Brawl is Coming!

Don't you need the friend code specifically for the game?

Biggest problem with the Wii is that, but I will have brawl when it comes out.

The Wii's matchmaking system is a joke. Especially if you get a new console and have to re-enter all your buddy keys and give yours out again.

That said, Brawl is pretty fun. I played the Japanese version that a friend of mine imported. I'm new to the series though so I can't really give more input than that.

Nintendo/Best Buy are holding the SSBB Northeast pre-release regional tournament at my college this Saturday. Don't think I'll go though, I hate my college city and it's 60+ miles away.

I'm wondering how much different the fighting engine is from Melee when it comes down to mechanics. Is there wave dashing? SFFLing?

This whole concept of tournaments before the game comes out is stupid. The person who wins either imported it, plays it just like Melee, or just got lucky. How about a tournament 3 weeks AFTER it comes out?

I feel the same way about this too. But this is basically 'evening' the field? I don't even know what control scheme they'll be using (wiimotes? GC controllers? classics?).

Considering I don't even have a Wii, if I did go and we had to use anything except GC controllers, I'd be more screwed. Of course, I wouldn't put it past anyone from that college already having the import and has played it for the last month.

The weird thing is that your school isn't the only one doing this. There are tons of Brawl tournaments popping up. I'd presume it's to hype the game and make people want to buy it...but it really isn't much of a tournament. They should just advertise advance showings of the game rather than tournaments.

From what I can tell of Brawl (and also Mario Kart Wii) it seems like the Wavebird's the way to go. The Wii-mote might be fun and unique for new players, but in anything beyond casual play you're going to find the pad controls to be a lot more precise and consistent.

Anyway, my Wii address is in my sig if Nintendo uses that for matchmaking. If not - I'll post whatever my ID is as soon as I get the game. I'm a little out of practice, but I love fighting games and will take a beating for months if it makes me an expert by summer.

On a tournament level, you can't play SSBB like SSBM. There's no wavedashing or L-cancelling. Unless new techniques are found, so far Brawl won't be as good for tournament and professional play as Melee unfortunately.

Most normal casual players won't notice though, and for the mainstream it is a better game.

So my thought is, lets get a list of all the [H]'ers friend codes so we can play online whenever with eachother. Mine is:

6368 9865 1509 0355
Add me and we will brawl on the 9th

Brawl will not be using Friend Codes. Brawl will have it's own online system, based on usernames, thankfully.

That makes me weep inside. Melee was amazing since the fighting engine as used by 95% of players was well suited to the crazy pace of Melee. Then there was a lot of surprising depth to the engine that the other 5% practiced to use.

Unless some new stuff is discovered here, looks like it'll be more like the original SSB with a mad dash for the Final Smash balls.

I'm glad wavedashing was gone, as it was clearly an exploit. Now, neither player have the advantage, and the game can be played how it's meant to be played. The fact that wavedashing is gone should not make the combat engine any less deep, as it was simply used as a faster alternative to dodging. The pace of the game will slow down a bit, but the strategical element to the game should remain the same.

I'm literally on the edge of my seat for this game. Its at the top of my list for "Most anticipated games of this year". It tied for first place with Starcraft 2.

Who's everyone going to be maining? This will be the first Smash I ever own (I've only played maybe a dozen hours of Melee).

I'm going to be maining Falco (or Wolf, not sure) and Ike (definitely). I played the game a tad on an acquaintance's pirated import, and I really liked Ike...very slow, but incredibly powerful if used correctly.

Also, what controller will everyone be using? I'm probably gonna be using the Classic controller with the custom grip.

I typically played Captain Falcon & Ganondorf in the first games, although I'm passable with Marth and competent with DK and Bowser.
I'm really interested in Wario, though. I've always liked the character, and I loved that he did the spinning piledriver and giant swing in his own game.
Controller = WaveBird.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

I wish nintendo wouldnt fuck us europeans over again and again!!

A few weeks back there was a rumour about brawl being release june 6th, which was quickly dispelled by nintendo, meaning its either true, or brawl is comming even later! over 3 months after the us release, and even worse compared to japan!

this is THE game i got a wii for (had it for 8+ months, only have wii sports and metroid), and then nintendo pulls this shit...

ive been a huge nintendo fan throughout the cube years, but they are quickly losing credibility

Move. You don't see people in North America complaining about having to wait longer than the Japanese do ya?

True, but they really do screw Europe over quite a bit.
I've been across the pond twice in the last few years and it feels like their gaming stores are all about 6 months behind where ours are...except with F1 and soccer (football) games.
We're behind Japan, but they're just as far if not further behind us. Think of what Japan is like to them :)

somehow i doubt moving to north america would be the solution, sure it would cure the game related stuff, but then again...

anyway, sorry if i came off a bit strong, it just really ticks me off, the same thing happend back in the day with soul calibur 2, the difference between then and now is that smash bros is just about the ONLY title on my 'to get' list for the wii. On top of that i dont understand how porting a game to a different region would take anywhere near 5 months. Any translation/voice re-acting could easily have been done parallel to the english/japanse (or for all i care, just publish the english version in europe)

Yea I'm REALLY anticipating this game, I've checked the dojo every single day since it's been up and been playing the hell out of the first two games.

10 Days is all we have left to wait and I look forward to playing then.

On march 9th we should set up a Smash code list so we can play against each other, unless your fairly competitive you will be crushed by me though. I'm not a pro, but definitely a hardcore smash player.

