Console Games Taking Over PC Games

Call me when the setup to play all of that is less than $2000. Where a PS3 and a laptop or desktop with decent specs allow folks to do picture stuff surf the internet and play movies and doesn't sound like it's about to take off and can all be had under $1000 even $800. See that is your hobby 99 percent of the public think you're an idiot for spending that kind of coin on your rig. Fact of the matter is consoles are popular because most people look at games as a past time. They may be into you know other stuff like photography classical music skydiving and like to play games as a past time and don't want to re finance their house to play Crysis maxed out at 2560x1600. That is the majority live with it. And guess what they actually buy games. Surprise!!!! Why can't they be catered to also? Most people don't want to tweak their PC's to squeeze those last frames of performance they want a console that looks great on their HDTV and offers a wide variety of games and features. I see nothing wrong with that.

lol? 2000? I build my rig for only 1000 USD around.....

where you got that number from? and what kind of machine is that?

and dont think only console people buy games, I am seeing more people pirate console game than PC since PS1....just surf around google you will find crap load of console game download....

also, Console looks extremely lagging for me compare to PC, and most people do feel that way...

if you want to talk about price, look how much a console game cost, 69? while PC is like 40-50 keep adding it up you will see you are actually paying more money on console than PC :p include all other DLC while PC is for free......

"Call me when consoles can play it at 2560x1600 resolution like my Dell 3007WFP-HC does at high (60-70+) FPS and high-quality sound cards work with them too. Also of course they need to have super-high-res textures to make it look good and high-end shader/particle effects. Oh, and please make sure they run that with games like Company of Heroes, World In Conflict, Warhammer Online, Crysis Warhead, heck even Mirror's Edge with those kinds of settings & PhysX, etc."

I was responding to the above in bold. If you can build a rig that can do that at that resolution on that monitor and spend $1000 dollars please list the parts and note the time it would take to build it too. I'm building an i7 rig with a gtx285 for just under $1000 and couldn't get those frame rates at that resolution. Also any gamer worth his salt doesn't pay 60 bucks for console games. Usually you can find these games on-line for 50 bucks the first week or so. I'm not defending consoles but they are starting to implement features that were exclusive to PC's at a reasonable cost to the buyer.

My issue with consoles are the games are extremely shallow and catered to your common idiot. I can tolerate the graphics on consoles, but when I crave depth and complexity in my game play the PC is usually the only place I can get that at.

You're comparing apples to caviar. No console is going to do all of that. And when talking about a game like Crysis Warhead that would melt any console and a ton of otherwise capable PC's, now you're in another league.

Sure console can do a lot of PC stuff these days. I can see the day that consoles are all the computer a lot of people need, that said, PC's are general purpose devices and consoles probably will never quite get there because of there closed nature.

Consoles are great. They make gaming pretty affordable for millions. High-end PC are just in another league that's all. Technology may close the gap between PC's and consoles but only so much. A contemporary $4000 PC vs a $400 console is just no contest. That's always going to be the case.

I can tolerate the graphics on consoles

I can't. At HD resolutions and above consoles blow chunks when games scale well. Next gen consoles will close this gap, but then we'll have the next gen resolutions and so forth and the cycle repeats.

this is awful. what wasted bits and bandwidth... consoles and pc gaming will both die. why? because once all the major developers realize the ENTIRE lot of drm problems they face can be solved with cloud computing ITS OVER.

as shown in the news section- console and pc gaming will be replaced by a box the size of your remote control, and all it does is connect you to the game's centralized server where you get online activation every time you play. it will be like a console but with pc power, and most people that bitch about it now will love it once they realize every new game can be played at the highest pc level quality settings- with zero cost in upgrades. the only people that will have a right to bitch will be people like me, and many on this forum- the pc hobbiest. the gaming enthusiasts. the guys that play with pc's like lego's (they already crippled our tv viewing capabilities on pc's, i can totally see them going all cloud-computing on our games now...)

