1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming I really want to get out of this aging 775 system, and want to be able to play current and recent (This year) upcoming games with eye candy one.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included? $400-650 shipped

3) Where do you live? Wisconsin

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU/RAM/MOBO/ Maybe GPU

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Case/Hard Drive/Optical Drive/PSU: Thermal Take Toughpower 1200W/Video Card: GTX 260?


6) Will you be overclocking? Probably not, unless there'a serious price/performance gap I could hit with doing it.

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have? 22" 1680x1050. No other monitors, this PC will not be hooked up to another display with any kind of regularity.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Between now and the end of next month.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc. Stability and durability are my biggest things. Modern features like USB 3.0 and SATA 6 would be nice as well.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit? Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit

I'm willing to hold off on a GPU purchase for a while yet, as I'm sure my GTX 260 can hold it's own for the games I play now. But if there's nothing huge coming down the pipeline, I'm cool with getting something nice now too :D

But I desperately want to get new mobo/cpu/ram asap.

Can probably fit an i5-2500k + hd6950 unlocked setup (mobo ram) into that 600 usd. Just barely though.

I'd also recommend a 2x4GB kit instead of a 4x2GB kit. Less stress on the IMC for overclocking :)

yeah, I only realized that later :( Anyhow, check out the Mushkin RAM I recommended instead of the 4 corsair XMS sticks. Same clocks and timings, but less stress on the IMC for overclocking, too :p

At 200usd, you are probably staring at a HD6870, since even the GTX560 Ti is a bit out of reach with a hard limit... but the HD6870 is almost as fast as two GTX260x216 to begin with :)

EDIT: sandy bridge is a curb stomp. To counter it, AMD is launching Bulldozer in June/July. How it will perform? We don't really know, yet.
 
Grabbed an ASUS 6870.

651.96, 662.59 shipped. Doable :D I'll just have to suffer without some of my vices for a week, or slog through a rebate process.

oh, dear. I just wonder how mad Danny Bui is gonna be since I didn't ask him for his input on this :p

no problem :) The i5 2500k + HD6870 is a bit CPU overpowered (for most shooter games), however, it's still fine, IMO.

though at your res. You'll be well balanced :D

No problem at all. The more good hardware recommendation posts that people do, the less I have to post and therefore more time for me to moderate and play games :)
