CrossFire for the x800 series is too little too late...the resolution limitation is absolutely ridiculous...I don't know why they even bothered...

R520 is where CrossFire will have its chance to shine...I'll wait for that before passing judgement on the whole thing...but in its current incarnation...CrossFire is just sad

QFT - well put, nothing to add. I vote in a week, then ;)

i know crossfire is extremely late, but its performance is better then dual 6800U's so i can't deny its power.

I thought the performance was similar to two 6800U's and cost more than the single card 7800 GT/X solution that beats it. Look at cost, when you factor in cost of a new system board and a new crossfire video card, which will total more than a 7800 GTX, I just can't reasonably say it has an advantage at all. Especially given resolution limitations.

Yeah I think it's pretty disappointing, but then. If I had the spare money around, I wouldn't get Sli either.

I do have the spare money at the moment, but I'm looking at CPUs. 7800gtx for teh w1n!

And yeah, the fact that they could splice CrossFire together in a year is pretty impressive...what would have been more impressive? if they did it without the resolution limitation, without the dongle, and actually came up with a good plan from the beginning instead of letting nvidia get the drop on them...

Because SLi Came out on Time and had no problems? Right Empty?
Jesus it seems like you guys safely erased SLis true history now that its been a year and solved its problems. The Reason I am so lenient on Cross Fire is because I realize now how this dual GPU Crap goes through a cycle of sorts. With SLi It took a year to fix the Widescreen and Dual Screen Issue along with Performance and game profile issues. THe Overclocking issues and more flexible GPU mixing Features are being includuded in either the next set of Drivers or the Current (not an SLi owning guy here so writing that from my head). Empty dont conclude that just because what I said was not insulting CrossFIre 100% That I feel that its a great item and everyone should buy it. Jeez itseems that as soon as someone looks at this product from a diffrent view they are proclaimed fan boys and idiots. I know the Resolution and Frame Rate limits and I know they suck. I know that for the X8x0 Series its a Hardware based problem. I know that it wont ever get fixed either. I see X8x0 Crossfire as a Beta to R520 CrossFire.
Wow Empty nice job stating the obvious about what would have been better their. Real good, bot hcompanies have made some mistakes and both companies mistakes drive this market and technology forward.

The only real beef you have is the resolution limits and that was a design tradeoff. If you understood that than they made a choice to allow ANY x800 card to be used as a slave then you understand why limits. I did not say it was the best move only it allows for some options. The dongle thing is pointless of an agurement..its ok for AIW cards, it was ok for the Voodoo2 SLI, and any power user that wants the perfromance will do what they have to...ie no dongle will stop them...

And beating 6800U SLI would be impressive...if they were doing it a YEAR ago..

Actually its not bad. I had excetped ATIs method to be a bit slower out of the gate. Writting drivers that has to work with 3 differnet rendering modes accross two different GPUs is not easy. The fact that when the two cards are in SLI and its proframce so the same kinds of gains as the 6800sli did is not bad for the first pass at it...

Consumers out for buying one of these new sollutions need realistic and informative comparisions when making a buying decision. What they do not need is fiction or games like "but back 12 months ago the story was this or that blah.......

I completely agree with you. But with next gen from ATI less than 10 days away, wouldn't any smart consumer wait to see what ATI offered before making that choice? And then wouldn't you want to see what the xfire can do then as well? Your right the x800 xfire makes no sense. But that does not mean xFire itself does not...

no SM3 and HDR for 12 months now, X800XT-Press Edition, X700XT, crossfire, R520 delay.

Oh dear god, not this HDR crap again. You have been listening to too much nV propoganda, I can link many threads were Brent has tried to put this to rest....sadly seems he has failed :(

Yeap 100% correct. But your judging old tech vrs new tech. Wait till the R520 shows up then see how xfire works. I completly agree this is the best ATI has now...but not for very long :)

All you fanATIc's need to get over yourself..

You and ever one here on the [H]ardforum's know shitfire is a HUGE flop..if it had come out ONE YEAR AGO...then we could all talk...but since it's a YEAR late...well it's a huge flop...

Maybe just maybe..you fanATIc's will get some pride back when the r520 comes out...who knows. ;)

have some of you guys forgotten???

Even though the xfire x8xx is a little faster or overall faster or slower, (doesn't matter) It doesn't have the IQ that the 6xxx has. with future games the x8xx will be crap for IQ compared to the 6xxx series. So as i see it xfire for the x8xx series is a waste of money.

Has worse IQ than 6K series cards? ROFLMA...yeah, right. Put down the crack pipe and step away from the keyboard. The only place the X8xx series cards lagged in IQ was behind the 7K series cards and their new AA mode.

You can't base your opinions on the R4xx based systems. Wait for a week to see how it runs on R5xx based systems as they "should" not have the limitations of what we just saw in the reviews. I for one will not buy it if the R5xx can't do higher than 1600 x 1200.

