Crysis 3 revealed

The biggest thing they need to fix about crysis is the boring tedious gameplay. The first one was only fun if you made piles of stuff to blow up and drove jeeps into buildings full of explosives (which they removed in the second). The gameplay has always been generic uninspiring and dull 99% of the time. :(

Take the following with massive grains of salt:

Man, how things have changed. The original Crysis was an amazing PC FPS title but it’s sequel was really restricted by consoles. Even though Crytek said – back then – that its development would not be limited by consoles, we said immediately that that would not be the case. Crytek afterwards revealed that the game was developed with consoles in mind and that’s one of the reasons why the nanosuit was redesigned (in order to be fully playable with a gamepad). Fast forward a couple of months and here we are today with Crytek admitting that Crysis 2 was held back by consoles and that Crysis 3 will offer some extra love to the PC gamers.
First things first though. Crysis 3 is powered by CryEngine 3 Plus. Yeap, this is the next level of the CryEngine 3, as Crytek has been working, tweaking and updating their engine this whole time. According to Crysis 3′s producer Mike Read – in an interview with GameSpot – this new, enhanced engine gives Crytek the power to do some unique things. Well, Crysis 3 PC does look good but can’t even come close to Watch Dogs, Star Wars 1313 or Square Enix’s and Nvidia’s tech demos. Is CryEngine 3 ready to compete with those next gen titles? We surely hope so, though Crysis 3 won’t be as impressive as the afforementioned tech demos.
Mike has also revealed that Crysis 3 will feature more open environments, compared to Crysis 2. Those environments will be showcased later this year. Not only that, but Crytek will try to push the envelopes of PC graphics this time around. That’s according to Mike at least. PC gamers will also receive a little bit of an extra experience with Crysis 3. Mike didn’t reveal what that extra experience would actually be, but our guess is that the PC version of Crysis 3 will come – from the start – with DX11 features and higher resolution textures. In fact, Mike confirmed in a live chat that the game will support DX11, so there you have it guys. Day-1 DX11 support.
You can find below GameSpot’s interview that comes with some PC footage from Crysis 3. Enjoy everyone!

Crytek is well known for pushing the graphical boundaries as both Far Cry and Crysis 1 were – visually – way ahead of their time. However, their decision to start developing multiplatform titles seems to have backfired, as the company is not considered the pioneers of PC graphics. And it seems that’s one of the reason why the company is already tired of current generation consoles and is really looking forward to the next generation era.
In the latest EA live chat, Crysis 3′s producer Mike Read revealed that the company is ‘tired’ of the current generation consoles and that’s one of the reasons why they’ll be putting a lot of focus on the PC platform.
As Read said:

“The current generation of consoles is the longest generation of consoles we’ve ever seen, ever. I think it’s definitely that at least for Crytek it’s coming to the end of its line where we are really unable to… we’re really gonna push the hardware as far as we possibly can.”

It’s pretty obvious that Crytek has hit a ‘wall’ with current generation consoles. Read admitted that the current generation consoles are at their end and that Crytek is limited by them. Of course Read rephrased that sentence later by saying that they’ll do everything they can to push both X360′s and PS3′s hardware, but we bet that everyone got the memo. And although it did pay off this whole porting thing of CryEngine 3 to X360 and PS3, the company cannot simply stand still when there are other companies joining the fight of providing next-generation visuals to the PC.
Read then continued:

“The PC is just allowing us to push that so much more and that’s why we really want to put a lot of that focus to that and to continue building up with our technology base.”

The question here is whether Crytek will develop a PC centric game after Crysis 3 to prove those claims or a tech demo that will be on par with Nvidia’s Dawn Tech Demo, Square Enix’s Tech Demo and the upcoming Unreal Engine 4 Tech Demo.

this is what we are all waiting for in a game like this -_-
My post was somewhat tongue in cheek since when Crysis 2 came out there was a massive outcry about destructible environments --or more precisely the absence thereof-- and not being about to shoot down the trees like in the first game.

The nature of sandbox gameplay is that you largely create your own fun. Crysis became tedious because, as the game progressed, it became less open, more claustrophobic, and gave the player less freedom to choose his own approach to situations.

There's also the issue of Crysis's weapons becoming tired and boring to play with. Four basic classes of weapons, and all the variations in each class amounted to basically nothing. For all its faults, at least Rage gave you a ton of fun weapons to work with.

From the videos I've seen. C3 will have more "open" environments like the original. Supposedly seven individual sandbox environments with multiple paths. So at least there's replay value. How linear will these paths be? That is the question.

It almost seems like they're openly admitting that Crysis2 became a console version just to boost funding for Crysis3. Milk the cow.

Well if that was their intention it didn't work out very well considering they only sold the same number of copies across all three platforms as opposed to what Crysis 1 and Warhead sold exclusively on PC.

Psycho is confirmed to return in Crysis 3. That is pleasing news. Maybe we'll see Nomad too.

Far as im aware nomad is dead, he died in the comic series that lead upto crysis 2. Crysis 3 Psycho seems to ahve a different voice actor unfortunately, theres a vid out there that has an English accent coming across comms and its not the same as in Crysis and warhead, possible its some other english guy but im doubting it.

Actually its this vid:

I did not read the comic series... Am I missing out on anything interesting?

Yes that is the gameplay footage from E3. In Gamespot's E3 coverage they conducted an interview and demonstration -- the Crytek representative (I forgot his name...) confirmed that is the voice of Psycho you hear in the beginning, hence my post. I had my doubts when I first saw the footage since it does seem to be another voice actor. I am pleased he will be coming back as he is my favorite character in the Crysis franchise.

It's not like the story arc from Crysis to Crysis 2 makes any sense anyway. They might as well do whatever they want with it at this point. Set some levels in Iran fighting terrorist "aliens." That's sure to increase sales!

At least you can shoot down the trees again: IGN Live: Crysis 3 Demo - E3 2012

Yay...several MASSIVE steps backwards in Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 brings us back to where we were 5 years ago, best way to mask the fact that we've made no progress in that time, except for some rather limp DX11 features tacked on to Crysis 2 post release.

It's very difficult to take this franchise seriously any more.

crysis is cool to look at but single player first person shooters bore the shit out of me. I bought battlefield 3 at launch and haven't played the campaign for a second. Multiplayer is why I buy shooters

and from what i hear the MP is pretty terrabad in crysis

Not sure why people make out Crysis 1 to have some kind of amazing SP...sure, you could track all through the woods but there wasn't much to actually do there; you still ended up at the same locations to shoot the same guys over and over again. Towards the end, after you emerged from that terrible alien zero-gravity chamber is where the game actually gets somewhat fun.

Using Battlefield as your benchmark for SP FPS experiences is probably why. :p

It doesn't have a great SP campaign. The physics and destructible environments were what made it fun for me. It was awesome running a hummer off a cliff onto a building full of explosive barrels, or throwing a grenade into a hut and watching it rip apart. I also loved exploding a dock while North Korean 0009x1c was taking a piss.

It's part of what drew people into Diablo 3 before they got bored. Fucking everything explodes around you. PEW PEW Michael Bay!

Crysis 2 had like 5% of that interactivity.

Ah, that's a good point. Although ripping the .50 off of an APC and mowing people down with it was pretty satisfying.

Besides the disaster of a "story," I also think Crysis 2 had a better structured campaign than Crysis. Neither of them compare to Far Cry though.
