Hi everyone,

Post your SFF news from CES 2010 here for discussion!

Right now we have the new Shuttle J series showed which take mini-itx boards and Zotac H55 mini-itx board.

Interested in the j3 :)

Been waiting for news on this before i decide my upgrade path; shuttle or matx (evga x58 micro + dabox)
 
The J-series is ugly, even the J3. Glad I second-thoughted on the H7 when I did.

REALLY awesome that you can go mini-ITX now though. My only option is to order an SX58H7 motherboard from them if I'm ever itching, and hack it in there.

The recent-gen Shuttles are very quiet except for the whiny, small, sleeve-bearing Northbridge fan. I hacked a Zalman ZM-NBF47 onto my Northbridge using a piece of clipped coat hanger to fasten it and with the one 92mm exhaust fan (which also functions as part of the CPU HSF) and the HD 5850 it's damn near silent. Plenty of power, too.
 
I'm pretty excited about this shuttle J3...I hope you don't have to order the mobo with it but I'm sure you do.

I really want some SG07 photos but I think they are little busy and haven't gotten back to me :(.

So far not much on the mini-itx front....this is what I feared but we will see tomorrow. If I was able to make it we'd already know 8)

I love this J3, but one question: how big is the case? Can 3 HDDs fit into?
No specs somewhere?
 
The SG07 by my extremely poor estimates is about 200mm(H)x220mm(W)x330mm(D). This makes it roughly 15L which the SG06 is 13.1L. 15L is still half the size of the Qmicra and much smaller than the SG01 which is 23L.

Ok let me rephrase it, it seems like a huge letdown because it doesn't include the 450sff powersupply and seems pretty ugly from first impressions.

The size was hard to get a real appreciation of given that we only really have a few pictures of it and not really enough to base a lasting opinion.

The main problem is the increased cost of it, $150 for a slightly longer sg06 without power supply...
 
Heared new shuttles have a similar top end J series box too, called Kazi. Similar to the J3 but watercooled?

Actually reading the french translated text.. it says it includes a 600 watt PSU that has special shortened cables included.

So $150 for a 600 watt mini-itx case that fits a 5970 and potentially a H50 on top (if you can find a way to mount it to the 180mm fan) and hopefully a few 3.5" drives.
That's not a bad deal at all, I'm actually looking forward to this, and that Zotac board specifically for the extra Sata ports... hopefully it's ~$130-150...

Does look like it will only hold one 3.5" drive which is a little disappointing...

It comes with a 600w PSU...I think it will look better when we get real pictures. SilverStone told me before the event that they had just gotten the prototype and it was basically in pieces on the way to CES. I think the thing to take away is the capabilities.
 
I see a lot of potential in the SG07, no case is ever perfect for everyone ( that's why we love to mod ). I see a lot of modding potential for the SG07. I for one don't care too much for the front cover ( but I also know that this is just a prototype and the final version or versions might be different).

I'm looking forward to seeing more detailed info on this case.

It's quite ugly as well, never mind. If it broadens the appeal of SFF that can only be a good thing.

In a standard ATX size? I'm not sure about this as I would always want my own silent PSU, even if the included one can be considered adequate.

I agree, if the final version is at least single colour rather than two tone it might improve the look considerably, but the lines on that front panel are just really odd looking

I think it's adapted to the market it's shooting for: very high end gaming in the smallest case. After, yes, it's going to be bigger than the SG05, but it also has an ATX power supply, and can fit a 5970. Not much more you can ask for.
From my standpoint as a developer of mini ITX case, and having designed a case extremely similar to this in the past, the questions that come to mind are:
1. Would people really care about the 2"-3" extra length compared to a SG05? (and the increase in volume that goes with it?)? meaning you would not buy it because of it?
2. Would it make a big difference if it had the same functionalities in the same volume as the SG05?
3. Would you like it better if you could fit your own PSU instead?
4. Would you need more cooling than that?
5. Is the fan on the top of the case an issue? (dust, liquid, etc...)
6. Do you really care what the case looks like, as long as it has the same functionalities?

I'd be curious to see what your answers are to these simple questions. In fact, the impact on the case design is major.

This new case rocks, it has everything I need. Space for a big gaming card, everything else shrunk down to an easy to carry size.

1 Nope
2 Nope, due to above (well i just want as small as i can go, so anything smaller than full matx is winner by me)
3 if the psu is decent then hmmm, id like to use something im comfortable with though
4 Im not too sure, that big top fan looks like it could shift some heat (its placed correctly to do so)
5 Could be, but then id be careful. Dust shouldnt be a problem though
6 I would like it to look sleek/modern/minimal.

Just my preferences, this case looks ideal, except the lack of x58 motherboards, but then we have the shuttle (f that can take long gfx cards then...)

Looks wise im more for plain / lian li / minimal over crazy gamer cases.

If they fixed the placement of the J3's JP5 jumper block placement from the H7 series it will be able to accommodate the HD 5970 no problems. The Shuttle's probably going to retail for around $700 if the SX58H7 is any indication, so I don't think the price premium is worth the couple of shaved liters.
 
Honestly, matt is right. I mean how many people hated the looks of Da Box? How many people hated the look of the Qmicra? How many people hated the look of the SG01. Basically each SFF case has its strengths and weaknesses and you pick based upon what you prefer and or need. If everyone wanted the same thing we'd only have one type of case! Hurray for capitalism :) :p

But yeah, it is bigger and I like smaller but we don't have the exact dimensions and it wouldn't be that much bigger anyway.

In any event, clearly the biggest SFF news of CES. So far it is a dud with mini-itx boards. Did no one take the hint from DFI?
 
I haven't seen anything..then again I haven't done my news search this morning. Shuttle had a press conference at 3pm PST yesterday.
 
Still waiting for Lian Li to roll out the PCQ08 at CES :)
I'm itching for more pictures of that case and for silverstones new 450W SFF PSU. :D
 
Yes, I love small units that's why I bought a Shuttle several years ago...

And I think I will buy the new Shuttle :)

I know I'm picky when I say this

1. Only a little bit, length is less of a annoyance for me but width & height could become troublesome. After a bit of domestic travel, length can be dealt with a bit but width & especially height are a bit more of a hassle

2. It'd be preferable if it had better functionalities in the same volume but developers usually make the better decision for what to sacrifice

3. If the stock PSU was modular and smaller than the one I had my eye on, no.

4. One would hope not.

5. It could be adapted for a radiator and is quite large in size, this could help accomodate larger fans/heatsinks etc.

6. I'd prefer something like your LanBox 100, a very... minimalistic. No flashy windows/lights, perhaps a few vent holes where they're needed
 
Do you think it's worth waiting for the J3 instead of buying a SX58H7 now?
Because from my point of view the J3, regarding its specs, is a redesigned H7

It is. The only real advantage is the ability to accept mini-ITX boards.


If you're lucky the release of the J3 will produce a price drop in the H7.