Misfire, but they had to bring it out, even with their current design limitations.

Having the crappy dual-card implementation isn't as bad as not having one at all, when it comes down to positioning in the market.

Sorta like, "Yeah, we're not quite up to Nvidia on this feature, yet, but we CAN do it, and we will catch up." versus "Uh, nope, sorry, we can't do that at all".

They'll fix it, if SLI/crossfire remains something of interest to the enthusiasts.

When is the question. At this point, you might as well get dual gtx's if you want dual-card performance, because the ATI solution is still going to be resolution and refresh-capped on the r520.

The crossfire platform shows favourably against the nVidia cards of the same generation, namely, the 6800 series. Apart from the res/refresh rate limitations, that is.
If the x1800 line of cards compares favourably against the 7x00 series, and the refresh limitations are addressed, I think crossfire will do fine.

and you already know how it performs with 520's?

The chipset is looking pretty good and will improve more with the 600 series... ;)

And another...
What are you talking about?

Lets make this simple.
Crossfire is a technology that allows 2 cards to run together to increase performance. It is not the video card technology itself. We will have to see how r520's perform singly, and in crossfire, to draw conclusions on crossfire performance with the new generation cards. People who use crossfire will be 'living in the past' than SLI users will be...

Crossfire is awesome. ATI will put Nvidia out of business with it.

You know, they use it for the military and stuff so that means it must be really good.

They use it in the military to torture terrorists by forcing them to watch games at 60hz.

X850XTCrossfire rapes 7800GTXSLI

image0125sp.gif

This is only one of a few of the benchmarks where it "rapes" Anyone who read the rest of the review saw that it got smacked down more than a few times.

I am dissapointed in CrossFire, hopefully it will work a lot better with X1800

Those benchmarks look more like CPU bottlenecking (except the HL2, where the crossfires pwns).

However...

It's Toms.

from THG and at 1024x768?

yeah, that makes sense. lets all base our opinions off this shitty graph. crossfire rocks!

seriously though, as of hte hardocp review of x8xx series xfire, it sucks. i would be very surprised if it WASNT much better with the R520 though.

the wait is over.crossfire backfired.maybe ATI intentionally put this deal out so the next card (oh wait we will rule over you with our 5xx whatever) will look better. I doubt it. i just cant wait! :D That THG graph is laughable...crank up the resolution and put it into TRAA (oops,I forgot backfire cant do that) or add HDR and we'llsee what will happen. I hope the 5xx whatever is better......then maybe well get to see what nVidia has up it's sleeve. Now for that I can wait.

I read the THG also.... They can't touch Brent and Kyle's reviews.

But I still stand my ground that I think ATI made a mistake releasing CrossFire for the X800 and X850's, should have held back and released it for the X1800 only.

Or to avoid the "dumbing down" only for the X850 line.

No one is saying that this Implementation ofCross fire is'nt horrible but if you look at the performance increase in certain games you will notice that its pretty good performance wise. I swear no matter how old some people are on these fourms life has taught them no lesson about reading into something, the Bigger picture. Crossfire Shows a large performance increase at Beta with relatively new drivers. Now think about it for a second. If Cross Fire on some half assed implementation can push some seirious frames then imagine on the X1800 how it would be? Im not defending Cross Fire for X800 cards even back in the day I didnt defend the notion of two outdated Cards in a Dual GPU Configuration. Just think about it, how much performance benefit did we get from SLi a year ago? we got about what, 50% in major games with lower marks for most others and even decreases for some games? While Cross Fire shows a majority of increase in most games and even beats its rival GPU (6800U Sli) in some games by a healthy margin or matches it in others. Thats just a sign of what we will see next with X1800XT Cross fire. so flame it while you can because I highlt doubt ATi will screw up their next Gen Cross Fire.

Launched a superior product in a shorter amount of time? What the hell are you smoking? They launched CrossFire a year after SLI and it SUCKS.

Yes a shorter amount of time. During the initial SLI preview's Nvidia said that a team had been working on SLI almost since they bought out 3DFX. They were literally hinting to YEARS of research. Needless to say this "hack" you proclaim crossfire to be, is actually going a hell of alot more smoothly then SLI's sad launch did.

And i honostly dont care how many ways you can try to justify the problems in CrossFire that you say shouldnt be there, and that i cant compare it to Nvidia's SLI launch. They have to launch it at some point, now here on the forums that means we can have the same half a dozen or so people bitching that ATI hasnt released anything, or that when they do release it, its now "crap". Heh, i mean theres no pleasing some people. Take it for what it is, which is a great first attempt and launching as a much more capable platform then what SLI was, not is. It can only improve in time, unless they start to develop drivers like Nvidia and breaking shit that was working  . To me this is a preview, look at how closely the R520 NDA drop is following, so they opted to send out current CrossFire packages to get its name rolling earlier, so what? How does that make it automatically trash? I think it shaped up pretty good in the amount of time they prepared it if Nvidia did infact spend years on their own. Get rid of that single output limit and go through some driver revisions and ATI will be in excellent shape. Hopefully by the R600 we'll be seeing native boards with much more improved crosscard relation.

