Looking to build a budget gaming pc. Going for best bang for the buck. What do you guys think?

You can do way better for 800-1000. I'd suggest a low-budget Core 2 Duo system.

For $800, thats a pretty damn good bang for your buck PC. I didn't add a case because I believe that a case is a personal choice. If you wait till April 17th, you can grab that DX10 video card I mentioned above. VR-Zone says that the 8600GTS is just a little bit faster than the 7900GT:

unless you have plans to upgrade to a barcelona or agena chip, on that budget you are much better off with a low end C2D build.
 
If your budget is $500, then go with that AMD build. If your budget is $800+, go with Danny's build. If you'd like to save money on the PSU, go for the XClio Stablepower (also an enhance made unit) 460W for $50 at the egg.
