Well, here's what I'm at so far...and I've barely had to push this thing, I have every confidence that I'll hit 3.3GHz and maybe 3.4GHz with the stock cooler. Only hitting load temps of 62C with the stock cooler and pre-applied thermal paste ain't bad, 3.6GHz (for a 100% OC) should be a walk in the park once I lap my IHS and get a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme.

.94 version of Core temp reads 15C lower than the .95 version on tjunction and in actual temps, since the .94 is pretty much what the bios reads, i'm using that version till a newer version is out.

This also jives with what the MSI software for my board reads.
Your BIOS should read at 15 degrees lower than the individual core temps. BIOS = Tcase and shouldn't be much higher than ambient temp at idle even on the stock cooler. The C2D temps are hard to make comparisons with other processors since most people now refer to the core temps. I would likely trust Core Temp 0.95, but it's hard to say because some E4300s are Tj(max) = 85 and some are 100, and you can easily get a 10-15 degree issue just from not having one of the pins in right on the heatsink.

My basic test is 1.) Check if BIOS temp is showing close to ambient. If not, you probably need to redo thermal paste and reseat heatsink. 2.) Trust whichever version of Core Temp that gives you temps on cores 15 degrees higher than what your BIOS said for the single sensor.

Im assuming that you haven't read all my previous posts that I made.
I did read them, but I still wasn't clear with what temp readings you were going with. I was mainly replying to what Sniper_Merc was saying about the temp reading difference. I might be wrong, but I was just relaying what I found in that Core 2 Duo Temperature Guide.

If the guide is just wrong on these two facts, someone please let me know:
1.) Tcase is what is reported by the BIOS (obviously can't be lower than ambient on water or air)
2.) Tjuction is ~15 degrees higher than Tcase
 
I am super ultra confused after reading this.

Some people are saying coretemp is ok, use .94, use .95. Sorry if I missed something.

Going off the CoreTemp website, he specifically mentions .95 fixed a bug in the L2 revision Core2's that reported low temps (from http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/history.html)

For me I know running speedfan gives me 15C lower temps than coretemp does, but which is right? People keep saying different things.

People just say CoreTemp .95 is "wrong" because it adds 15C but if the Intel procs use a Tjunc of 100 isn't it correct to do so? Why is it "wrong"?
 
You are not the only one.

Core Temp.94 matches my bios and the Gigabyte software almost exactly.

Core temp .95 is significantly higher 18-20C in most cases.

I have pretty good cooling and .94 gets me down to about 22-24C at idle. Which sounds more correct from what i have read.


My chip is currently running at 3.15Ghz at stock volts (1.280 in CPU-Z).

When i went to 3.3 @ 1.4 V it was fully stable but i was getting worried about teh temps (75C in core temp .95). When i went to .94 i was only getting mid to high 50's.

I would push teh chip farther but i am unsure of teh temperatures and my original goal was 3.0 Ghz anyway so i am already happy.
I should rebuild my water cooler and see what she will do but the current setup is nearly silent.
 
Maybe the only way to check is to check for throttling? Thermal throttling occurs at the Tjunc right? So if CoreTemp is reporting the correct Tjunc, you could easily check by disabling your CPU fan, and then cranking volts/speed until you got throttling (watch CPU-Z for speed?).

Sound ok? (not that I want to try...)

*edit* Never mind, that makes no sense since delta Tjunc in both cases (Tjunc 85 and 100) would be the same and hence throttle at the same point regardless of actual temperature.

lol no way am I going to try that :D. Well I read somewhere on [H] where your just suppose to put as little as a grain of rice *thermal paste* onto the middle of the heatsink then yea... so I will give that a try to see if it lowers down my temps and also when I spread out the thermal paste last time I used my finger... *oily* so probably thats another reason why:confused: Thanks for all your help. Im still trying to say $50 here! :D
 
LOL omg guess what?! I re applied thermal paste with just a grain of rice on it and now its showing 100degrees celcius :O :O : O :O better shut down my comp and go to frys to get me some good thermal paste and a ok fan! later!
 
Ok well I re applied thermal paste again this time spreading it all over the cpu with a CC*dad's :p* and layer not so thick anyways.... im getting around 60degrees idle :(... oh yea I didn't go to fry's yet because my dad is still pretty busy with work*home office* and my mom won't take me there lol. So I will let you guys know tommorrow on my cpu temp.
 
I wouldn't use the stock PSU for that case. It's very cheap and with use with a 8800 I suggest you buy a new one.
 
