Cat 4.12s released

I'm using the Omega 2.5.97 based of the Cat 4.12 beta's they always give me a nice free performance boost. I wonder if there is anything new in the final version of the Cat's?

The CCC is the worst graphics related software I've EVER used. After installing .NET my computer takes about twice as long to boot up and the CCC doesn't add functionality... it takes it away! I can't adjust my VSYNC settings like I used to. The AI setting is terrible. All it does is put the performance/quality slider and settings all the way to performance. Its not a true performance boost, its just lowering the IQ to the max so that you get more FPS. Fireballs in Doom 3 and smoke effects in other games look like something from 1995 when the slider is automatically put on highest performance, which is what happens even in 2d mode when you put AI on high.

Its like AOL vs IE. One is for people who don't know how the internet works and lets them point and click their way to disaster, the other requires a basic knowledge and allows functionality with an all-business, no fluff approach. Yes I mean catalyst vs Forceware.

Uh...What are you talking about? I doesn't do anything to image quality. You must have something wrong going on. It's..really no different from forceware either in the way things are presented. The only thing "people friendly" is the car driving, but you don't even have to have that displayed if you don't want.

I thought the same thing about CCC and V-sync. It's there you have to scroll down in the 3d options. I think they now call it wait for vertical refresh.

Uninstall CCC and you'll get your old display property tabs back.

I'm not at my computer right now *..I don't know how I'm typing!*

well home computer:
But I believe he meant second tab under monitor. I know it's JUST about the 3D section.

There's a couple of settings for VSync

control panel, add/remove programs, ati catalyst control center, remove

What a pain in the ass. I swear I'm tempted to rip the copper heatsinks I had to buy for this 9800 because didn't come with any and toss it in the trash. It uses more power than my 6800 and sucks by comparison. The drivers blow as well. Every time I change something in the drivers, it resets itself back to "performance" if you change anything else! Damn them and their craptimizations. I'm starting to hate the way they do things at ATI.

After you uninstall the CCC version. You have to download the CP version and install them.

Already done, and boy does my computer boot faster now. It wasn't .NET slowing me down, it was that stupid ATI crap loading up on boot.

1. Why would you go from a 6800 to a 9800?

2. Ease off the caffeine.

If you notice my signature I've got TWO (dun dun dun) computers. I bought the 9800 pro because it was on sale for 200 at Best Buy.

lol @ dun dun dun...

The CCC is a pos... but it's the "wave of the future" so that's life....

its the wave of the future if you want that branding of being certified for Longhorn, cause Longhorn is all about .NET

hopefully it will mature before Longhorn is out

CCC has come a long way since its alpha days ;)

a coworker of mine was bitching about load times with ati's drivers...anyone else have that problem???

You sir are making stupid statements.

1) 9800's are great cards
2) they can't compare to 6800's, in fact 6800's are about twice as fast... but they ARE twice as NEW as well with nearly TWICE the pipes.
3) you need to learn how to use the driver, you haven't been "saving" your settings correctly, obviously.

~Adam

You make way too many assumptions. I do in fact save the settings properly, but whenever you change certain settings in different parts of the CCC it overrides the previous ones because it assumes you mean that you want optimizations all around, rather than specifically, which is possible through Forceware.

Correction, from your statement you should have said the 9800pro WAS a good card, since you said yourself it gets creamed by a 6800nu which is about the same price. I made a stupid mistake in buying the card and I'll be the first to admit that ;)

Boss seems to be related to a few of the July boys.

Two words for you: User error.

It's just a royal pain in the ass to get around the CCC's automatic settings that override what you tell it to do. You can't even get REAL Trinilear filtering in ANY ATI settings menu. Its interface is needlessly laden with garbage that doesn't serve any purpose but to make idiots think they're getting some kind of automation in their endeavour to get better performance. Its not that the program has a mind of its own or boggles the knowledgable computer users mind, but rather that its an anachronistic piece of junk that has no functionality advantage over the regular driver interface in windows. All it managed to do was slow down my boot time, which a lot of other users are having issues with as well. ATI misleads you into thinking its something beneficial or necessary.

Tell me, what do you do with your CCC that you aren't able to do with ATI Tool or the regular control pannel?

I fail to see how it is anachronistic.

it does have added functionality that you can't get with the regular control panel, Catalyst AI control for one, Overdrive 3, App Detection, etc....

Its lack of advantage over the regular control pannel combined with its disadvantage of making the computer take forever to boot not enough?

there are features exclusive to CCC, as posted above

and future ones planned

The Catalyst AI was precisely what I was talking about. If you set the AI to high, it automatically overrides any custom settings and puts the sliders ALL THE WAY on performance. Which as you must know enables every one of their little tricks to give you better FPS at the expense of a good image. Its not artificially intelligent, its just sleight of hand so I wouldn't call them really advantageous. If you like all those decorations that do nothing in a practical sense thats fine, but I prefer a straightforward interface thats not designed to make up for architectural and performance inferiority.

I installed the new 4.12's and ran the timedemo I made for HL2. Frame rates went down, I noticed graphics imperfections, and a weird stuttering issue while in the airboat.

Your ignorance on Catalyst AI is amazing. It can also deliver game specific optimizations like fix bugs and shader replacement w/o loss of image quality. If you dont like the way AI works you could always click the box that says "disable AI".....its not really that hard

BossNoodle: It's really funny hearing YOU complain about how something is a POS...when you can't even find Vsync :)

No it doesn't. You have some issues you need to resolve with your computer

There was a little bit more of a startup time the very first time it came out for ME (like 15 seconds i guess) It started going away with each build. Then after I reinstall my whole computer and installed from scratch all the start up load times disappeared.

I saw him talking about CCC so I installed it and its much better than the early iterations (i totally avoided it past few releases). He would have probably burst out crying after using the first CCC. It doesn't need as much cpu cycles now, but the ram usage using it is still somewhat high while using it (30MB for me). CLI app now drops to 1~2mb when you close it, which is much improved over the first one. Dunno about the changing certain settings changing everything to performance, doesn't happen here.

Now for the gripes. Anyone know how to disable the preview :p? Really, CCC would be so much better if you could disable this and its probably the main issue most people have with this thing. Also does it really have to refresh the screen when I set something? The standard control panel got rid of this and ccc just reintroduced it back.

I was wondering about overdrive.. I have an x800xt and haven't seen it anywhere....

Ummm...I just updated to the 4.12 drivers for my 9600XT....now I have lost the Overdrive functionality?

WTF over????
