Crysis Official Discussion.

You spent $7000 and all you have to show for GPU muscle is 8800GTS in SLI?

No offense, but if you want to break 30fps you'll need something more powerful in SLI. :p

(gain 2fps with 8800Ultra in SLI)

"All I have to show for it" is being the 4th fastest setup that has ever benched and submitted results to Futuremark. My 8800GTS's are the same cards that were released last year when they first came out. At this point in the game, I simply can't justify spending several hundred dollars more (not to mention that I would need to buy watercooling blocks) for the current generation video cards..

I think we ALL know that the answer lies in the next generation video cards. When they come out, we will all stop moanin' and groanin'.. Until then, we will all suffer a little. I have already been in close contact with a really good friend of mine with a 8800 Ultra SLi setup and he can only muster (on average) about 32-34 FPS. 32-34 frames per second, with dual Ultras!

No offense, but I'll wait til the next generation of video cards.

It is rather disheartening to see that even on the best PCs out there Crysis will struggle to reach 30fps on resolutions above 1600x1200.
Every game, including COD4, I have in my collection I can play at 1920x1200 with 4xAA, 8XAF with max detail and get a lovely smooth framerate on Vista.
But I can only get around 20-24fps on HIGH and that's with AA off.
Yet the two of the cores show about 50% and the other two cores only show 15% use. Not good.
The game feels rushed to me. I just hope future patches will improve the performance on high end PCs, otherwise I feel like I spent all that money upgrading my PC for nothing.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game but I just wished I was able to play with all the eye candy on at high res and still have a nice smooth framerate.
Oh well :D

I play at 1920x1080 and with all the settings at medium I'm at 40-50 fps most of the time. Turn the details down a little bit. It still looks 90% as good, but it's much more playable.

Hey Domingo.. Are you using a single 8800GTX? I had my settings on medium and it was little help. I only jumped a few FPS. What program are you using to measure your frames per second?

In game, hit "~" and then type "r_displayinfo 1" and hit enter....

I'm using a single GTX. I get no lag at 1280x1024 with AA off, and all settings on high in Vista using DX10. Xp has been really F'ing up on me lately and randomly freezing so I haven't tried it on there.

I actually used FRAPS, but seeing the post below yours, I guess there's an in-game measure, too. Are you on DX9 or 10? For me, DX10 didn't really make a lot of visual difference and performance certainly was better. I haven't tried it in the final version yet, but it was certainly a little smoother in the demo. Still, I've been on DX10 mode thus far in the final with no issues. Lowering the detail made a TON of difference. When everything was set to high I was getting single frames per second. At medium, I'm always above 30, and am usually floating above 40 unless there's a bunch of craziness going on.
I'm on a single GTX in Vista and use the 169.09 drivers right now. No overclocking of anything and I have vsnyc turned on via the in-game toggle (r_vysnc = 1) rather than the Nvidia panel. For some reason the Nvidia toggle breaks vsync in all of my games that have an in-game toggle.

I'm using DX10.. I just updated to the beta 169.09 driver as well.. For some reason, that driver would not install.. I went through 3 reboots before it finally took. Anyway, my FPS did go up (a little). At Medium settings, I am aroung 42 FPS. I haven't tested it under the High settings (yet). Is there a list of in-game toggle settings?

That is just stupid! This gen has been a disappointment, there has been no games to really stake claim to being DX10 must haves, yet Crysis was positioned to be that one. If we can't enjoy the next gen now with our shinny new high end cards then why bother with the gen after this !

I learned my lesson, seeing that this was my first build I had to choose something good. All in all net set of GPU's will be way after release.

One nice thing about Crysis is the surround sound. Seriously if you don't have it hook it up and it puts you into a whole new immersion!

In the first level (one in the demo) I got into a crazy grenade/shotgun fight at the checkpoint. grenade sounds are aweeeesome!!!!!!

Heh wait till a tank fires a shot off and you got a good setup it'll surprise you hahaha. I actually have to turn my sub down when playing Crysis.

I was kinda bummed that Crysis didn't have many DX10 features that actually made a difference in the game.

I thought the reason the E3 demos we all drooled over looked so good was because it made extensive use of DX10.

However, DX10 seems to only have a negative impact on performance and almost no visual improvements.

Maybe future patches will bring in more DX10 goodies?

EDIT: I know I don't have DX10 hardware yet (waiting for the [H] reviews) but I wish the leap to DX10 hardware would have meant a double bonus because then I can make use of the hardware with Vista.

