework 3.5.1 here 64 bit

just packed mine back into the box, getting returned.

the mouse looks good. Too bad thats the only thing it can do "good."

going to try to uninstall my razer drivers tonite to see if that helps

the competition against the Philips twin eye is the avago9500 which has positive acceleration. However that is a more manageable inconvenience for those who pick up their mouse a lot making the twin eye sensor a poor choice for them

Eh. Between all of my IRL friends, nobody sees positive acceleration as an issue. using a mouse with acceleration on it for almost a decade now makes it a non-issue. I actually find it harder to play without acceleration.

Though lots of people who still play counterstrike see it as an issue... and that game is how old? :p

added some Teflon pad from a spare set of g7 hyperglides. to fix the pinky issue

Ah so glad someone else ahknowledges the pinky overlook too!, i was gonna do that fix too,in fact i would have replaced all the black teflon w/ the those teflon instead, i find the stealseries teflon the best of the bunch.

of course this is if i decide to keep the mouse, provided the damn drivers work for me.

and having to find a new mouse pad (i have been using the icemat frosted glass mouse pad for 5 years, as i noted b4 this mouse can't see it, so i'll need to get a new pad)

I myself am going to keep it. It has the same issues with with the laser as my mamba does ,but fits my hand better. so if anything it will replace the mamba that i use on my secondary computer. and I'll stick to my g5 if necessary