GTX 295 or 4870X2 is enough for that resolution without AA and run quite smooth in Crysis...

if you want even more, GTX 280 Tri-SLI would be a better choice..

and no i7 rig please, i7 is not mean for gaming and it will not help much...

some bench even show lower framerate at higher resolution than Q6600-Q9550

E8400 OC or any Quado beside shitty one OC up to 3.6G is all you need..

RAM you can stack any DDR2 up to 8G with like 50 bucks around....

the rest it really depend on what you like..

overall, PC gaming is quite cheap than what you think..

Okay, so you don't like DRM but you like this setup? Plus you are talking some serious technology to do this on a server. Plus what kind of bandwidth would you need at the house? Plus I like to play some games on my laptop disconnected.

But I do believe that you have a point. There'll be more network hooks into games to make copying more difficult. But there's you DRM again.

Sure this is all theoretical and yes PC gaming isn't going to die. But without games helping to drive PC hardware, sure we'd have PC hardware, but its hard imagine that not having games on the PC wouldn't effect hardware sales at the higher end of the spectrum. Games help push higher end hardware and more profitable hardware than the crap that's in most PC's.

Would you get rid of your PC if gaming died? I wouldn't. I guess there are some people who have multiple pc's, but I'd assume that's a very small percentage.

Your missing the point.... why should game companies incure the cost of programming for new technology when all they need to do is use the out dated engines that are supported by the consoles.

New PC technology is what is driving all of the advancements in gaming.

Blasphemy. Games that came out in the last year of the SNES's lifespan look better than games that came out the first year. Games that came out in the last year of the PS2's lifespan look better than the games that came out in the first year. Games that came out for the xbox360 in the last year of its lifespan look better than games that came out in the first year. ETC ETC ETC

wow, wrote this for another thread but it fits this one as well.

Its because of cross platform development we aren't seeing significant advancement in developers pushing the boundaries of PC hardware. It's a damn shame and one reason I'm not a fan of consoles. They have stifled creativity and advancement in gaming. Also the reason a lot of games are weak because console gamers don't require as much to entertain them. They have also practically destroyed the simulation genre. Plus the usual game being nerfed because of a game pad. Who wouldn't want a new Mechwarrior or Tie Fighter/X Wing?

Personally I'm hoping there are more upstart developers willing to take a chance on exclusive PC games.

As far as your question I think 2011 is the time frame. I won't be buying any consoles though. I've bought every console over the past 10 years and with each release they bore more and more. I'm not wasting my money on them anymore.

Exactly... and to those saying graphics don't matter... why are you not playing on the NES still and developers aren't making tons of games for it still? Beefier hardware opens up more gaming possibilities (you aren't pulling off physics with 3D real-time-strategy worlds or MMO's on an NES!), which the PC can take full advantage of.

Fact is, developers are often holding back because they want to be able to port to/from a console, thus we don't see the full extent of what a PC could do with proper support like PhysX hardware/GPU, and multicore-CPU's with beefy GPU's. When they DO try to make something that uses it, everyone complains that their hardware can't run it (see: Crysis release).

A good gaming PC that will still blow away a console graphically (as well as work well for RTS/MMORPG/RPG in general) doesn't really run that much nowadays compared to some console setups..

Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ $200ish
8800GTS/9800GT @ $100ish
8GB DDR2 RAM @ $70ish

Optical drive (DVD burner) @ $20ish
USB Keyboard/optical mouse: $20ish

Total: $655ish

Considering a 160GB PS3 goes for $500ish in bundles with one game, that's not much, AND the PC can do all the other stuff PC's do such as media center apps, desktop work, CAD/Rendering, encoding, etc. etc., so with that factored in it's not that big a leap. Obviously you could go cheaper by finding hot deals or going to a dual core instead of a quad, a smaller hard drive, etc. etc., and it'll still blow the console out of the water while doing everything else. No, you can't count a monitor as part of the deal... because you can't run a console without a TV, so display is a shared cost for an HDTV to show off a 360 or PS3 with.

Imagine what a PC developer could do if they could count on that kind of hardware as minimum specs... compared to a console with probably 1/4 the overall power if that.