Now I see why you spent $7k... you wanted the benchmark status. I didn't realize you were running under phase either...

You're one hell of an enthusiast to justify all that :p

Videocard manufacturers and game developers like those who did Crysis are ripping you guys off

DX10 is strictly faster then 9 on my setup in the retail game.

I agree we are very ripped off. We all thought must have for hardware and must have game and now we are like maybe we could of kept some of that extra money :p.

Visually there's almost nothing you can do in DX10 that you cannot do in DX9. Even game developers say this in interviews (well at least the ones not on nVidia's or microsoft's payroll)
DX10 was supposed to be more about performance, and raising the DX9 limits on certain features.
However due to the increased system resources of Vista compared to XP (and the early poor drivers from most companies) most of the time it provides poor performance.
And as for the technical specifications which were raised, video cards are still too weak to make any use of it (for example most games don't ship with 4096x4096 textures etc).

Microsoft rushed DX10 just to help them market Vista. Its that simple - its nowhere as great a leap dx9 was over dx8 or any of hte previous generations.

I dont understand the performance complaints from some of you guys with 8800's. My buddy came over today with his machine which has an 8800GTS 320 and it played butter smooth with all settings at high except shader quality (or whatever it is) at 1600x1200. From what i can tell even on my machine the shader option is a massive drag on the performance with little difference in visual quality.

I can play it on my X1950pro on all medium except texture quality on high and shadows on low at 1600x1200 and its pretty smooth and still good looking.

Some of us want Very High settings. Also, I am personally pissed about being lied to about Quad core support being a big plus, and also the fact that the CEO said that the game is CPU dependent. Nothing Cevat Yerli has said has been completely true.

Very high is just DX10 right? We didnt have vista installed so couldnt try out DX10 so cant say on that.

I think it is very CPU dependant but moreso GPU dependant. Going from stock on my e6420 to 3.2GHZ gained me about 10FPS. Now that could have been fairly situational but a gain in performance from overclocking the CPU tells me at least to some extent that its CPU dependant.

so it says i can play @ 1920x1200 very high everything.. AA off... and it seems to play smooth enough.. until you get into a firefight.. its kinda hard to headshot anyway apparently i was cloaked about 10 yards away dead lined up shot (was in cloak) and apparently a bullet doesnt kill someone when it goes through their eye...

honestly strength and grab/throwing has been killing faster than shooting :p

multiplayer i dropped my settings way way way way down.. its impossible to play with any jitter... hell it takes long enough to spawn and go find some enemies... ( GET RID OF HAVING TO CLICK TO SPAWN) nuff said.... ohh ya 100P starting is annoying as well.. the game capture moves so fast.. you can win before you can even buy any good weapons... sniping is really useless.. so not cool... buy machine gun cloak in armor up spray on their spawn = win game

I've been playing around with a lot of the settings and I've found that the Nvidia vsync option, the internal vsync option, the Vista games folder, and even choosing DX10 vs. DX9 can make performance vary a LOT.
With DX10...make sure you keep the Vista games folder open. For some reason if you close it, the game will open in a window and vsync won't work...no matter what. If you use either r_vsync 0 or 1...your performance will vary a little, but you'll still get image tearing. However if you turn vsync on in the Nvidia panel it will work just fine. If you then use r_vsync 1 your performance should vary a lot, but it will go upwards of 60 and it won't ever drop below 30. My average is 42'ish. If you use r_vsync 0 (turning it off) it pretty much locks you at 30-32fps no matter what your refresh is set at. In other words - with an 8800, I recommend turning vsnyc on in the control panel and using r_vsync 1 in your autoexec. Turn your settings to medium (although I turned sound to max) and you'll be just fine. Like I mentioned earlier...keep the Vista games window open. It seems to be the key to avoiding the game opening in a window and actually making vsync no longer work.

For DX9 - the r_vsync toggle WILL WORK without the Nvidia panel. However performance is no good. It does the 30-32fps lockdown. If you turn it on via the Nvidia panel, too...it'll actually perform a little worse than the DX10 version. In other words...unless you hate universally turning vsync on, don't use the DX9 version. If you don't care about vsync...performance is almost identical to the DX10 one.

what happened to the tactical attachment that let you shoot like 4 or 5 guys then with the push of a button you could put them to sleep?
i always remember seeing them do that in early videos...i didn't attach the tactical attachment on every level, maybe i missed it?
i just had the one attachment that put single guys asleep

It was nerfed to the instant-use tactical attachment you start the game with, as it was determined to be too powerful.

