Any news on the ATRI Crossfire cards? ATI's website states they will be shipping mid-August. Well it's mid-August and no news. I can't even find a mobo that supports it and those were supposed to be available in June. Anybody have any word on this?

I heard they aren't worth waiting for and to buy SLI if you want the best performance you can get. They will be new technology and will new some time to mature.

Nextgen ATI isnt using SM 3.0 right? After playing the F.E.A.R demo.. I think it might be worth it to have a card that supports it. Although I havent been keeping track of ATi's progress so I could be completely wrong. :p

And you know SLi has better performance because you obviously have a Crossfire rig set up and have run benchmark comparisons? Shit man, share the numbers with us cos we are all dying to see the results!!!!

So it's taken Nvidia's SLi over 5 years to mature their drivers from it's original source in Voodoo 2? I bet any amount of money that ATi will have mature drivers alot sooner than it's taken NV, shit would SLi driver's be even classed as mature yet? I wonder where NV SLi tech would be right now if they hadn't bought 3DFX?

Who did you hear this from?, id love to know!!

Nvidia's SLI technology has only been out for like a year to the consumer's grasp. So wtf is this 5 year shit you speak of?

As of now, Nvidia has been releasing new driver updates with even more support. Crossfire had some advantages that people liked over SLI, but nvidia responded to that by releasing and going to release more driver updates that counter crossfire's suppose advantages.

Crossfire worth wait? Nah.

SLI worth the purchase? If u got money, yeah.

Single cards still the best buy IMHO.

Considering the only numbers I've seen:

A. Come from ATI
B. Concern 3dmark

I'd take any news about it with a grain of salt, until Steve manages to get his hands on it.

Please do research on the origins of NV's SLi tech. I think you'll find out that they 'stole' 3DFX's work when they bought them out....but back in the V2 days I'd say 3DFX drivers where better as ALL games worked.....so yeah, at least 5 years probably more like 7-8 years really, so go and find this 'shit' out for yourself.....

Concerning NV's SLi drivers, are people still complaining about the same things not getting fixed on release after release after beta release? To me, that isn't a 'mature' driver....

I agree tho, if you've got the cash go for it, but spouting utter shit about SLi being more powerful than Crossfire? Please....

Unless you have a crossfire setup or know someone who does,i would say SLI is the shit right now see as how theres no other cmpetition.

Seein as how theres no crossfire available,i would say Yes SLI is king shit right now, unless you care to prove otherwise....

anandtech had a preview of crossfire =p
It seems that in alot of tests X850XT crossfire > 6800 Ultra SLI only setup to beat the X850XT Crossfire is the 7800GTX SLI and i hope it does considering its a next gen card to the X850XT =p

Yep 3dfx had rock solid drivers in their day, every game used the sli to its full potential without having to piss around with drivers.

Nvidia drivers are ok but they always fix something and break another, a bit like the shimmering bug on my brothers setup with battlefield 2 and halflife 2, they will probably fix that in the next betas but fuck something else up as always(they have had ages to fix this aswell). Nvidia Has had a hell of a head start with Sli but it still has its problems, their seems to be new beta drivers every few days. With all the constant shitty drivers i reckon Crossfire could well be worth the wait. My brother has been waiting too long just for one fix, he is considering changing his whole rig to ati crossfire if it doesnt get the shimmering bug sorted soon.

Well then ATI's entire line of cards was "stolen" from ArtX

Last I heard ATI was having trouble with their southbridge chipset and were going to try and use a ULI southbridge. Maybe they are just going to wait until they get their own southbridge up and running to have a complete package.

PhoenixC5 said:
you should prolly check your info there man. nvidia SLi and the original 3dfx sli are nothing alike. they did not "steal" anything. hell, even if they used the same tech (which they didnt, they bought it...they didnt steal it).

nVidia SLi:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scalable_Link_Interface

3Dfx:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3dfx

You can read about the two. They are not the same tech or related in any way.

Obviously they aren't identical as the way the card's connect are totally different and the way they run games, e.g game profiles. But do you really think that NV have used nothing from 3DFX's tech? Or are you just saying NV bought 3DFX out just so they could use the term SLi?

