1) I want to play Diablo III on max settings... that is all this computer will be for.

4) I have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor... I need everything else including computer case.

I saw the Alienware computers that are meant to hook up to a TV. What are opinions on those for Diablo III? Or could I build something similar?

21" and "really high" max resolution are contradictory. 21" at most would be 1680x1050.

Your last statement implies you would like to hook it up to your TV. Is this true?

You may have ergonomic issues using a Keyboard &mouse on the couch. Of course D3 may have xbox 360 controller support from the start.

Oh, and there's no need to overclock for D3.

Honestly you are just fine with a DIY kit from newegg. That is the route I took to start building my current rig, then I added parts as I could afford them. Now I own a great rig that can play any game.

So basically, just get a kit like this:

If I had to build it from scratch I would just go to newegg and go with:

Asus / LG / Lite-on CD/DVD burner,
GTX 570 or 560 ti or even 560 would work for D3
Plus some decent RAM (G.Skill / Corsair / Geil, IMO) 4GB would be plenty. I tend to put at least 8gb in my rigs, but I keep music and browser open while I game...
Neo Eco above is a good PSU, but I tend to go with Corsair / Silverstone / Coolermaster / Seasonic. Sesonic is usually a great PSU and I can update this post after work.

I'll edit this post with my suggested build, should be a bit better than a HD 6950 - which is overkill IMO. If you are hooking up to a TV it's best you get a good graphics card with plenty of good outputs - I prefer nVidia only because I tried the Catalyst Control panel from AMD for their graphics and it didn't really give me a crisp image even after tweaking it... could have been just me...
 
Those Newegg kits typically include a couple terrible items and often shipping costs which make them bad value. For instance, the first uses a AMD 6100 CPU and overpriced case while the 2nd has a RAIDMAX PSU and 5900 RPM HD.


You are much better off NOT using a Newegg kit.
 
The idea of hooking the computer up to my TV sounds great, but I imagine I will use this computer a few different ways. I have a monitor and project recording studio with some great studio monitors which makes a great setup for playing the game. I also like the idea of potentially hooking it up to my TV. Third, it would be great if it was portable enough to take to my brothers house for teaming up here and there. This is why the newer and smaller Alienware I saw sounded cool... but I'm not set on it.
 
The Microcenter over on Metcalf has a bunch of bundles on sale that they don't have listed on the site. Either in Intel or AMD flavor depending on budget.

I honestly haven't found D3 to be all that demanding on a system.
 
It isn't demanding compared to many other modern games, but I can't max the settings on my 2010 Macbook Pro. It's playable, but I would like to get everything out of the game that I can.

Maybe Fry's, especially if your store will price match for you? I really don't know what you have available but I have heard that CA taxes suck so maybe something online like Amazon. We have a lot of forum members from CA so maybe they could better answer you.

There's a Fry's out in Emeryville if you don't mind the drive... you could probably actually get a decent deal on the parts you need.

I didn't say all of the newegg combos are good, there are some that are better than others. They enable you to have a cheap starting point and sell the parts you don't want and build around it. No where did I say I recommend it, but that it's an option to look at.

However, when I bought my combo - I took a different route. I used the integrated video to play Starcraft 2 until I could afford an HD 6850. From there I bought a new mobo. The combo came with a Phenom II x6 1055T Thuban. I was then with the new mobo and CPU cooler I bought, OC it to a fast 3.6-3.8ghz stable. I was basically able to squeeze another GHZ out of my CPU with very little investment on my part.

So basically within a year I had a great upgrade path, and all I upgraded was my mobo and GPU. I bought one of those CPU / RAM / Mobo combos. The 3-4 part combos from newegg are not a bad value especially if he just needs to run Diablo 3.

If you're looking at spending $750, here's what I'd do (since you made it sound like I didn't know what I am talking about when it comes to building computers):

Did you mean GTX 560 TI? The link and the name points towards to the rather poor GTX 550 TI card.

Not really a good choice since it's a mid-range Sirfa built model. Its quality is similar to the mediocre OCZ ModXStream Pro 650W.

Crucial M4 128GB SSD one of the most recommended. $125 at Amazon or Newegg. If you drop down to an i3 cpu budget build you can probably fit one in and stay under $750 total.

Anyways, I pointed to the 550 ti because he's only playing D3 on a 21" monitor, he can upgrade the card later or go for a non Ivy Bridge or find a mobo/cpu combo and get the 6950 for $200 today (that's a hard deal to beat.)

64GB would be enough if you're diligent about not installing or downloading to the SSD too much. However the Crucial M4 64GB isn't that good of a buy since it's still $90. The 128GB costs $125 right now. So from a price to performance ratio, the Crucial M4 128GB is the better choice.

You listed the price of $209 AR which made me think you were thinking of the GTX 560 Ti.

With that said, the GTX 550 TI isn't that great of a choice since the HD 6850 is significantly faster yet only costs $10 more.

It is possible but I wouldn't personally get one. At any given time I may want 60gb worth of games to be playable as well as my OS so 64 just isn't enough. I would get the 128 and a cheaper 500gb storage drive instead of the 1TB above before I chose a 64gb SSD.

I concur with Prav: Add that 128GB SSD. You'll gonna deeply regret not spending the extra money when you had the chance. Oh and you can drop the case down to this to save $50:

You don't really need a 6950 for D3. I am sure we can find you a GPU later for less that will run that game well. 6950 was just really good value at $200 with the ability to play much more demanding games.

If you can't take advantage of that HD 6950 2GB deal, the GTX 480 1.5GB is an alternative:

It does run hot though. So if you do go with the NZXT Source 210 case I listed above, buy a 3rd 120mm fan right away and put it on the side of the case.

If there's still not enough room in the budget for the HD 6950 2GB or GTX 480 1.5Gb, we should be able to find a cheaper option as Prav noted.

It will come with its own cooler but if you want to overclock you will need better cooling.
The most recommended is the $30 Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus
