Counter-strike finally toppled

I know people are hurt because of what IW has done to the PC version, but from a business perspective how can you blame them..it looks like Xbox alone has 10X more "gamers" then the PC.

Ya its a pretty sad time when a console has more numbers on a FPS than PC does...

However, you also need to consider a lot of PC people didnt buy the game because of its problems(I sure didnt). So ya it has 10X more, cause the console version is the same crap they always have, and more console people purchased it.

I really dont understand why people like playing FPS games on console anyways. Such a terrible way to play a FPS.....

maybe because they dont care about competitive play and its more fun to them this way instead of spending 500+ in pc parts just to play it in a similar fashion....

Not hurt at all, it's a video game from a really shitty developer.

Sixty, you post alot, and all of your posts lose all of their credibility with posts like these. You cannot call the top game on the market atm absolute shit with shitty developers. Obviously they've figured out what the majority of gamers are looking for and have succeeded in creating it. Just saying. . you'd be better off saying "sure its a great game for the casual gamer, but its not for me, (list reasons here). . ." but if you want to keep with the absolute downer comments you'll convince nobody. . . meaning your talking to yourself.

and about the game. . . I find it extremely enjoyable to play but not competitively. . . My only criticism is why do they still not allow split screen system link? 8-10 of my buddies get together every weekend and we play system link games. . . but we usually only have 4-6 xboxs. . and it takes this game and all call of duty games out of play. :(

New Moon is the new top movie right now, better go watch it sheep.

Just wondering, what makes CS so good? (bear in mind I've only played a couple hours worth)

How high is CS normally? Halo, COD4 and WaW previous to MW2 had a few hundred thousand on at most times.

Also as for playing FPS games on a console.. It's pretty fun. I have never felt the urge to switch back to PC gaming(Did so for 10+ years previous to buying a 360).

Thats normal. CSS peaks at 94K at any given time and CS around 60-70k.

Ditto for me too- and we're talking 15+ years of upgrading video cards and cpus every 6-9 months. No more of that for now- I am having a blast playing FPS on a console. I am to the point I am now worse with a kb/mouse- I am so used to having all the buttons for throwing grenades, crouching, running etc easily accessible on a controller that I just can't do it on a keyboard. There is also something about lounging on your couch and feeling the thumping of 7.1 surround while playing on a 92 inch screen that is a bit more appealing too :)

Yea, according to xfire.com MW2 has demolished a lot of other games in play-time. Surprised MW1 is still so strong.

Oh ok. says Today. I was like umm in 5 years? I do have to concure with sixty. It says more people are playing Call of Duty 2 than CSS? doubtful.

It should be noted that all statistics posted in this thread are more then likely, very inaccurate. There is a lot of things not being taken into account.

Ya youre right. I didnt even notice COD2. I used to play COD2 a long time ago, and when I quit there were hardly any servers left..... How can cod2 have that many people still playing it...

I dont see how those stats can be accurate.

Id love to know where and how these stats were calculated lol.

You can't argue with Sixty about this. He is just a butt hurt emo kid who can't do anything but complain. You see he even called you a sheep, this is because he thinks he is the only one who can comprehend what si going on here and if you think differently from him on said matter than you're an idiot. Reminds me of this

Counter-strike source has been out for what, 5 years, orig CS has been out for 10? And only now, november of 2009 had anyone been able to knock it off its throne? Yeah that sounds pretty weak to me. I have quit two separate clans competing in CAL because I had to say to them, "yeah, im done with counterstrike, I'm sorry, Its has just gotten so repetitive that I need to hang em up," And even then, if I still want to play an online FPS with other people, and feel challenged doing so, I play counterstrike source. Its one of those games I see myself playing 50 years from now, unless valve does what is necessary and makes a sequel which is in every way better than CS:S and isn't "consoleized" and makes a sequel to it. BUT even if they don't, that won't matter, ill still be playing cs 1.6 and CS:S because I am physically addicted to it. Now, I won't play it every day, but when I need to get my FPS 'online compensation' fix on then counterstrike it will be, and chances are, you will find me playing it for 5-6 hours at a clip.

