cpu usage very high, slow performance with multitasking

I have a 3500 Venice, which should be a good cpu for multitasking. However, when I have several programs open, like kazaa, windows media player, internet explorer, the system really slows down. The cpu usage usually goes above 80%. I have 1gb of RAM so that shouldn't be a problem.

any suggesstions?

thanks

no, i have reinstalled windows 2 times in the past week and a half

my virtual memory is 1536mb. is that ok?

what the hell is using all that cpu? open task manager and see what app is sucking it up. I'm suspecting spyware. Ive had upwards of 20 windows open (wmp playing music, lots of ie windows, newsbin, aim, irc, bittorent windows, architectural desktop, etc) without a single hitch - all while letting folding@home run using any spare cpu cycles I have anyway. Unless kazaa has turned into serious bloatware, you shouldn't be seeing such high cpu use.

Kazaa? Isn't that spyware/adware/downloader-trojan software? That right there is probably hogging up your resources.

Wouldn't you normally be able to see which program was draining the most resources in the task manager? It could be one of them using an abnormal amount making it appear to be the combined effect that making all of them slower.

Well kazaa shouldn't be more than 5-7% for the D/Ling bandwidth/LAN use, WMP should maybe be 10-15% max. And unless you're on a flash site, I don't see anyway your CPU usage should be greater than 22%, 25% to account for the fudge factor.

well I just opened Kazaa and a few other sharing programs. It seems when I set my Maximum Simultaneous Downloads to unlimited in Kazaa, everything slows down. However, when I limit it to 10, the system runs fine and the cpu use is lower to about 50% or less. Maybe its the 80+ files searching for people?

Do you think that might be it?

Again, thank you all for all that help

I just uninstalled kazaa and every program relating to kazaa :D

I hope this will solve my problems. what do you recommend in place of kazaa?

Yeah, Kazaa is one of those programs that no one should be using anymore because it is filled with so much junk.

Reformat again, but this time leave Kazaa out of the installation loop.

Just FYI, just unistalling Kazaa may not solve all of your problems. A reformat/rollback may be required to rid yourself of all of the problems.

i uninstalled kazaa and programs relating to it. do i still need to format my hd?

i prefer not to because it would be the third time in a week and a half and its a huge hassle

edit:

rollback? like system restore?

it would be a good idea to reformat because all the spyware/adaware doesn't leave when u uninstall kazaa. as an alternative i would suggest bittorent and emule

can a spy remover fix this?

I really dont want to go through the hassle of putting back everything again for the third time in less than a week and a half. i may reformat if there is no other choice

im just wondering if I have a choice or not ... :p

You can try spybot search n destroy, or even better....pest patrol corporate edition....but really your best bet is to shutdown the computer, and reformat....kazaa is just rediculous spyware crap unless you get a recent underground hacked version. Download firefox and google toolbar..they help quite abit w/popups, and try a torrent program (bittorrent, azureus, etc) or mirc and a mp3 channel on undernet.

I would reformat and NEVER under any circumstance install Kazaa again. Nothing good comes from taht program.

well guys, I just reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows. So far, everything is running good and I will not install Kazaa from now on :D

thank you all :p

What do you guys feel about Ares?

It is much better than Kazaa?

I have used Ares in the past and liked it a lot. It uses very little system resources and is very quick and almost no spam. Do you all feel the same way?

What ever happened to doing it the leet way via XDCC? File sharing prog's are for llama's :)

If you love your Kazaa you can always get Kazaa Lite (or Kazaa Lite Resurrection)...hacked version that deletes all the spyware.

Even KLR has been hacked :( Bit torrent, bit tornado, and azureus are good clients. Search for torrent files at seedler.org, isohunt.com, and supernova.org....for all the latest episodes of your favorite tv shows you missed last night.

how is BitComet? or the original BitTorrent?

I just downloaded BitTornado, however when I try to download something, it says I am connected to 0 peers. What could be the problem?

I am using Isohunt.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate the help :D

Agreed, those 3 programs you mentionned can be handle by a last-last-last generation CPU. They don't take much CPU power to work well.

First thing about torrents be paitient.
When they first start up they'll be slow but they gain speed at a hell of a rate.
Second you need to configure your firewall.
If you're using a home router your best bet is turn on port forwarding for the ports your client uses(should be in the documentation) I think Bit Tornado uses 6888-6999
