CES 2010: SFF Style

Well, it should still fit any mini-itx motherboard, and any 2-slot mini-itx case (SG05, PC-Q08, New LanGear box)... (The motherboard inside there that is)

You could stick two Razer GTX260's in there,although the cooling would be terrible, watercooling them would be better, but with watercooling you could stick in whatever you want granted it could be cooled by a couple 120mm rad's.
 
Shuttle did announce mini-ITX support for the chassis, but how useful is it? How important is the CPU placement? If you upgrade, will you still be able to use the Shuttle heatsink?

I assume you can't actually get the proprietary Shuttle motherboard with two expansion slots on it's own, only as part of a system or barebones? Assuming you did get one, would it necessarily have compatible riser placements to fit a mini-ITX chassis? Maybe it is mini-DTX compatible.
 
IanM you're right, I don't know if the mini-ITX standard specifies the CPU placement?

Decision, decision... at the moment I don't know which SFF case to buy.... Shuttle or?

I'm going to do a steve's preferred SFF on my website soon. Personally right now I'd get the SG05 or SG06 with the DFI mini-itx board, low voltage ddr3 1600 ram and the amd 5770
 
Not really, over here you can get slim ODDs for £5-£10 more than the larger ones. Hardly bank breaking. :)

Not a bad eyeball job by me.

190mm(H)x222mm(W)x350mm(D) for the SG07 which is 15L
177mm(H)x220mm(W)x286mm(D) for the SG06 by the way
212mm(H)x263mm(W)x393mm(D) for the SG01-F which is 23L

This is roughly 14.5% bigger than the SG06.

For those in the USA like myself...The extra depth of 64mm is about 2.5in and the extra 13mm in height is about a half an inch.

The biggest thing to take away from CES is that if you aren't the size of intel or microsoft your company probably has the PR skills of a mothball. Seriously, look at some of the videos and then don't ever complain about Best Buy employees again.
 
This SG07 looks good, maybe I will go for it with a good mini-ITX board, socket 1156, core i7 860... only one point is annoying me: only one HDD 3,5' bay :( I love Raid 0.... I will have to forget it with this case :(
 
Finally here are my choices:

SilverStone SG04 (a little bit too big but you can put whatever you want in this case...)

SilverStone SG07

Shuttle SX58J3 or SX58H7

but I think I will remove the Shuttle from the list because there is no socket 1156 support! New case and already 'has been' :)

You need to replace the fan with a slimline to accommodate a 5870 size card

now we have to wait for more infos about these cases... we still don't know if we will be able to buy these cases without the Shuttle mobo.

The SG05 and SG06 only have 1x3.5HD. That's all you need along with an SSD.

And by the way...you can see my last comment which actually describes that Shuttle rep. Sorry buddy...but it's true.

Didn't TomsHardware show that the P55 chipset is better? The difference is when you use more than one PCI-E slot and then X58 is better...I'll see if I can find that article again or perhaps I'm dreaming it up ha.
 
Nah it's probably close to true... that was sorta my dealbreaker on picking a P55 vs. re-using my X58 stuff for a m-ATX build... the lack of dual 16x PCI-E slots on P55 boards... they're all 8x 8x or 16x 4x.... =/

But I think I may still go that route... I doubt I'll notice the difference but should save some money...

I expected very little and I still thought there would be more...it was extremely bad. Even Shuttle bailed on us...opting to highlight the laptops.

Hope SFF isn't a dying bread.

would be interesting too see. I meant raw processor power though, (I use 3d modelling software etc) I wonder if theres much difference?

If I remember the article you're talking about, I don't think the point was that p55 is -better- than x58, but they're different, plus, processors on p55 are running with turbo boost, which will affect things.

I'm not saying p55 is worse than x58 at all, but i certainly think they're apples and oranges :-D
 
I've been avoiding Shuttle for a few years now due to the inability to upgrade easily. I'm really digging the the J3!

Do we have a price on the J-series yet?

Nah, SFF never gets the attention other forms get it seems but SFF has been doing really well over last couple of years IHMO. More people buy laptops and ATX desktops and thats why you are seeing a lot of those offerings at CES. Larger market. Personally, I don't care if they do or don't show SFF stuff at CES. I don't need the teasing showy shows and flashy hype. Just keep releasing SFF items like they have been and I'm perfectly happy. Thats just me though. :)

The thing is, if it isn't at CES it probably won't be released soon. I like to know what is going to be released so I can get an idea about what to buy. Oh well.
 
Exactly, By not seeing the new 450w PSU by silverstone and the new PCQ08 case by Lian LI at CES tells me that they are not ready for production. At least not in the 1st Qtr of 2010.

They may say that the PSU will be available at the end of Jan or beginning of Feb, But to me CES say's otherwise.
 
CES really isn't the place to see new computer / PC stuff. The big show for computer / PC stuff is CeBit in March. CES is mainly for consumer electronics.
