Computerfreezes when accessesing harddrive

Hello,
I recently upgraded my computer (CPU, MOBO, RAM and VGA) and kept my old hard drives which were working. I am also reusing my power supply which was working in the previous setup as well.

When i try to boot the computer it would freeze when i windows was attempting to load. Sometimes windows loads but then eventually freezes.

When i boot the computer it says "no harddrive is detected!" or something along those lines however when i look in the BIOS it is definitely reading it.

I tried to reformat as as soon as i get to the "expanding windows files" or what ever it freezes. One time i got up to 14% before freezing... but it's unavoidable.

I even attempted to use another harddrive and got the same problems.

Could some one help me out, please? I feel like it is some BIOS problem but i cant find anything that could be related... i am out of ideas, anyone able to help me?
 
Power problems? Old PSU may have been up to it's old job, but not so good at it's new job. Voltage dropping due to high cpu load, things go wrong. Just a theory.
 
Yeah i tried different cables.

I did some problem isolation and i no longer believe this has anything to do with the harddrive. If i remove the videocard and run off the onboard video i can load windows just fine.

I've tried other videocards and have the same issue so i am quite sure the problem is either the motherboard or some sort of setting option in the bios. The computer works just fine if i run it with onboard video however as soon as i plug a videocard in i can no longer load into windows.

I requested an RMAed on my board but i feel like it's not really the issue... anyone have any other ideas of possible issues? I also decided to purchase a new power supply but i don't think that is the problem either.

This thread probably shouldn't be in the data storage forum anymore but i'm not quite sure where it belongs.
 
Or a power problem like I mentioned above. Adding the video card puts substantial additional load on the power supply. Why do you not think this could be the problem?
 
I tested the video card in my old setup with the same power supply and it worked fine for the days i used it in BF3. I used it for about a week before buying new parts.
 
But the combined load of your new MB, CPU and that card is what's causing the problem. The fact that it worked in the old setup isn't really all that meaningful. That kind of flakiness is almost always either power or cooling.
 
I always keep one or two spare cheap ($50ish) power supplies (Corsair builders PSU, 500 watt, or a cheap OCZ 500 watt) around. I learned that my troubleshooting time is worth way more than the $50.

For me, PSUs usually fail first before anything else - power is often messy and dirty. They are also the easiest to swap out for quick tests. Also the easiest component to eliminate from the equation when things start going wrong.
 
The only change is really the Core 2 Duo E6750 OCed to 3.4 GHz to a stock i5 2500k. Does that really require a new power supply? That is pretty much the only change... Also my new power supply i bought is the same wattage so i might be screwed. Oh well, I'll find out tomorrow when i get my parts. If it still doesn't work I'll try borrow my friends 750w.
 
Eh... i got a replacement motherboard and power supply and i am still having the same issue... Anyone have any ideas? i feel like it's BIOS related... if not the only thing i haven't replace is the ram and CPU.

Here are my specs if they help:
i5 2500k
MSI G3 Z68A-GD65
4x4GB Corsair Vengence 1600MHz
XFX Radeon HD 6950 2GB
150GB Raptor + 2TB
Corsair HX650W

And to clarify... I can boot into windows when i use the on-board video but as soon as i use a video card it freezes when windows begins to load.

Well... you seem to be correct. I just assumed that since windows loaded fine with 4 sticks installed with out a video card that the ram was working fine. Apparently a stick is faulty and i have sent in an RMA request, thanks.