Which makes sense as it was really way too overpowered, as cool as it was.

Just got the game today now that my midterms are over. Graphics are just fine as far as I'm concerned. I can't play it at its highest, but it is still by far the best looking game I have played.

And the gameplay is even better than the graphics. I didn't have long to play, but I just got to the first Korean village area.. what a thrill sneaking through it. And I don't even like sneaking levels. But I think since you're not specifically forced to do it, it's more fun to do.

Fun moment, I snuck throughout the base, getting to this large building in the center of the village. I go to the second floor and there is a guy there. So I cloak and choke him to death and slam him on a railing. Only problem, two seconds later his body slides down off the railing, and falls right in front of an enemy who proceeds to search me out in the house and shoot one shot before I can react. Suddenly I'm bum rushed by like 15 guys and I was done. Never had so much fun dying.

Good job Crytek. So far this is exactly what I'd expect the next evolution of Far Cry to be.

I had something similar happen. I love how a lot of the time when you take out guys something new happens you haven't seen before or expected. It makes the gameplay fresh and exciting. I love not knowing what to expect and how you can reload a save and try again and it doesn't happen the same way. Even explosions aren't ever the exact same.

I'm curious how many people use the Predator playing style. By this I mean, Cloak, sneak toward enemy while stopping to go prone and recharge cloak, then finally uncloaking nearby to shipe him or even grab and throw at another guy in strengh mode(my new favorite attack) and then quickly dissapearing into the jungle while his friends run around scared. I've played almost entirely this way so far.

I've also learned to super cloak jump to building roofs for better sniping too. (Strength jump and immediatly cloak in the air) Anyone else have any similar suit mode "exploits" (for lack of a better word)?

Well I don't even own an 8 series card much less 2 of them. I am still using a 7900GS with a Q6600 and 4 gigs of ram in Vista64. It took me a little while to get the game running smoothly and while I know it could look better I don't really care at the moment. The jungle foliage still looks better then in any other game I have played. I know I will come back to this game for years to come just like I did with Far Cry. So some day I will see it in all it's glory

The destructible environment is also done rather well and I hope the concept is adopted and implemented in to more games. (Yes, I know this isn't the first time it;'s been done.) The buildings collapse much the way I expected them to so I am not too disappointed. The sandbags were a bit of a disappointment though. The first time I encountered them I was hoping to see sand pour out of them when shot and also expected each bag to be an independent item, but oh well maybe next time.

The suit also adds a lot to the game and in my opinion anyone who is just cloak whoring is really missing out.

I do however have one problem with the game that no one else seems to be having. I only play the game for 20-30 min at a time. I just can't sit and play a FPS SP missions for hours on end like I once could and because of that I am having trouble finding my way to some of the way points. I am not very far in to the game and spent two 30 min gaming sessions trying to find my way to a primary objective. Once I made it I only spent about 20 min completing it and now I am having the same problem yet again with the next way point.

The tactical map (if you can even call it that) is useless or at least it seems to be for the stage I am on. I know the game gives you some info verbally about what way to go but since I only play for short sessions at a time I can never remember what they said and there doesn't seem to be any kind of log to reference for recent communications. This was never a problem with the way Far Cry maps were laid out and it's starting to get frustrating. At this point I have spent more time being lost then I have completing objectives. Something as simple as actually being able to make out roads and rivers on the map would go along way right now. Or rather then the objective just saying make your way to the checkpoint it could say something like. Head up/down steam to objective or make your way up the east/west/north/south slope of the mountain to objective.

Part of what makes the game so great is the openness of the maps. Until your try to head to an objective and find nothing but miles of cliff face and deep valleys blocking your path every way you try to go. It just seems like the checkpoints are too far apart to just get a one time verbal clue that is way to easily forgotten when you save and don't come back to for a day.

I also wish you could hit people with the things you pick up not just throw them. Sometimes I wish I could just beat people with a hunk of the tree that just got shot down. By the way, has anyone else picked up a tree top and walked around the jungle with it? ( I got bored with the demo while I was waiting for the full game.)

Oh and sorry about the rant

Sweet idea, almost Monty Pythonesque :D

I just got the full game trough my door and I am very much looking forward to playing it. :)

I'm running the rig in my sig, and I can play at 1680x1050, Very High, No AA. (Vista Business x64) Not sure what framerates are, but its more than "playable".