Sure you can. See above and swap the video card for a GTX 280 or 295 ;). Another option if you got a half-decent PSU is $400 for a 2x GTX 260 Core 216 SLI setup which will run beautifully, still under $1k on that example rig.

Reason why there are fewer games for PC?
Piracy.

lol...trolling..

console have way more piracy since old days.....

and PC is moving toward to MMO games, just look how many MMO out there right now...

compare to console game number...you will see something funny there :p

How am I trolling? I just said there are less games being made for PC because of piracy. I like PC gaming, but I'm stating FACTS. Here's a quote from http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ubisoft-pc-piracy-cannibalising-console-sales :

Ubisoft Shanghai's creative director Michael de Plater has said that piracy is killing the PC gaming market.

The reason the studio's latest title, Tom Clancy's EndWar, isn't being released for the PC on the same day as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions is because users will steal the pirated PC copy, rather than pay for a console version, according to de Plater.

"To be honest, if PC wasn't pirated to hell and back, there'd probably be a PC version coming out the same day as the other two," he told VG247.

"But at the moment, if you release the PC version, essentially what you're doing is letting people have a free version that they rip off instead of a purchased version. Piracy's basically killing PC."

"You know, the level of piracy that you get with the PC just cannibalises the others, because people just steal that version," he said.

Man, you are so cool and definitely much better of a person than 'your common idiot'. Your ultimate fuckawesome video gaming skill set makes your opinion and taste better than anyone else. Super awesome job being so badass!

Get real. I have a gaming PC, but also own consoles and handhelds as well. You are an ignorant, elitist goon and are insulting anyone here at [H]ardforum who owns a console. /pitchfork

Gamers are gamers, and the market is shifting. I know just as many girls that own consoles these days, and probably more who use handhelds. The Wii and its market is here now, and even HD consoles are the wave of the future. Why on earth would the average gamer want to have to learn how to build a gaming PC when they can walk into Best Buy and buy a 360/PS3 for a few hundred space bucks, and play an arsenal of games? Or why would a seasoned 20+ year gamer like myself want to waste time/money on building yet another gaming pc when I can do the same?

Do you think that developers hold your elitist attitude in high regard? Do you think they care more about pleasing your minority taste buds when there are countless more consumers standing in the other direction, money in hand and ready to enjoy what they get?

Do you think?

You are very rude. What's your problem? How am I trolling? Do you even know what that means?

Here is the the definition of trolling so that you don't misuse it in the future:
An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]

You act like I'm attacking PC gamers. I'm not. I'm stating facts and you got hurt by it. I love playing PC games and console games. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. A weakness of PC games is that the game industry realizes that it's too easy to pirate games for the PC, so they rather develop games for consoles. Consoles aren't 100% pirate free but it is definitely more difficult to pirate games for it, thus more profitable, thus why there is fewer games developed for the PC. FACT.

If you release the same game for PC and console, PC sales will always be fewer than cosoles because it's easier to pirate games on the PC. COD4 is a good example of this. Do you have facts to back up that consoles today have MORE piracy than PC for the SAME game? Show me "the console game number" you speak of. You don't have it.

And we all already know that you can find ANY game whether it be PC or console at a bittorrent site. If you search for the same game for the PC and console you will see that the PC has more seeds than the console version.

Grow up and stop being immature by attacking people from behind a computer screen. Anybody can attack someone from the safety of the internet, but it takes a man to show maturity at all times. And while you're at it, learn to do some research about console vs. PC piracy.

I am contributing to this post and giving insight to the OP by stating why console games are taking over PC games, while you are blindly attacking others with out any basis for your claims. If you ask me, you are the troll.

Here are more facts just for you and until you give me real numbers I suggest you stop embrassing yourself:

Cevat Yerli of Crytek, the makers of Far Cry, Crysis and Crysis Warhead has publicly stated:
We are suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis. We seem to lead the charts in piracy by a large margin, a chart leading that is not desirable. I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy, to the degree [that PC gamers who] pirate games inherently destroy the platform. Similar games on consoles sell factors of 4-5 more. It was a big lesson for us and I believe we won’t have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future.

