Considering overclocking i7-930 for first time

I've run a PC with an i7-930 for about two years now. I've built this, and many a PC but never overclocked. Everything is stock cooling except for arctic silver thermal paste on CPU when I assembled it. Considering trying to get it over the 3GHZ barrier. Is it feasible to raise this CPU's speed with the current cooling? Is it worth even to try? Suggestions, comments, thank you.
 
3GHz is a very minor bump for a 930. Using the stock cooler I would expect any 930(even a really crappy one) to hit 3GHz with no voltage increase.

You could also spend a few bucks on a better cooler and shoot for 3.8-4GHz. The Cogage True Spirit is a great option for good performance at a low pricepoint.
 
As with most O/C adventures, look at what your temps are telling you...
 
so long as you don't bump the voltage up it will be just fine, if you do want to bump the voltage for more speed i'd suggest getting better cooling, though you can run a slight voltage increase on a stock heatsink if you watch your temps closely, but with summer nearly upon us i wouldn't.
 
Stock intel cooling should be good for ~3.2Ghz at stock voltage. Get a better cooler and you should be able to hit 4Ghz.
 
Others are correct.. you can run a slight overclock on the stock cooler.. BUT, it will run hot. Even at stock speeds it will run hot under full load.

Yay for a cooler design that intel has been using for around 10 years. A very poor design to begin with.. the fins are way to thick to disspate heat very well.. and the heat that does get dissipated gets blown right back down at the CPU socket and surrounding components.
 
You can pick up like a $20 air cooler and probably hit 3.5+ GHz easy.
 
Thank you for these replies. I am slow getting around to it, but I look to get a decent little cooling enhancement for the cpu. Might as well. Im running an HAF case so I feel good there.
 
So, I've tinkered with this overclocking activity now on and off during the last weeks. I feel more comfortable with it than I did when I started. PC has been running most everything I send at it pretty well. I don't always leave it OC'd though due to cooling. Its not outrageously hot, but, I'm at the point where I'll feel better with a little better cooling to the CPU.


Luckily, my HAF case allows me access to the bottom of the motherboard so I do not have to remove it to add a different cooling option.

I'll start researching, but any recommendations for a quality, fairly priced CPU cooling option for a 930 running in the neighborhood of 3.5 (or less) please do share.

Ive been running a 950 under water for 2 years. id prob get better then 4.1 ghz if it was a better batch or maybe a 920 with a good batch. but i had to turn up volts to 1.38 to get stable and it does get hot still. Stock volts should let u get to 3.5-3.8 with decent air cooling. i forget the max temps u shouldnt go over but if u stay under 70c i think ur fine since i hit those temps benching sometimes. idle i get between 42-45c. I would also see how stable u are and ur temps with a voltage of 1.3v gl
 
I'm happy with the performance of my Zalman and I see its $27 after rebate on Newegg. That's one option for you but there are a number of good coolers out there.
 
I have a Scythe mugen 2 rev. B on my i7-860 (I know, different socket...) But that CPU has been at 4.0 for 2.5+ years now, and I have had zero problems. It works almost as well as my H50 does, actually. I will check the idles temps and load temps later, as I have changed cases several times, and it currently has SLI GTX 280's in it :)
 
Phew! Been busy, in a final semester of a college experience here and just ordering parts. I picked up the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus.
 
That's a great little cooler. Is it the best one out there? No, but it will work fine. Like others have said, just keep an eye on the temps. I like to keep my 920 below 70c, this is on a custom WC loop and at 4.2ghz. The old i7 do run a bit hotter than the newer ones.