For me, its still to early to tell what I think about the game. I'm about where the demo left off.

I don't understand. I have the latest drivers, rig in sigh, and I have to go medium/1280 x 1024 or else I get major slowdowns during firefights.....

Maybe it is the extra two gigs?

Could be, I also have more video memory as well.

Really got me, some people say its a cpu bottleneck, others say gpu bottleneck. I have no idea.

How do you think Crysis will run with the system I have listed in my sig?

Its gonna be rough.. you processor barely meets the minimum requirement and you are going to need more RAM IMHO. Also, with your video card, don't expect much over medium settings. In some cases, depending on your resolution, you might even dip into low settings to get everything running smoothly. Based on your signature, I would definately ensure that you don't have any unnecessary programs running in the background (also check your MSCONFIG). You might be unnecessarily loading programs like Adobe, certain logitech software (webcam stuff.. ugh), quicktime, real player, yahoo (or any modern messenger service), etc.. Those programs just suck up resources that could be used elsewhere... :(

I really love the abilities the more I use them the more I get creative and try new ways of killing the Koreans. I wish I had more energy, cause sometimes after doing a cool Speed Punch Jump or some other advanced attack I find my self in a position where I haven’t killed enough of the guys and end up out of energy and being killed.

I have been enjoying the ability to destroy most objects. At one point I cloaked up to an outpost, checked inside and saw 3 guys standing around. 1 guy had his back close to the wall and I walked up to that spot on the outside, recharged, used Strength to Punch through the wall panel, grabbed the guy and pulled him back through the whole, toss him off the cliff to the road and tossed a nade into the room, and speeded away.

Similarly I came up to a roadblock, I speeded up to the roadblock, power jumped over it, came down with the shotgun right on top of a guy, killed him with 1 shot, grabbed the guy to my left and tossed him into another guy. Then I cloaked and got behind the last guy as he shot wildly and grabbed him from behind and tossed him into the air and shot him before he hit the ground.

I felt like Jet Li in the One. I am really enjoying these abilities more then being able to stop time in Time Shift. Cloaking is making me super sneaky, Attacking a guy and vanishing right in front of the other guy as he freaks out. Or Being down a ways from a guy as he Screams “Die like Fucking Dog!” Then running up to him and he has that Shocked look on his face and you know he’s thinking “How did he do that?” Punching him in the head and tossing him into a wall.

I love this game, can’t wait to play it more!

Well, I'm closing in on the end of the game. The game is fairly short. The game so far has been fairly enjoyable. But there are very few really memorable moments. Certainly there is nothing in here to top the bit in Farcry when you have to jump off a waterfall and get to a downed chopper with no ammo, does anyone remember that? Crysis does sag towards the end and gets more and more ridiculous - without giving spoilers the new enemy really are dreadful (the PCZone review was spot on in this respect) as are the level designs particularly on the level called Core - what a load of crap. I even started missing the dastardly stupid Koreans with their cunningly dimbo A.I. I loved the Koreons with Nanosuits and miniguns...shame it was only brief. Sadly no replay value for me, I've got COD 4 and Gears of War to play next...

Technically - Crysis runs very nicely on my PC at 1280 x 1024, no AA everything high. I think the game uses loads of RAM as the HDD can make the game 'choppy' on some areas. The graphics look stunning, the frozen jungle levels and the early jungle levels look amazing (particularly the level where you can run up the shallow river, the water effects are glorious on high) The game has crashed half a dozen times so far - just to the desktop - so nothing major. Graphics are pretty glitchy using the 169.09 drivers, betas what do you expect!?

I'm on the very last boss of the game. And I'm having a difficult time. Since those little buggers keep respawning on me, I have no chance other than running the entire time. You have but a split second to line up your shot. I must of taken 8 Missile Lanuchers used all the ammo from them and the hatch STILL will not open to me to nuke. I think I'm hitting the correct place. It's the shiny blue area. I might have a bugged loading like from before but who knows... *sigh*

The first time I encountered them I was hoping to see sand pour out of them when shot and also expected each bag to be an independent item, but oh well maybe next time.

They are independent. I punch a sand wall next a turret and they break apart individually.

They are after you break the section. By independent I meant I wanted to be able to walk over and pick one off the top. Prior to breaking a section of the sand bag wall they are just that joined to form a section of wall. With the sections linked to make a bunker.

On the up side shooting holes in the LN2 cans and watching them dance was cool but nothing new.