John Carmack, often called the 'father of PC gaming', and co-founder of id software, makers of the Doom and Quake series, recently stated:
It's hard to second guess exactly what the reasons are. You can say piracy. You can say user migration, but the ground truth is just that the sales numbers on the PC are not what they used to be and are not what they are on the consoles.

Cliffy B, lead creator at Epic Games, makers of the Unreal Tournament and Gears of Wars series, has been quite outspoken on this topic:
Here's the problem right now; the person who is savvy enough to want to have a good PC to upgrade their video card, is a person who is savvy enough to know bit torrent to know all the elements so they can pirate software. Therefore, high-end videogames are suffering very much on the PC. Right now, it makes sense for us to focus on Xbox 360 for a number of reasons. Not least PCs with multiple configurations and piracy.

Chris Taylor of Gas Powered Games, makers of Supreme Commander, also chimes in with his assessment:
...people are going to stop making [games] on the PC because of my earlier point, what's happened on the PC with piracy. The economics are ugly right now on the PC. You're not going to see these gigantic, epic investments of dollars on the PC when it just doesn't work. The economics have to work. You're going to see those investments made on the console side and it's going to become a more console-centric investment. And then you're going to see them ported back over to the PC and that creates a different experience on the PC.

Robert Bowling, Community Manager at Infinity Ward, the makers of games such as Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4, provided a fairly blunt opinion on the issue. He made a blog post entitled 'They Wonder Why People Don’t Make PC Games Any More', the title of his post along with the contents clearly linking the move away from PC game development with piracy:
On another PC related note, we pulled some disturbing numbers this past week about the amount of PC players currently playing Multiplayer (which was fantastic). What wasn’t fantastic was the percentage of those numbers who were playing on stolen copies of the game on stolen / cracked CD keys of pirated copies (and that was only people playing online).... the amount of people who pirate PC games is astounding.

Now tell me that these guys release "shitty games".

So this thread is all about launching personal attacks against console gamers in order to justify the cost of our PCs? .. why not stop being a fanboy and enjoy games on both the console and PC.
/yawn
Starting threads like this, should result in a ban.

This is stupid for several important reasons.

Piracy exists on consoles, if someones goal is set in stone to aquire the game without cost, they will do one of 2 things, they will either wait for the PC release, or they will pirate the console version.

Theres also the distinct possibility that the PC version will be leaked before it's intended release date, leaks from stores are incredibly common which usually give the game a few days headstart on the official release date.

Leaks from other places such as the publishers or developers or someone who managed to get an early copy are also relatively frequent, if something is complete and being held back artificially, theres pretty good chance it will get leaked...this tends to scale with the anticipation of the game so if no one really cares it probably wont happen, but with big name titles its almost a certainty that something will be leaked.

First of all. most people who game on a console dont have a pc capable for gaming so even if the game came out same time on the pc, they can only get it for there console

I love it we went from playing games such as World in Conflict, Crysis Warhead, and Company of Heroes at 70 fps with all graphical enhancements on to a budget rig. Excellent! And you will need at least need a GTX295 maybe 2 to run at that resolution at those FPS. So lets just say I'm right and you need a GTX295 well that makes it $1055ish. And these folks that you all think are idiots now have to put it together which is time and a certain amount of Knowledge. Also unless I still don't know what I'm talking about most of those steam surveys reveal that the system you priced out isn't even the average system for a PC gamer. My point is that a great gaming experience can be had with a PS3/XBOX360 along with a reasonably priced Laptop/Desktop for less than a gaming PC and certainly less effort. I mean I'm not touting PC gaming is Dead ( TF2, Total Wars series, WOW, ArmA, MODs galore) it's a great platform. But to not give console gaming it's due is flat out cultist behavior. It has it's place with 99 percent of the population and it's dollars are driving the market. And yes you can spend less and have a PC that can perform on the level of the PS3/XBOX360 at (720p) but in reality not many people are interested in building that machine (enthusiast or mainstream gamer).

You are very rude. What's your problem? How am I trolling? Do you even know what that means?

Here is the the definition of trolling so that you don't misuse it in the future:
