Concord (PVP multiplayer FPS)

One shouldn't laugh of other people losing their jobs, but this was pretty funny. 😀

I read a designers criticism of Concord, and I think he had a very good point saying that it wasn't neccessarily the uglyness of the characters, but the fact that the different classes doesn't look like what they are supposed to be, design wise. So players wouldn't know which character was a gunner, medic, and so on, because there was very little to tell them apart.

I'll laugh at them considering one of the devs called anyone critical of it "talentless freaks". In fact, I hope they never find another job in game development again.

I'm sure the game had plenty of bad gameplay designs, but bad gameplay doesn't matter if no one plays the game to begin with. And people didn't play it because the characters were ugly.

It's a hero shooter with bad hero design. Bad decisions ran deep in that company. Sony made the right call shutting down the company.
Sure, there is usually more than one cause for a problem.

Those are all valid points. However, you can't monetize a game with skins and other cosmetic items when one of the characters looks like Fat Albert and Doom Guy had butt sex and it somehow produced this:

As others have said. A hero shooter lives and dies by the look and design of its characters. On multiple levels Concord is a master class in how NOT to design characters for a game.

Reddit is still Alive with the game I actually wish the game was still around I never tried it someone said it was buttery smooth.
It's not surprising that people still talk about it. Concord is not just the biggest failure in gaming history but one of the largest flops in entertainment media. The whole saga of how that pile of shit came to be and all the mistakes along the way to its utter and dismal debut is a fascinating tale of hubris, mismanagement and ineptitude. It highlights the dangers of trend chasing when games have such a long development cycle.

Their biggest flaw or maybe fear was letting too many people try the beta/demo weekends. They would pay streamers to show it off but not make it easy to play yourself. I think the first round you had to pre-order it to play.

The gameplay looked decent. I honestly think it would have done okay if the characters didn't look like if you hit random on Oblivion character creation. Or maybe if they had gone F2P from the start.

The game failed for a number of reasons. The first of which is that it was about 8 years late to the party. The $40 price of admission was a hard pill to swallow given that every other hero shooter was free to play by that point. Furthermore, the graphics weren't horrible, but dated given the long development style. The whole idea that weekly cut scenes were going to be the "hook" that kept players coming back was just a stupid idea to begin with as that's not generally what drives payers to play games like this. It was especially ridiculous given that the characters weren't really likable and came off as a Temu version of Guardians of the Galaxy. After watching the initial trailers and cutscenes, the "story" wasn't engaging to begin with.

The F2P model wouldn't have helped as it would have been virtually impossible to sell cosmetics for characters that looked like that. Sexy skins and cool looking skins are what sells. For that to work, you need good looking characters. Androgynous soy boys and females that look more like Dog the Bounty Hunter aren't characters people want to play dress up with. You can't take Eve's outfits from Stellar Blade or the outfits from The First Descendant characters and put them on Daw or Fat Alberta and get a result that anyone wants to pay money for. Not only that but the game had no cash shop or that type of monetization built-into it anyway, meaning all that would have cost money to create. The gameplay seemed decent on a basic level, but the TTK on other players seemed like it was measured in minutes instead of seconds. It was absurdly long. Otherwise, the game play/weapons and character didn't seem to offer anything we hadn't seen done as well or better in other games.

Ultimately Firewalk Studios was completely mismanaged and over-valued to begin with. The result was something like half a billion dollars spent over 8 years to create a game that was nothing more than mediocre in all aspects of its design. The one thing the game is ultimately going to be remembered for is having the ugliest character roster in gaming history combined with being the largest commercial failure to date.

It was definitely late to the game, but Marvel Rivals proved there is still a market for hero shooters.

Totally agree with everything you said though. The biggest issue is the heroes look like redditors, and the next is not being F2P. Marvel Rivals has sex appeal and is F2P. If Concord had that people would have at least tried it and they could adjust the gameplay and salvage the game even though they might not turn a profit.

Most definitely. The problem is that mediocre doesn't cut it in a saturated market. Marvel Rivals did everything Concord failed to do and that's why it flourishes.

Rivals looks interesting but the general color pallet looks washed out and graphics looked pretty dated to me.. but people do seem to love it and it's f2p.

Like a lot of these hero shooters, the graphics are overly cartoony and stylized so that the game can run on a potato. This way, devs can milk more players in different income brackets for that sweet, sweet microtransaction money.

The Graphics are done that way to attract kids then they become old before you know it. Either that or Readability when aiming downsight.

The graphics are that's way because Blizzard made Overwatch like that, and suits are convinced this is what people want. It's why nearly every MMO that was tried after WOW looked like WOW.

That's all about trend chasing and copying what has proven successful before. Things that have worked before seem like a safe bet to investor types.
