Civilization V

the maps are gonna be freakin huge..wow...no more stacks of doom..thats a good thing imho.

this is great news but i am still waiting for alpha centauri 2....

hoping multicoer awareness really speed things up for the game as well on the massive maps.

civ 4 just missed the multicore age by a hair hurt it with big games.

Nice! First PC game coming out this year I'm excited about. Well maybe BC2 as well.

I still play Civ. 4 with the R.O.M. modification. I am looking forward to this so much. I hope the game will take advantage multiple cores.

Oh snap! PC only? Mild interest has turned into greater interest. I thought big studio PC exclusives became extinct.

I didnt know Civ IV didnt use multiple cores..Never caused a problem for me though. What did Civ V implement to prevent the Large stack fighting?

It didn't.
Play a game with all civ on a giant earth map.

After 50 turns it turns to a crawl.

I think that is as much poor memory addressing as anything else...whenever it gets stupid slow, I close the game and re-open the game and its all good for a few dozen turns or so...

A bit off topic but-
I've never played any Civ games. Just wasn't interested as I only play fps or racing games.
That being said last December around Cristmas I'm in Best Buy and there is a sale for Civilization IV for $5 [plus FarCry2 for $5 and a few others]
All I could find for Civ IV were expansions and The GOTY edition.
Went to the checkout with the GOTY version and 3 other $5 games and bought them all for $5 each!
I forgot all about the Civ game until this thread and I just opened the box.
It contains a bonus dvd, 3 game discs, and real nice [thick] manual and map.
I got all the patches ready and am about to install the game.
I hope I find the same enjoyment you guys have gotten from the series.
Thanks!

Not 18 civs.
50.

18 is fine but if you use the mod with 50 it's crazy how bad it lags.

50 civs gadzooks, Man! I retract my previous statement about memory alone...I think the whole game was never optimized for that many civs anyway

Right..the game doesnt perform right when using a mod, that is expected. Granted it could have been optimized as the original argument states. But the original game it self never had any performance issues for me.

Because of this announcement, I dusted off Civ 4 last night, and took it for a spin - jesus, 3 hours just flew by. I had forgotten how this game just sucks you in completely. (And the damned thing still looks great!)

That's the best gaming news I've heard in a looong time! Civ V FTW! my brother dad and i play civ 4 against each other all the time. when you're playing from different states and not online at the same time sometimes its awesome you can play the game by "email" time flies away when civing!

How does the e-mail thing work, one turn at a time? Do you have to replace a save file over and over?

Civ IV - best civ ever.

I found it totally not stale. Combat was revamped (much less stack-of-everything fights - lots of rock/paper/scissors type stuff - horses counter catapults but are countered by spearmen which are countered by axemen, etc), culture and religion make a big difference, etc.

Will probably buy on release date! I buy about 2-3 games a year brand new and Civ 5 will surely make the cut.

granted my current system never crawls in civ even on the biggest maps but the time between turns can take awhile in late games with lot of civs still alive. Still iam sure the extra cores will alow the game to handle more stuff in the background behind the scenes.

heard its inspired by the old Panzer General game style, which is alright with me cause Panzer General and its various spin offs were the shit as well, although I wonder if it'll still feel like Civ.

Where did you read this! I loved Panzer General!

Ya and then watch the game slowly crawl to like 4 fps cause of the engine restraints. Hopefully they will fix that so I can play with my buddys on a map bigger than the smallest one.

really I've only got civ5 on my list so far, then I wait for sales/bargain bins on the rest, yea I'm cheap.

I'm really looking forward to this. I'll still frequently put in two day sessions with beyond the sword. Between this and stardock's elemental (master of magic 2?) it's going to be a good year for strategy.

I'm also loving the hex board.

I'm a big turn base strategy guy, if someone says they're making a new HoMM that doesn't suck then I'll add that to my list lol.

damn, i forgot about elemental....

so i guess this will indeed be a very good year for gaming :)

The last Civ game I enjoyed at all was the original (on an Amiga), but I'm an old fart so I guess that fits.

That screenshot looks wicked though, and I'd certainly love to try it out. Gives me a reason to get my damn PC rebuilt as soon as possible.
