Except for mkv files with subtitles, there is something that Haali+wmp can't play. Vlc can, but I prefer mpc-hc.

To be honest, that is true. I always forget about subtitles because I every rarely use them, if ever. 99.9% of the movies I have have native English audio tracks.

Still, any video out there will play in 7 with just Haalis added.

Like you, I prefer MPC-HC as well.

Fixed! ;)

Does MPC-HC replace the need for ffdshow? I've noticed it's a little different than just "regular" MPC since I swapped early this morning, but how big of a difference is there?

Yes, it has all its own internal decoders, including GPU acceleration for H264 material.

And to everyone else, unless you get your copy of MPC-HC from here, you have an out of date build.

MPC-HC is a media player - it's not a codec (although it does have internal MPEG/MPEG2 decoders, but not much else in terms of decoding). FFDShow is a codec, of sorts, so the two items work together (FFDShow works to decode the content, and MPC-HC displays it).

The difference between MPC and MPC-HC is that (for the most part) MPC-HC allows you to take advantage of the DXVA/EVR capabilities of the video subsystem in Vista and Windows 7 which don't exist in XP/etc. Basically DXVA and EVR are ways of offloading the decoding of video content to the video card's GPU (I could be wrong about this from a technically precise perspective, so if I am I'm sure someone will slam me for it).

That's the primary difference between MPC and MPC-HC... or at least as I care to understand it. :D

So you DO need FFDShow after all (if you play mkv's with subs)?

Good Lord this is ridiculous. Why can't there be a Firefox of media players/codecs? I'm sick of messing with settings and tweaking.

No, you don't.

(damn, I knew Joe's post was going to confuse people...)

MPC-HC + Haalis = ALL YOU NEED for ANYTHING

There is no settings to tweak. Install and play. Done.

Does MPC-HC work in xp smoothly for anyone? I understand its advantages in vista/7 but I still use xp and can't seem to get (the latest) build to work smoothly.

Maybe its conflicting with what I already have (haali + ffshow + zoomplayer). I'm going to play around it some more.

Unless you have ffdshow and haalis setup in MPC-HC's "external decoders" section, they aren't conflicting. Haali's should actually be in there, but uninstall ffdshow.

If you're using MPC-HC, with Windows 7, I still don't get the recommendation for Haali's Splitter, I really don't. I don't use it, and everything plays, and I get video, I get audio (yes, even 5.1 if the video has it), and I don't use Haali's, so...

Exactly why does that keep getting recommended?!?

I know if you plan to use Windows Media Player 12 or Media Center in Windows 7 Haali's is basically a requirement, but if you don't plan to ever use WMP12, and your primary media player is MPC-HC, what's with the Haali's recommendation so often.

That's probably the one aspect of all this crap I haven't been able to get... 'cause I see people recommend it constantly and, in my experience (because I don't use WMP for much of anything, ever), it's just not needed unless you plan to use WMP or Media Center.

So what gives...

For exactly what you said... for 7MC. And that there are limitations in what the MPC-HC Matroska splitter can do. Has trouble with different video streams inside the same MKV for example.

You do understand that rmvb is actually a pretty descent format and there is no way in hell you playing it with just MPC-HC and Haali, right? K-lite is up to date and has everything you ever need.

I was gonna make note that Real Media content will not play in Windows 7 regardless of what player/splitter/etc you decide to use unless you put some Real codecs on there... but but but... ;) It's just another container for Real Media content, so... gotta have some Real codecs to decode it. I could be wrong on that, however, because I simply refuse to allow Real content on any machines I own/use. Someone else will of course know better...

Real Alternative...*cheese cough* *cheese cough*

Whatever you don't need with k-lite, you can disable when install it, gives you the choice what to install right off the bat and can be configured anytime you want after.

Real Alternative...*cheese cough* *cheese cough*

Yes, but Real Alternative still installs the Real codecs, as I specifically stated they are required - nothing else that I'm aware of will play that craptastic shit... :D

My finger got tired just thinking about having to uncheck about 45 out of the roughly 50 programs/filters/codecs K-Lite installs by default.

Whoever suggested Klite should be dragged into the street and beaten. It's garbage. Plain and simple. I can't even tell you how many times I've had to fix issues all due to shittastic Klite.

VLC is crap too. Get a real media player like MPC:HC.

no problems here also. use FFDShow + MPCHC in VMR9 and DXVA set for mkv / vc1 files.

Its astounding how many people are still coupling MPC-HC with some shit-tastic codec pack... Just use it on its own!