I said it as soon as CrossFire was launched i was ashamed that ATI had to follow a design and i would of preferred a huge step up in a single robust GPU for them, or a return to MAXX era without the MAXX crap performance. So personally i dont care either way, i might try a board but im not going to slap down a grand for SLI or Crossfire. Im open minded, so please forgive me, i think that automatically makes me ATI bias because i dont choose to insult them. If their IQ and drivers go out the window i will start buying Nvidia again.

A couple of things...

the 6800U is not the competition for the x850xt...the 7800gt is...the x850xt is a refresh of r420, and g70 is a refresh of nv40...and we're going by price here...right now that pits the x850xt against the 7800gt...

CrossFire is NOT BETA...this is the final official full retail version...

I agree with you that it does in fact show a lot of potential with R520...but that's not the point right now...when R520 comes out, we'll all give CrossFire another look...and I expect we'll be quite pleased with it at that time...but that time has not come yet.

I voted Crossfire.

In a year this technology will be much more mature and people will have Crossfire motherboards to support the R520 when it is out.

This is very early tech still. You can't just say "Ew, it's slower and more expensive than a single 7800GTX". Think about the people who are stil on Socket A and Intel systems with AGP. When they upgrade, SLI would be just as expensive for them.

If the R520 doesn't hold some ground then this will be useless yes. Hopefully ATi works out all the issues with the drivers so they can start selling these. I know if I had the money I would buy one, because damn, I'm on a 6600GT, and Crossfire is faster and way sexier PCB :D

What? Of course 6800 is the competition for the x850. They've been the competitors for each other for some time now. To say otherwise is just dumb.
7800 HAS no competiton at the moment. Won't, until r520 is released.

The 60Hz limitation alone puts the CrossFire launch well beneath the quality of the SLI launch.

And I'm not the only one calling it a hack...every review site that's had CrossFire on their bench have alluded to the same situation...x850 CrossFire is a reactionary measure that was completely thrown together at the last minute...and as a direct result of that, it sucks...

I'm not going to argue with you anymore...the polls on these boards and the reviews on every site on the web speak for themselves...x850 CrossFire sucks...

I seem to remember the reviews of SLI being much more positive when it launched...

the x850xt is currently selling for $350...so is the 7800gt...

Tom's hardware...yea.

Here is Toms hardware on 7800GTX:

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20050622/images/image009.gif

To say I havent seen numbers this bad anywhere else would be an understatement.

It shows a single 7800GTX performing better than the crossfire (from the above post)

It also shows the 7800GTX SLI performing worse than the non-SLI in HL2.

Brings to question what drivers , what settings and who paid the check he is cashing...not to mention just a plain idiot doing the review.

Hate to say it but I think that bench is BS.

At a price point, yes, they are 'competition'. From a tech standpoint, no, you couldn't possibly be more wrong. Is a 60 year old car selling for 60 grand competition for a new car selling for 60 grand? No, in nothing other than PRICE.
You know, empty, sometimes your rabid f@nb0yism fades a bit, and you seem ok, but then you come out of left field with this kind of crap which puts any credibility you have right back at less than zero.
Simple answer : There is no competition currently available for the 7x00 series, other than price.
Is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130240 competition for the 7800? no. its also 350 dollars.
How about this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814106162 ? Nope, but it's 350 bucks too.
Few more 6800's and x800's in there too. Your logic is flawed, as usual, and your argument holds as much water as a sieve.

Those who would insist we evaluate xfire solely against the 6800U in order to be "fair" are on dangerous ground. All the benchmarks posted so far are of the X850 version of xfire. If we REALLY want to compare apples to apples, it's not "fair" to put the 6800U up against the X850, which was released some 10 months later. By this new "fair" standard, the 6800U should only be benchmarked against the X800 version of xfire, because the X800XT was the card contemporary to the 6800U.

But if I understand the offhanded remarks in some of the reviews I've read, the X800 version is still not available even in reference review form. I also get the impression that the reviewers are none too pleased by this, nor by the fact that the X850 cards still appear to be MIA in the retail channel. The implication is that, 6 months after the paper launch, this is STILL a paper launch. Now THAT's what I call a misfire.

Correct!!!! In a sence the 7800 has no competition at the moment. And I sure hope the r520 does end up being competition.

However, the x850 crossfire is NOT competition for the 6800. Don't lie to yourself. The crossfire came out AFTER the 7800 and not even priced right for that, there is no way in hell it can rightfully be called competition for such an old platform when the cost completely prohibits it from being a viable solution.

Wait a few more days, then we can revisit this whole conversation with a product that hopefully isn't a complete and total flop.
