CPU+GPU Driver Optimization

This is an analogy.

1. I buy a chair and put it in the kitchen.
2. Some claim this particular chair must be pin to the kitchen room
3. I am not allowed to move it out of the kitchen
4. Say I have a group of 30 friends coming in, the living room is short of sitting place, by the same claim, they should sit on the floor. I am not supposed to move the chair from kitchen into living room for temporary use.
5. In case I need to replace a failed Fluorescent lamp in another room and this chair happens to be able to assist as stepping support, I am also not allowed to use it, it must stay in the kitchen room.

It is not 100% similar, but Suggest

1. As long as the owner find it useful, the owner should be able to move the chair around for practical use.

2. The chair in the kitchen likely looks different then the chair in the living room. OK, to please, maybe should declare upfront clearly "this chair is from kitchen room"

3. For the owner, do you want to have a useful chair? Or do you want to have an idea that "this chair looks perfect inside kitchen room based on its fashionable design, and it will not go anywhere else"? and I am not going to allow you to step on this beautiful chair! ?

Declare Upfront clearly and let the owner decide ?

Well, it's likely ATi GPU drivers are developed on AMD machines, and merely compat. tested on Intel setups....

I have absolutely no clue what he is talking about. All I know is that yes the drivers are made on AMD machines, but x86 is a very standardized architecture and had little to no bearing on how the driver works...
 
Totally makes no sense, especially when AMD/ATI video cards are faster on intel cpus.

Greeting! Yep, that's the idea. 1st. in life we could be tied/married to many things, but in this particular incident, I hope we can see "married to a person" and "not married to the chair"!

You see, a chair will be useful to sit the guest. On this point, majority of people I feel kinda acceptable to the idea being practical.

OTOH, "this chair looks perfect here with its design and not movable elsewhere", this is not wrong to some who prefer to see the world as they see fit, but we probably could see that it is more of an "Opinion" rather than a "universally accepted practical idea"

Again greeting to you. Yes you are absolutely right a lot of people hate it when not relevant people upset the arrangement/things in the kitchen :)

We observe the traditions where we have to, and we make ourselves flexible in situation, as long as it does not violate "the right things that we know we should observe deep down", then for this particular instance with respect to the thread title, I suggest maybe acceptable?

Another example to close this post

1. I have a car that can sit total 4 persons
2. The trunk is full of stuff. I am the only person sitting inside the car.
3. Instead of saying, "ONLY human being can take the seat", I suppose I should be able to pile the grocery items on the empty seats, agree?

Hi, greeting! to clarify

1. I am trying to summarize many back and forth arguments frequently presented on this topic.
2. I am trying to say while the debates seem really interesting, sometimes full of technical terms, sometimes full of alternative insights, specialized analysis.
3. That sometimes perhaps bringing in real life examples will illuminate perspective closer to daily life, and that we live in daily life, not in the realim of TRON.
4. I am not saying who is right or wrong because it is obvious for this particular case you have a lot of choices.

5. I am suggesting as fusion begins, the line begins to blur
6. What good is a product that proclaim all kinds of suggestive things if the hardware cannot be used to its fullest potential
7. This obviously is difficult because it depends a lot on software
8. Utilize the hardware, adapt to the demands. If a CPU is somewhat idling while a GPU is working to its fullest potential, then offload the possible processing to the CPU. Sometimes the purists say cheating but what good is a situation where customer all praise a full satisfaction compliant product "to their standard" but always buy lowest-cost processor overclock or unlockable lucky items. There is nothing wrong but you cannot improve you ASP if you are perpectual in this condition.

9. The value and thus potential higher ASP will only come if the whole platform can deliver something where people see value in higher-end products, in this case, supposedly the incoming 6-core 8-core 10-core 12-core or more. "Whole Platform"

10. Repeat I understand the software part is not easy, therefore I am just suggesting.

Example Profiling ( A driver system that can utilize both GPU and CPU if necessary)
if core-count < 4
- std GPU
elseif core-count = 6 (activate additional)
- c0=system
- c1=potential CL/DirectCompute/Whatever custom processing
- C2-5=Game
else if core-count = 8 (activate additional)
- c0=system
- c1-3=potential CL/DirectCompute/Whatever custom processing
- C4-7=Game
there are too many possible variations to list. Example if known games are only dual-core optimized, implies you have a larger portion of CPU core for hybrid integration with GPU, decides at runtime.

It is not very easy to clearly describe the potential because I suppose software need a lot of works and benefits are not necessary obvious at this point , plus also ponder the need for such branch from standard GPU behavior in this challenging time.

Well as an old old BSD UNIX guy, I don't care where or what executes my job as long as it gets processed and preferably as quickly as possible, so I think I am with you. Having a usable resource sitting idle is silly.

or is it the shared FPU of Bulldozer thats the point ? Thank God not an integrated GPU yet, but its coming eventually.

I tend to want to agree with you. My real problem is while I know and understand uP down to he assembly code level and the basics of the archetecture, I dont have the same understanding of GPU coding/instruction set and so cannot hold a conversation about executing instructions intended for one on the other. But I hear ya.

Now that Bill has had his great revalation I too feel like an idiot. Valid point, OP, but unfortunately at this point there's no way (that I know of anyway) of running standard X86 code on a GPU, you have to write specifically for them. When and if that changes, we'll likely see a lot more about this.
