Hey I think that's awesome but I have friends who watch a lot of anime and whatnot (subtitles). Honestly I hate all the stupid video codecs. I don't want to spend hours tweaking settings, I just want a video player that works with virtually every file that has or does not have subtitles. If MPC-HC does this no problem, them I'm totally all over that. This is why I stayed with VLC for so long; it's never failed me but some friends who watch anime say they do encounter subtitle issues from time to time. This thread is just my research into seeing what's the best option.

For the past few days I've been using the Windows7Codec (by Shark007) and it's worked pretty well with both various file formats and subs. But again, I want to see what's the best option and get everyone's input.

MPC-HC handles subtitles really well. Just make sure to go into Options > Playback > Output and tick EVR Custom Pres.

MPC-HE/BestPlayer+CoreAVC+Haali Media Splitter+DirectVobSub
I´ve been using VLC in a few years but I don´t like it. I also hate to install codec packs like CCCP, Vista Codecs etc. because I never use more then a half of the codecs it installs on my PC.

I like both! VLC is simpler to install with no extra codecs, the inferface and functionality of MPC-HC is a little better. I have been switching back and forth every time I format pretty much!

surprised at the # of people who don't use reclock or just didn't mention it.

CodecPack + Media Player Classic + VCL seem to cover it when it comes to weird shit.

Other wise I try to use Window's Media Player when I can.

Only works in XP. Vista and 7 don't have tearing problems like XP (vsync anyone?) so it's unnecessary.

?

been working in vista for awhile.. even works on EVR.

You can apply fake 25fps count or mpc-hc vsync but those arent 100%

In fact

"The original app: http://reclock.free.fr/ allowed video framerates to be slowed/sped up to match the refresh rate you were using, but Vista broke it. The great news is that Slysoft (AnyDVD) has taken up the challenge: http://forum.slysoft.com/showthread.php?t=19931"

I'm still failing to see how it helps Vista and 7 users. Vista and 7 already use vsync for video playback. I installed it, set it to work with EVR, loaded up a movie, and as I expected there was absolutely no difference/improvement. What purpose does this program serve in Vista/7?

Nevermind, I see that you still use XP, so that explains why it's useful to you. ReClock is no longer needed for Vista and 7 as they take care of the syncing.

Then why would they add support for Vista and waste there time with it.

I know Vista uses aero. Perhaps its for DXVA on vista?

Yeah, I have no idea. Maybe there is some other use for it that I don't know about. I guess if you have any PAL movies you could correct the speed.

CCCP = Shit
VLC = Shit

MPC-HC = WIN

Does anyone have an example file that doesn't work with VLC? Seriously, I watch all kinds of files/formats all the time (some with subs) and have never had a problem with it. Nobody has ever taken the time to explain why it's "shit".

quality, jaggies around the edges like lack of AA in games

The definition of bloat. No HW acceleration. Completely in-efficient decoders. With MPC-HC being just as capable with a MUCH smaller footprint + HW acceleration + ability to use any external decoder you want (but don't have to), there is NO reason TO use VLC.

What does VLC have to do with games? Wrong thread much? :p

Its not that it wont play everything, it just the decoders are complete shit.
They are ineffecient, and dont use Hardware acceleration....WTF HA has been around for a while now.

Also sometime since the decoders blow goats the picture artifacts and looks like ass on my TV.

so to sum up VLC is:
Bloated
Inefficient
has crappy quality
no HA

I dont see any positives in this list do you?

MPC-HC is:
small
uses HA
has great decoders
efficient
can play anything

Ah, now see THAT is what I'm talking about. I wasn't aware of the lack of HW acceleration. But as far as bloat, what makes it any more bloated than a bunch of codec packs (I'm not saying the codec packs won't do a better job)?

I've never noticed any difference in quality between it and MPC-HC, but maybe I've been looking for the wrong things.

Yea but you don't need codec packs with MPC-HC... It plays anything out there all by itself just like VLC. The thing is, if you want to, you CAN augment it with external codecs. I add CoreAVC to it to get CUDA decoding with my GPU.

To clarify, you can get GPU decoding with JUST MPC-HC by itself with DXVA, but CoreAVC is more compatible with lvl5.1 High Profile encodes that I have a few of.

Thank you! That's the stuff I want to know about. I'll have to give MPC-HC a shot then.

DXVA is a little faster too in some cases, depending on the hardware you're running. I'm still a CoreAVC man, and probably always will be, but with DXVA built right in, I really can't imagine why anyone would use anything other than MPC-HC.

But, hey, to each his own :)

Get it from here. Only place still releasing new builds. The builds on Sourceforge are very old.

Ouch, the official MPC-HC page is out of date?

That site won't be updated till August 23.

This is the latest build 1197. Download it from here

Oh and did I mention that MPC-HC does NOT need an INSTALLER. YOU just NEED 1 EXE File to play everything.

Meh, I prefer having a nice installer and uninstaller present for all my apps.

No need to type in large yellow letters...

it comes in both flavors. installers are a hassle since MPCHC comes out with a new version pretty soon. so removing, installing becomes a hassle. a single exe file is perfect

Yes I know, I have been using it since... forever. I don't remove and install with each new release, nor do I jump on every new release (no need to). I get a new once whenever I remember to which is usually every few months, and I just install it over the old one. The installer is designed to do so.

XBMC and VDPAU

I'm genuinely curious why you posted this? Did you even read the thread title? CCCP was mentioned... A Windows codec pack. How is XBMC for Linux going to be a constructive suggestion?

Not to mention we are talking about players not HTPC frontends.

You sir, FAIL. ;)

Yeah I noticed that when downloading from sourceforge. I got kinda confused. I also prefer an installer.

Now if only I could read Russian to better understand that site you linked.

Most everything on that site is in Russian as well as English. Click Media Player Classic - HomeCinema on the top left of the main page.

This is the kind of thinking we need to break.

Could you please explain why?

K-lite 5.0.3 = MPC-HC, Haali and Quicktime+Real Alternative. There is a problem why?

I've tried to make the switch to CCCP a couple of times cause I keep hearing people tell me how great it is and I always end up with problems somewhere along the way, never had any problems with K-lite (Mega Pack) and if I did, there was an update that fixed it already out. I keep VLC on all my systems cause its like the Swiss Army knife of media players.

Because codec packs, no matter which way you slice it, are completely useless. Especially with Windows 7. If you want to play anything out there with 7, all you need to do is install Haalis and your done....

WMP will play it all with just that. The built in MediaFoundation filters take care of anything.

Now I hate WMP so if you want to use something else, just install MPC-HC along with Haalis.

That combo will again, play anything out there, no exceptions...

There is NO reason people should be using antiquated shitty codec packs anymore.

My mistake by the way, MPC-HC can decode just about anything nowadays. I didnt even need to install ffdshow with it this time. Make sure you use the EVR output mode on recent video cards so it will use DXVA hardware assisted decoding & shading! Looks great on my box in sig!!

Except for mkv files with subtitles, there is something that Haali+wmp can't play. Vlc can, but I prefer mpc-hc.