I agree with this. I remember I tried K-Lite a while ago and it was the biggest pain in the ass. Tried it again recently and it's still a pain in the ass only it installs MORE crap you don't need. I'm sure it was great during the days of XP, but those days are long gone.

Lately over the past week or so, I've been using Windows7codecs (which does not override the default Win7 codecs) with WMP 12 and it's been working pretty damn well so far.

Klite was always garbage. Back in the XP days it was common for Klite to include hacked copies of retail codec's which caused a ton of headaches. It did some rootkit level shit that could hose the entire OS. The only way to properly remove Klite was to do a full install of Windows.

Good God, what's up with all these KLite followers. I too was a KLite worshipper once, but it was a hassle having to install it after every new release and checking 50 different options.

Just get 1 MPC-HC.exe file, check all internal filters and play all the files out there except Real format files. You don't even need ffdshow and Haali.

Good god, people open your eyes to trying something different, your way is not the only way.

Here is a very small sample of files that MPC-HC plays back perfectly all on its own. These files are some of the most popular you come across this day and age.

Good God, what's up with all these KLite followers.

Ugh, it's like the same idiots who disable SuperFetch or try to use XP tweak tips on Vista/7. That is an impressive list by the way.

Just get 1 MPC-HC.exe file, check all internal filters and play all the files out there except Real format files. You don't even need ffdshow and Haali.

This is one area I actually had a problem with when using MPC-HC. Whenever I tried to check all the boxes it would tell me I didn't have permission or whatnot. And this is on a fresh installation of Win7.

You need to run it as Administrator the first time, set all the options you need, then you'll be good to go.

Get the latest build from the xvideo site (I forget the exact address, but Criccio has linked it about 100 times in this thread) and most of the settings should be set automatically for you.

I have MPC:HC and VLC installed on my system. They're both free so why not? :p

i've tried cccp, vlc & klite pack.

only tried cccp once and most of the videos i played were fucked up. tried vlc.

vlc worked fine for awhile and started having issues (5+ years ago. don't remember).

went on to klite and everything worked fine. if i ever ran into an issue it was fixed in an updated pack shortly there after.

i live in the xp dark ages. ok, w/e. i'd like to move on to only 1-3 simple installs to get ALL the stuff i play on my pc to work. when mpc:hc 1st came out i gave it a try. i watch LOTS of anime and that didn't do anything but give me problems. i immediately went back to mpc & klite. i'm sure i had a setting all wrong, but didn't really feel like figuring it out. lol, i've been using klite for so damn long i know what i need from within it and it works flawlessly every time. i'm still on 4.9.5 and 5 is out so be4 i install 5 i'll try this "updated" link for the most recent version of mpc:hc and see if my videos work any better.

this is what i need:

1. xvid/divx
2. h264
3. ac3
4. mp3
5. able to play soft subs
6. able to play hard subs without frame loss

i also liked the option in ffdshow that boosts my "video" brightness.

what am i looking to get for what i've mentioned minus mpc:hc?

I don't know what you're asking. MPC-HC does all of that and more with ease.

where's the brightness control?

are there options somewhere for dxva?

edit: just used my nvidia control panel for brightness. not sure why i can't use mpc's.

so far so good. are there any good tweaks i should be looking at? what do i need haali for? would i benefit from coreavc? seems u either have to buy core or... no free dl there. when using klite codec pack there were options to configure dxva. messed with them once and it didn't work out for the better. that's why i asked about the options for dxva. if it's even something i need to do.

i also found this.

didn't seem to actually do much justice for me, but then again i'm on a 24'. maybe that matters.

The only thing you need is MPC-HC, you shouldn't need anything else at all to play typical videos. To use DXVA with MPC-HC you need to use EVR or EVR Custom under Playback/Output in the options of MPC-HC. To see if MPC-HC is using DXVA press Ctrl+J during video playback and it will tell you if it's in use with an overlay. (This assumes you are using Vista/7, also it appears the guide you linked goes over it pretty well)

evr was enabled by default & i thought there was just more tweating to dxva than that. mpchc is spoiling ppl.

Yes, in new builds of MPC-HC, all the settings for proper HA are enabled by default.

Mr. Nails, the advantage of using something like CoreAVC (for me) instead of the built in decoder is that it uses CUDA instead of DXVA which is compatible with alot more file that DXVA sometimes will choke on. lvl 5.1 1080p encodes for example, which I have quite a few of. Other than that, MPC-HC's internal filters take care of the rest.
