ive got an older(2 year) gaming rig ive got laying around.....figured what the heck, lets see how much it would be to get a kinda cheap intel board/cpu(never owned one)....thinking a C2Q and board(DDR2 support).....dont need/want anything fancy other than a good OC board/Chip if possible.....not sure on a price limit, but nothing too expensive, this is just an idea that popped into my head(since i have 4 sticks of DDR2, a PSU, vid card, case, HDD, and DVD drive....)

any suggestions from the intel area?

Do you live anywhere near a Micro Center store?

If not, then I would not spend a single penny on such an outgoing older platform at this time. This is because all of the mail-order resellers charge way more money for the C2Q parts than they're worth - well over $200 just for the CPU (and then another $80 or so for the motherboard, putting the total to more than $300). At those prices I would rather sell off those DDR2 sticks and save up for an i3/i5/i7 platform (motherboard and CPU) with DDR3 memory.

Or just go with AMD and a socket AM2+ mobo if you really want to reuse the DDR2 RAM. In addition, many AM2+ mobos will soon have support for AMD"s six-core CPUs.

well

im curious on intel systems, i have an AM2 system for it now(an AMD Athlon 5000+ BE), currently run a Phenom II X2 550 BE on a Crosshair III(meaning the hexa core could go into my current one instead :p ) ..... i might have to see if my old board can support a low power Athlon II X4(only AM2 and not a very good one at that)....

and man i do wish i lived near a microcenter, unfortunatly im in FL, none of em that I know of

i do realize it is a "dying socket", but i have no issues buying used parts, so i guess a better question is, used what is the best combo of the two i can find?

That would have been my alternative suggestion (besides the one in my original reply).

Find a Q6600 for $125 and a mobo based on the Intel P45 chipset for around $60. Wouldn't be a total waste of money at that point. Remember those are used prices.

Yup, thought something was missing from your reply :)

Or you could not handy cap yourself and get an AM3 board that uses DDR2 memory. And then you would have more upgrade head room like AMD's Hexa-core CPUs.

or you can read the 2nd post i made, or look at my sig, and see that i already own an AM3 board, with DDR3, and already supports the hexa cores......meaning your post is useless

edit: Danny the 6600 was what I was thinking. Any specific stepping to look for? Also a P45 board will give me a good oc? And any suggestion on a good one to look for?

G0 stepping for the Q6600. P45 mobo wise, just find one by Asus, Abit or Gigabyte and you'll be fine. A P45 mobo will provide a good OC

I had a couple Asus P5Q Pro's and they were great boards. I could run the FSB at around 450mhz without making any extravagant changes to voltage or cooling.

K. I'll take a look. The roughly $200 sounds nice. Maybe I'll see if I can find a good gigabyte(only used Asus since I'm swapping one thing why not swap another)

which of these would be best?(i see some good, well decent, prices on some or atleast i think so)

Go with the Gigabyte. However, the price is a bit high.

kk, i wont be buying it now, just looking for ideas of what to do with my excess equiptment....since none of it was selling on the FS/FT area.
