Cant boot from Cd

I just built a Budget folding box. It has no hard drive and I am running overclockix ( live linux cd) as my OS . I plugged in the cd-rom drive into the master slot on the mobo. ( asrock K7VT4A+ ) ,set the jummper on the cd drive to master,configured the BIOS to boot from cd only, saved the settings then rebooted.
I recognized the CDROM drive as the master drive . So I put in the CD and rebooted. The OS didnt load. the error message was something to the effect of " looking for boot record on cd----------- error no boot record found , insert media into the proper boot device and reboot."
I tryed different CDrom/CD-R drives, I even tryed other live Linux CDs even ones off the shelf that i didnt burn ( suse .etc). No luck./ The CD drives and Cds work in other boxes with even older hardware... any ideas guys?

In the BIOS, for the primary master port, do you have it set to None or Auto. None will still allow Windows to see the drive, but until it's set to auto, you can't boot from it.
 
I tryed both, there is no OS , I am going to run a live CD ( linux) none worked

I know there's no OS....I was explaining the difference in the settings. If everything seems to work elsewhere, then it's still most likely a BIOS setting. That's the one unchanged hardware part.
 
Depending on the board have you looked in the boot screen for a msg that gives a keystroke combo to choose your boot drive?

Yes i tryed that, the key stroke on the boot screen is F11, so I clicked CDROM and still got the same error :(

Is the CD bootable? I ask this because you can have the OS on the CD, and the CD still not be bootable. If you downlaoded and burned an ISO, then this shouldn't be an issue. But if you just copied the files to a CDROM and burned it, it won't have a boot record, and will thus be unbootable.

I had to learn this the hard way when i tried to make a multiple OS CDROM. Had every OS on it that i put there, and every OS would install from that disk. But i could not boot it. There are tutorials on the web about how to make a bootable CD, a little google will find 'em for you.

ya, I tryed ISOs that I burned and they have worked on other computers, I also tryed redhat, suse ( retail discs ) and a win2000 disc to see if it would recognise it.
No luck :(

It sounds like it may be a problem with the CDROM. Is it an older CDROM that you had around or is it a new one?

I ran into a new burner 2 or 3 years back that wouldn't boot CDs while a DVD ROM that was a couple of years older had no problem with it.

This box is in my folding farm, I use the same CDROM on all boxen, swapping it out the front( hot swap lol ) as needed, I just loaded Linux on another box a few days ago with the same CDROM drive :confused:

edit; ok I found out that this CDROM drive will work on everyother box but this one, I pulled the DVDRW drive out of something and its loading up now, thanks for all your help guys