People who play counterstrike like me are a different breed, we are dedicated, we may not be on every single month, because sometimes it "gets old" but once that feeling wears off, our heart comes back EVERY time, because the game is pure, it doesn't care where you were born or if you are a terrorist or counter-terrorist by heart, all the game cares about is that you complete the objective, but even if you don't there will ALWAYS be next round, and the circle of counter-strike life will revolve as always.

Can you say to yourself that modern warefare (insert number) will do that for you? Can you say that you are that kind of dedicated to it like me and many hundreds of thousands if not millions of people are to CSS and cs1.6, to the point if thats the only game you can play for the rest of your life, 16 hours at a clip, than thats the game you want to be playing? because I can say that counterstrike is what I want to be playing. It is game i see passing down to my grandkids, teaching them about "the way of the world",

Give it time, even on the xbox, though the years, the one constant on top is counter-strike, so what if MW2 is more popular now, 'popular' things die off, but counter-strike is a ledend, and legends will never die.

The staying power of CS really does amaze me.

I've been playing cs for what seems like forever. I played 1.6 for a couple years and I've been playing source competitively for the last 5. It's still the best competitive game of it's type.

The source scene is pretty much dead but cspromod is right around the corner.

yes, this is what happens when you make a shitty PC title, more buy it for consoles.

Valve stated their games sell FAR FAR more on the PC than they do the console. Make a quality PC game and people will buy the shit out of it.

why are you going through hardware every 6-9 months?
seriously.

my current going rate is 3-4 years for a complete upgrade, maybe 1-2 for a single part.

I'm pretty sure he's a PC gamer and not a console gamer, so, uh, no? And the only people butt hurt are the ones who bought MW2 for the PC and got seriously raped paying top money for a gimped and awful direct console port ;)

And calling other people "kids", wow, what a display of maturity. What are you? 18 and think you're a big man?

Just because the masses eat shit everyday doesn't make it "fine" for us to be forced to do so. Anyone who can't see that is pretty dumb.

People exaggerate when they call it "shit." It is a good game. Singleplayer was fun and multiplayer is pretty good. I do have the PC version and am a PC gamer and don't feel "raped" by the price tag. I have been playing since Tribes and would prefer dedicated servers but it didn't happen this time and seems to me this will become more common as time goes by.

They could have made MW2 the greatest FPS ever with deciated server support, mods, etc... and it would still be dwarfed by console sales.

With that attitude it will be. Good devs will always use dedicated servers. It's better for everyone, period.

I couldn't even tell you why I keep coming back to it. Part of its the people. CS people are a different breed entirely. Sometimes I'll find a group of dead serious people who are competitive and we have a very 300esque scouts/knives only battle with the opposing team and other times I'll join a 20vs20 where my team is very dedicated to hiding in one spot in the map as a human pyramid and wait for the other team to find us stacked up like a lego turret barrage :). Regardless you just won't find the same fun bunch of people in CoD or any other game for that matter. Ring ring ring ring CoD phone! Does not exist.

Oh also loading the game and getting into a server takes EONS in CoD and Battlefield. On my machine. On a 20mb/3MB cable connection. No clue why. So if I don't like the 3 rd server I try to get into I just quit and play something else.CSS

As some one said the TF2 numbers sadden me but hey it's a great game with a great community doesn't have to be the biggest. I think people are looking at the MW situation all wrong. Seasoned PC gamers are constantly saying "I bet no one will be playing MW2 years from now!" and " It will never be as competitive as CS:S!" well sir you are right and it's just the way IW and Activision want it. COD franchise is like Madden they are now working on next falls release no need for a game to last 10 years. Mod's! Ha!! it is called DLC!! We make official maps and everyone pays don't like it don't buy it. IW hasn't tapped into what"the majority of PC gamers want" they have found what the majority of PC gamers will accept. Simple as that. This goes on in everyday human life why be different here. I'm quite sure those that decided to to get MW could have handled dedicated servers and the so called technical hurdle they provide to the average Joe. I'm also sure they could figure out a way to download and install the latest mods and maps. IW tapped into that ,despite what you think, the average Joe is not on some holy crusade to save PC gaming and have more important things to complain about. I see why folks like MW and COD in general the games are great games. But the feature missing in the PC version to me are bad for the community but good for Activision and IW.

