im on the shark codec bandwagon too. cccp started giving me problems as of late, sharks is gold. well, i use home media center cinema with sharks, because that program can overscan on my crt tv

I use shark's Vista Codecs, I realize codec packs aren't popular here, but eh, I mean I just install Vista Codecs + x64 package, and everything plays in WMP and VMC, nothing to complain about.

Not going to argue, because it works for you, but once you go with Windows 7, you don't have to install anything.

WELL, that's not entirely true.

There are some things you will need to install to support some formats (Windows does not have built-in support for matroska splitting, for instance), but really, it's quite minimal. I don't understand why people have this thing abou MPC-HC when WMP gets the job done just as well. They're both just apps that show DirectShow output anyway.

Win7 + WMP11 + haali media splitter + directvobsub (for soft subs) = awesome.

never had an issue with CCCP, been using it for around 2yrs now. love its simplicity

i just use the beta builds and deselect the stuff i dont need. only thing ive ever needed to install separately was madFLAC

Not true. MPC-HC + CoreAVC on my netbook (in sig) plays 720p perfectly fine...

I gotta say, why anyone would use anything other than MPC-HC is beyond me.

I meant in my experience with the programs I've ran. I could of worded it better.

I'm talking utorrent, firefox, and steam running and still being able to play 720p. I didn't do extensive testing but GOM ran better than vlc, windows media, real player, quick time and even zoom player.

GOM plays files instantly and has never lagged for me. Its beyond me why anyone would use anything else tbh. I'll give MPC-HC + CoreAVC a fair shot this afternoon. I'm bored as hell anyway.

lol threads like these always amuse me. So many closed-minded people who think their way is the only way and there can't possibly be anything better.

I hope there are at least a few people like me who read these threads and go "hey, there are some interesting-sounding new ideas for me to try" :)

Anyone have any alternative suggestions for upconverting DVDs to an LCD TV? I've been using MPC + FFDShow for ages but I'd love something more streamlined.

Some of us spend time in other forums that concentrate in encoding and playing back of media where all players and methods have been tested.

MPC-HC is the player of choice of "people who know what they are doing". Harsh, but true.

Ah but just because one uses the player of choice of "people who know what they are doing" doesn't mean that one knows what THEY are doing ;) I guess I should consider myself lucky that I use the one player :p

No other suggestions for upconverting? MPC/FFDShow gets the job done but they're so fiddly and ugly :(

Then you don't know about DXVA acceleration in MPC-HC.

I've been using VLC for a while now and it plays everything I've tried to play seamlessly.

I've been using VLC for a while now and it plays everything I've tried to play seamlessly with about 15 to 20% more CPU usage than other players....

Fixed. VLC, while it may be compatible with alot of things, its a dog, it really is.

Meh. The only thing I'm doing when I'm watching video is watching video so it can use as much CPU as it wants.

Yet MPC-HC is just as compatible, a ton more efficient, AND gives you the option of using your GPU to decode video... Simple decision for me....

Doesn't offloading to the GPU affect the video quality though? Personally I'm with the other guy on CPU vs GPU - I'm not hurting for resources so that's not going to be a deciding factor for me. Personally I find VLC's video quality to be iffy, depending on what's being played. I mainly keep it around as a backup catch-all. Haven't tried MPC in that role but perhaps I'll give it a shot. Neither is exactly the king of pretty or friendly interfaces, so it's mostly a wash to me.

Then you don't know about DXVA acceleration in MPC-HC.

Yes, I do know about it. However, Media Foundation uses DXVA acceleration, and WMP in Windows 7 interfaces with Media Foundation for pretty much every video codec that matters. In regards to DXVA acceleration, WMP and MPC-HC are pretty much dead even as long as you are using Windows 7.

Not that hardware acceleration really matters for most video content, but it is still nice to have.

GOM PLAYER!!!!!

Best interface imo with hundreds of tweaking options. Also, its the only player that doesn't stutter with 720p with a few other programs running. (on netbook) I only have 1gb in this netbook for now so that shows how well it manages resources.

I used vlc for 2 years or so before switching.

my fanboy comment...
same here, I use them all but GOM is the default one, plays broken AVI's and when you seek throw a video it does it instantly, VLC has that 0.2 sec delay.
oh and it gives my video files great icons with the extension of every file writen on the icon image.

i used to love it too, but lately they have slacked off with updates and all. Plus I found MPC-HC with GPU decoding and all

Have been using MPC-HC + ffdshow for ages. But ffdshow is showing its limitations when playing HD stuffs.

ffdshow can improve DVD quality quite a lot. Can MPC-HC & CoreAVC do that?

CoreAVC is an H264 decoder. So no. But MPC-HC will decode DVD's on its own.

What are you living in 1999? HA is a MUST for any HTPC nowadays.

Only if you cannot play your videos at full speed without hardware acceleration is it a must. It is still nice to have, though, and there's no reason to not use a solution which has it. What I was pointing out was that Windows 7 has h.264 hardware acceleration through media foundation, so there is no point to using MPC-HC if all you're worried about is hardware acceleration (there are still other reasons why people might want to use it, however) because any application that can interface with media foundation will have hardware acclerated h.264 in Windows 7.

Ehh, for h264 in 7MC I use CoreAVC because it uses CUDA. The built in decoder doesn't and is limited on what h264 media it will accelerate in hardware.

If you build a HTPC nowadays you get one with a HA capable IGP and you put a slow/low power CPU in it. Therefore HA IS required.

Windows 7 codecs (by Shark007); has anyone tried them and would they recommend it? The less random apps and clutter I have to install, the better.

Then don't install anything except Haalis Media Splitter. That's it. That's all you need in 7 to play anything.

If you don't play MKV files than forget Haalis.

I prefer CCCP, but only because I have an HTPC. I do wish they updated a bit more frequently though

Have you tried Windows7Codecs (by Shark007)? That was my main question.

I play MKV files in Windows 7 without anything but MPC-HC... is that like a difficult thing for other people or am I just missing something?

Some people are just hell bent on using codec packs.. *shivers*

To be honest though, if you want to take advantage of different audio and subtitle tracks in a Matroska file, you will need to install a splitter such as Haalis or Gabest. Again, not a requirement, but usefull if you want to take advantage of the Matroska format.

Also, technically you don't even need MPC-HC anymore (I still use it, I'm just making a point). Install Haalis after a fresh install and then point WMP to any MKV and it will play fine.

Easy.

Just did a fresh install of 7600 (RTM) last night on my HTPC. All I did was install CoreAVC (not required unless you want to use CUDA) which installs Haalis as well, installed Media Browser, opened up[ 7MC and was playing any and all video file/formats/containers I could find.

It really is stupid easy with 7. Less is more people.

For once and for all, just say NO to codec packs!

you can do that in MPC HC.

Hey I think that's awesome but I have friends who watch a lot of anime and whatnot (subtitles). Honestly I hate all the stupid video codecs. I don't want to spend hours tweaking settings, I just want a video player that works with virtually every file that has or does not have subtitles. If MPC-HC does this no problem, them I'm totally all over that. This is why I stayed with VLC for so long; it's never failed me but some friends who watch anime say they do encounter subtitle issues from time to time. This thread is just my research into seeing what's the best option.

For the past few days I've been using the Windows7Codec (by Shark007) and it's worked pretty well with both various file formats and subs. But again, I want to see what's the best option and get everyone's input.

MPC-HC w/ Haalis will never give you trouble with subtitles.

One more time for good measue: Just say NO to codec packs!