My point is without 3DFX tech and R&D NV wouldn't have the part thay have today...my second point is that ATi will have driver's on par at least (I'd say) with SLi alot faster than NV has even without assimilating another companies tech.....

my statement is that they are not the same. meaning they didnt steal the tech from 3dfx since its not the same tech... not sure where you came up with your statement of the just bought them for the term sli...???

and last i checked, ArtX designed all the current ATI stuff, so lets start talking about assiimilating another companies tech. you arent making any sense here...

and my sli will kill your not-yet-existing crossfire. when it comes out, then you can start to talk about drivers and tech. until then, shut up.

Tigerblade, in response to all your posts, you are a whiny ATI !!!!!! !!!!!!, I buy cards on how good they are, my last card was a 9600 XT, now I have a 6800. You got to buy from companies that know what is good at the time, I feel that it is really stupid to reward Ati for doing worse than Nvidia. also, concerning the R520/ crossfire, I have a feeling that this will be ATi's "FX" series, theyhaven't realeased either technology yet. I am betting ATi will be slaughtered the same way nvidia was with the FX series. NOT only did nvidia really hype up the 5800, BUT it
-came out late-was too hot
-used 128bit mem interface
-didn't use 8X1 pipeline halving the pixel fill rate

ON TOP OF ALL OF THAT, THE 5800 DIDN'T ONLY NOT MATCH THE 9700 it sucked complete @$$ and had performance about as good as an UNDERCLOCKED 9600. How did people resond? by not buying the FX, IF crossfire ends up as a dud, I hope absolutely nobody will reward ATI with their money, let ATi go out of business for all I care. IF Ati's R520/Crosfire turn out great, I hope that nobody spends money on NV cards.

NOT TO MENTION THE FACT THAT ATI CARDS USE FP24, THE SECOND TO LOWEST FLOATING POINT PRECISION.

it is also possible that both companies will have great products at the same time. like the x800/x850 and the 6800gt/ultra. both were great. if it happens again, great. but until ATI actually releases a product, dont open your mouth about how great its GOING TO BE. i however will continue to talk about how great my sli setup is cuz i actually have one and use it ;)

Coming from two generations of ATI drivers and now a 7800GTX owner, Nvidias drivers suck. Too many "leaked" betas that break more than they fix and the quaterly/semi-annual official drivers are nothing to jump for joy.

back on topic: we will have to see what it has when released. From the Anad article, it looks very promising.

i agree its promising. but, until it actually releases, its hard to say.

oh, and did you really just complain about leaked and beta drivers? thats why they are leaked and beta, cuz they arent ready yet. ;)

Prozac overdose? beta = software not ready ( use at own risk ) aka they can fix some problems yet cause more. reason why they aren't official. now i question your intelligence.

Tigerblade - Dude, you need to chill and let go of your ATI " !!!!!!ismness ". Stop attacking Nvidia for bullshit reasons. Stop your whining - you're just making yourself look like an idiot.

They are both equally inferior, nvidia decent card but questionable optimizing
http://www.3dcenter.org/artikel/g70_flimmern/index_e.php
the 7800gtx cheats to gain speed, a gf4 can pump better af 8x so has ati done this also. \
ATI good card but questionable drivers, and stability troubles.
The logic they are both nice cards use the one u prefer best and don't spoil everyones fun.
I have a gf4 ti4200 is a nice card but is starting to show age. would like to experiment with a ATI card this time, hopefully they'll release the R530 sometime Oct, Dec. Not gettin older ATI because Smart Shader 3.0 is a must and i don't belief in 24bit float point 32 is the way to go. About Xfire, I think it might be good maybe better than SLI but eventually is gonna be handicapped by cpu and ram. ATI is doing a mistake by offering xfire to theyr old cards, they should just do it with the new r530 because is gonna take too long to make drivers for new architechture cards and old. Smart Shader 3 a big jump, so is 32bit float point to program. Means ill take a while to make drivers for theyr non sm3 cards

I'm now being called an ATi !!!!!! because I'm calling BS on an NV !!!!!! who is saying Crossfire is shite?? Yeah that's logic for ya......And I'm such an ATi !!!!!! that I have a 6600GT in a shuttle.....forgot...must buy all things ATi in future as not too disappoint the zealots on here

Everyone who attacks me as a !!!!!! obviously never read my post. At the end of the day Yes a GTX Sli setup is the fastest thing out at the mo. Read my post and I'm calling BS on an obvious NV !!!!!! calling Crossfire crap.....how can you call something crap when you know nothing of it???? Or does your !!!!!!ism not see this plain 'bullshit' as you call it?