Here's a hint...use TAT if possible, it's made/designed by Intel and is THE authority when it comes to C2D temp monitoring. For me, TAT matches Core Temp 0.95 and I take it as the truth...there has yet to be a single person I've seen that has challenged TAT's results, and ontop of that...you'd think Intel would know how to accurately monitor their own CPU temps eh? :p

Oh well, one way or another it's entirely possible that the BIOS on most boards isn't reading the same sensors on the CPU that Core Temp and TAT may be capable of reading, as the boards have to be very general and aren't made to read one CPU more accurately then the other.

I dunno, while it does seem outrageous that I'm hitting mid-high 70's load @ 3.2GHz with the stock cooler, it is still the stock cooler...and I won't pass final judgement until I get my Ultra-120 Extreme and lap my IHS.
 
my e4300 is pretty cool in terms of temp but performance is pretty bad. of course I'm sure it would run better if it wasn't sitting on my pile of spare parts in the box :) one of these days ill have to use it.
 
To me it's too nice of a chip to pass up using...however I'm pretty sure I got an above average CPU. I'm doing 3.2GHz at 1.312v load with the stock cooler 24/7 stable. This thing is hardly breaking a sweat and up until 3.1GHz I didn't have to do a single thing other then pump the FSB. :D

That is really good. It should do like 3.6GHz with ~1.5v. :p
 
Still very nice though. What cooling are you using? What voltage did/do you need for 3.2GHz?

I'm really eager to get an Ultra-120 Extreme installed and let loose with the CPU, and I finally convinced my fiance that I'm saving money by overclocking so I've got the "go ahead" from her and all's well. :D

Cooling is in my sig................:D But it's water cooling, I haven't used air cooling in years now ................:eek:

With my boards bios, 3.2 GHz shows as 1.33v vcore, all the rest were at default with the 9x multi.
 
I see...right around my 1.312v under load for 3.2GHz then...but I'm determined (and stubbornly motivated) to push this stock cooler to its limits. :D
 
Hey Bio-hazard, did you had to increase your mch or fsb voltage to get that o/c? :eek:
 
To get to 3.7 on my MSI board the NB was at (bios readings)1.4v, CPU at 1.575v (I think), Ram at 2.2v.

On my new 680i LT board thing (settings) are a little different. CPU 1.55v Bios, NB 1.4. FSB 1.4v, Ram 2.2 (different timings, 1T)
 
Many people do have to once they clear 400FSB...and hopefully it won't be long before I'm there myself. :D

Oh yea haven't bought a heatsink yet but do you think if I just get arctic silver 5 thermal paste will help ?
 
AS5 on it's own compared to stock/no-name paste might benefit you a couple degrees...but nothing huge. Technically still worth it for how little time it'd take though.
 
It's taken me slightly more than 1.5v to make it to 3.6 with my E4300, but it's there none the less.................:eek: I've posted to Windows and can run bench marks at 3.712, but it is still failing at Orthos.

i got one the other day to screw around with while my e6600 is rma'd. it does 3150 ish at stock volts, and takes a little over 1.5v to hit 3600mhz, which will only pass an hour or so of orthos, but benchmarks 3d and runs games. my idle temps are 38c, but full load temps are near 80c with a ultra 120 w/ silenx fan. so i havent been running it that high very much, at least until i figure out whats wrong. i would really like that 100% oc 24/7.

That's more or less what I'm going for.

I can do 3.1GHz at 1.296v stock cooling and 3.2GHz 1.312v so far, also with the stock cooler. I've run into a couple guys on XS that have been able to provide a fair bit of input and I might be able to hit 3.3GHz and MAYbe 3.4GHz on stock cooling, but we'll see what happens.

At any rate I hope I do hit 3.6GHz 12hour Small FFT stable...this chip feels like a winner. :D
 
Hey cornelious, is the 1.296v from the cpu-z, or the actual BIOS setting you placed at?
 
It's set to 1.350v in BIOS, and it is between 1.312v and 1.350v monitored in BIOS, but the BIOS doesn't load the CPU hardly at all, with Orthos Small FFTs loading both cores fully the CPU voltage drops to 1.312v, I could probably mod the ICFX3200 to get rid of the droop...but under full load it's at 1.312v.

I need to find my multimeter and figure out where to measure the vcore on this board though.
 
well just came back from frys and bought a tube of antec silver thermal paste, installed it... and now its at 47degrees sometimes 46degrees so its better :D and to you two talking about overclocking please chat with each other through pm or start a new thread as this thread is just about suggestions for brining down the temperature of my e4300 and not about other people's overclocking results... if I catch you two again I will pm a mod to close this thread down.