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

As much as it pains me to accept it, it's real. Don't worry two weeks from now Counter-strike will be back at the top, but it's weird to see because in the 5 years I'm been a Steam subscriber this is the first time I've seen it happen. I guess at least in a way you can definitively say PC gaming is not dead. :)

*note these stats do not include playing in offline mode.

In six months MW2 will drop under CS:S. Move along people, nothing intersting to see here.

hahaha

Using the word the sheep angered you, mission accomplished.

The only one who sounds angry and bitter here is you.

I'm pretty sure he's a PC gamer and not a console gamer, so, uh, no? And the only people butt hurt are the ones who bought MW2 for the PC and got seriously raped paying top money for a gimped and awful direct console port

Pretty sure we're all pc gamers here considering this is the pc gaming section. Besides I'd like to consider myself one since I've been gaming on the PC since the C64 days and been playing CS since 1.0, which ironically is probably longer than some in here have been alive, but anyhoo.

MW2 is still a great game for whatever you may think of it. Will it be around in 10 years? Probably not since IW seems content to milk the franchise so like CoD4 it will probably die off when the next big CoD game hits the shelfs. It is a shame that developers do this and don't develop and mature a game the way Valve did Counter-Strike.

Look, I'm sure that many feel the same way about the game as you do, I know I'm disappointed at the lack of options we have over this game, but games are meant to be fun. I play games so I can log in and kill time with old college buddies and friends for an hour or two a night now. MW2 fits that bill so we play.

Seeing as how games are meant to be fun I don't get all pissed off when a game is released that doesn't fit my criteria. I skip it and keep playing what I'm playing or move onto another game I enjoy. The amount of pissing over this game is astounding, considering the majority who are so vehemtely oppossed to it haven't played it. That is fine, but what I don't get is why are you so pissed off over it. Is the Cod franchise so important and enduring to you that you have to treat this like a significant other breaking up with you that you don't want to so you're trying everything to get them to stay? I mean seriously, this perplexes me. I can't think of any game that has ever come out where I felt so diameterically opposed to it that I had to lambaste it every chance I got.

I'm pretty sure he's a PC gamer and not a console gamer, so, uh, no? And the only people butt hurt are the ones who bought MW2 for the PC and got seriously raped paying top money for a gimped and awful direct console port ;)

Most people who bought the game and have played it for themselves are enjoying it. Those who are unwilling to give it a chance are the ones who are whining and throwing tantrums like spoiled little brats :)

MW2 and CS* can not be compared. The only think they have in common is that they are FPS'. MW2 is a casual shooter for casual players. The fact that it cannot be played on a LAN with dedicated servers backs this up. It is not designed for competitive play. It's something to do on your couch. For me this places it in the same league as Peggles or whatever that stupid game is called.

My son wants it simply so he can play with his friends on XBox. When I get home I will probably buy it and play it with him. I won't be buying a copy for PC as I will have no use for it there. Had they made it possible to play on a LAN even with matchmaking I would probably give it a try. As it is, the game is just a toy in a toy box.

Notice that the CS* player numbers haven't dropped. Those players are still playing CS* and haven't switched. Competitive players recognize the game as a toy and aren't tempted.

All of these conversations in here just display the difference in player types. Many people treat games as toys. Something to play with for awhile and leave behind to do grown up stuff. Others treat games as a hobby, something to dedicate time to and to excel at - maybe even earn money at (competitions, tournaments, etc). MW2 fits squarely in the toy category.

That is my viewpoint anyway. Take it or leave it.