Yeah but your whole Nvidia Stole SLi Tech was pretty stupid.

Prozac overdose? beta = software not ready ( use at own risk ) aka they can fix some problems yet cause more. reason why they aren't official. now i question your intelligence

Compare the Broken Betas to the Monthly WHQL Certified Drivers ATi produces every month? Just Because they have the title Beta Attached doesnt mean you should defend Nvidia. Their is no reason they cant do better with their Drivers. They are making some mega bucks I mean comeon.

I think they took stuff/ideas/tech from 3dfx.....why would they not??

My opinion. End of.

Yeah, I'm sure they did, but they did not steal it. You act like it was a bad thing that Nvidia purchased a company and then used some of their technology.

Also, who's to say that Nvidia worked on SLI in the past 5 years? They may have not done anything with the tech up until PCIe came out because we had this magical thing know as AGP.

It's not a bad thing at all, people stand on the shoulders of others in all walks of life to gain a better vantage point/product. The stolen remark was to wind up idiots that can't read between the lines and to have a laugh at ppl that beleive gfx cards and the respective companies are the be all and end all of life as we know it and will argue till the end of time over the corporation that rips them off left right and centre and laughs in your face for your loyalty.

What I think is BS, which I'll mention again, is the NV !!!!!! BS about performance they know nothing of and the fact that NV invented SLi....they didn't. And I'm telling you now there will be remanants of 3dfx tech in the latest SLi and NV will have used 3dfx idea's and R&D to develop their existing products.

I still can't beleive I'm arguing with you people, you've agreed with my points.

Anyways I've more important things to do than argue about silicone boards, like sort a burglary out.

Peace.

Really? That's crazy, because I thought most companies that purchased other companies did so to not use their technology. Thanks for clearing that up.

We need a mod in here to lock this, because this thread is a flame war about phantom products that can't be argued over since NOONE has them, well, except nV which has SLi out as well as their newest cards. And two X850XT's better outpace two 6800U's as the X850XT's because X850 was a refresh, remember? Silly kids.

Please people make up your minds on the matter

I think Crossfire has potential to be the SLI beater but I will never sell nVidia short, SLI is a great tech that lets you enjoy tomorrows speeds today!

Was it a bit of a ripoff to have to go out and drop over $1000 bucks just to enjoy top end SLI... for sure, but was it worth it when you get in that game and smoke the FPS rate... FUCK YEAH!

If Crossfire can take a X850XT-PE and push it over a 7800GTX and just shy of a 7800GTX SLI set up, I will be impressed!

Will I base my next video card buy on who has the fastest card or set up, yes. But I will not be a FAN BOY about anything I haven't seen first hand!

People Crossfire will be faster than SLI, because ATI's top card right now (X850XT-PE) is the fasted card you can buy (NOT counting the 7800GTX).

Will the R520 be faster than a 7800GTX, of course it will, ATI would be foolish just to match nVidia.

Will a Crossfire R520 be faster than a 7800GTX SLI... It had better be!

But untill I see it, the 7800GTX is the king!

That is what you are doing here pimping hardware that the only test we have seen shows it about equal and lacking functional AA?

People Crossfire will be faster than SLI, because ATI's top card right now (X850XT-PE) is the fasted card you can buy (NOT counting the 7800GTX).
Bzzzzzt. Wrong 7800GT is faster than X850XT PE as well.

Will the R520 be faster than a 7800GTX, of course it will, ATI would be foolish just to match nVidia.
Bzzzzzzt. Wrong. 1. Wanting to do something, and being able to do something are two different things. 2. Every GPU ATI has ever released, except the one they bought from ArtX (R300) has been slower than nVidias. Why would this be any different? Because they bought the R300 from ArtX?

Will a Crossfire R520 be faster than a 7800GTX SLI... It had better be!
See above, and add: 1. Will the motherboards be good? 2. Does anyone want/need a high dollar SM2, FP24 based multicard solution in the era of the 7800GTX and 7800GT SLI? 3. Is it a good thing to have your solution scale to the slower card? 4. How many AFR profiles will ATI have out of the gate? 5. How many driver issues will ATI have out of the gate?

But untill I see it, the 7800GTX is the king!
Agreed.