Anyways, 35 (39 playable movesets) characters, 41 stages, a stage builder, online play, 10+hour single player mode, event matches, co-op, new items, stadium games, 450+Trophies, 300+ songs, revamped graphics... it's definitely my #1 most anticipated game ever, and it should definitely live up to my expectations.

I think I'll be maining mario, which sounds stupid and bland, but it looks like he will match my plaay type fairly well. Ill probably use classic controller because im poor and already have 2.

European players, take solace in knowing you'll get Mario Kart Wii a week before we'll get it here in the US. It doesn't necessarily make up for Brawl, but it's something :)

I thought Mario Kart Wii doesn't have a US release date yet? Just Q2-2008 which means sometime in April, May or June.

On G4 last night they announced it was April 15th.
I hunted around and it apparently comes out on the 10th in Japan, 11th in Europe, and the 15th in the US.
I still haven't seen one good thing about that wheel, though. I guess it makes some of the new special techniques easier, but beyond that it's tiring and worthless. The Wavebird and classic controller are luckily still the way to go.

So far this has been the Mario Kart that's gotten the least attention. I mean, the game is out in a month and a half and it's still a complete mystery to anyone who isn't following it.

Thats good to know, I'm not sure if I'll be able to peel myself away from Brawl to play it. But It's a must buy for me.

Anyways, 9 days until we Brawl!

Pre-ordering? I'm not. I'm just going to walk into Best Buy at 10AM and buy it off the shelf.
I don't really see a reason to give 'em my money until the game's in my hands.

Same with me, except I'm picking it up a midnight at Walmart. I have to work that night so I will just go on break and buy it. Staying for 8 hours after I get the game is gonna suck though. I cannot let any games take over my life again... so moderation is key!

lol...since that's a Tuesday/Wednesday for me I simply don't have that option. I'm @ work from 7-4, so I just don't think an all nighter's going to be an option for me.
I've done the midnight camp before, but that was when I was a spry young 23 year old. At 30, I just don't have that motivation anymore.

Hey, I sleep in the day... work at night. Only thing that sucks is daylight savings time begins on March 9th so I'll have to work an hour extra... ah the pain and suffering!

(Hey on the bright side I get a 10% discount on the game!)

Edit: It's a Monday/Tuesday for me, I get Thursday and Friday night off)

I pre-ordered in like....August. Back when the game was gonna be released in Nov. I have no problem putting $10 down early to guarantee me the game. I suspect it will be a madhouse and difficult to find otherwise.

Plus I'm a 9-5er.

Anyone know if EB / Gamestop is doing a midnight release?

I mean, they did one for Guitar Hero 3, I'll be shocked if they don't do one for Brawl.

I will probably buy a Wii just to play Brawl. In melee I mained as Link, but I am just as good with Princess, Luigi and Falco. For fun I play as Samus and Donkey Kong.

What exactly is wave dashing and L-canceling?

Yeah they are. Check your local store at to make sure, but i know a few near me are.

What exactly is wave dashing and L-canceling?

Wavedashing = When you airdodge toward the ground but you collide resulting in a slide in whichever downward direction you dodged in, it's used primarily for spacing, dodging and a few extra combos. It has been removed from Brawl so now there is no directional air dodging, the upside is you can dodge multiple times in the air however.

L-Canceling is Lag canceling, in Melee you hit L or R right before you hit the ground after a areal attack and it cuts the lag time in half. It has been removed in Brawl as well.

There are a few new things in Smash though, automatic sweetspotting means when our character is recovering very close to the edge that they will grab that edge. Footstool jumping means we can jump on opponents heads resulting in a weak meteor attack, our second jumps and recovers can still be used after this if we hadn't already used them.
Crawling has also been added for a few characters, I think it will be primarily used to avoid projectiles. There's also quite a few here http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/howto/technique/technique10.html

Even though Brawl had a few things removed I believe they were non-critical and don't think it will hamper most peoples enjoyment of the game. Some of the extreme hardcore players don't like them, but most like myself embrace the new smash.

I just wish it would hurry up and come to the states.

Much like any fighting game, the changes they made really only effect the highest level players.
For instance in Tekken sometimes they'll change the amount for frames for a single move to better balance things. 99.9% of the people will never know it but it can take a character who's way too powerful and make them normal. Or vice versa.
The same applies to Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, and Smash Brothers.
The things that were tweaked likely won't affect or even get noticed by most people. It's the hard-core competitive players that notice. For joe average, I bet you wouldn't notice wavedashing or l-canceling unless someone told you they were doing it and what it's doing.

Too true, Joe Average usually only plays smash for a few months then forgets about it until the next one comes around, or if he's really dedicated might play it off and on for a very long time but never really learns anything new. However the hardcore people rip the game apart and study it to find the most efficient way possible to compete with all the characters. I'm fairly hardcore, but not so much that I dislike playing item matches on wacky stages or anything like that. I have fun playing in perfectly causal settings and look forward to learning a whole new smash game, may the players I add to my friends list actually challange me! It will be a very refreshing change from tons of practice against computers with some human players thrown in the mix every once in a while.

I've said it before and I said it again, I'm very excited about Brawl. Only other game that could compare to my excitement for this game was Oblivion, but even however epic that game was I grew tired of it after around 400 hours or so. Smash Brothers I never seem to get tired off.

I'm actually late to the Smash Bros. party. I only played the original VERY casually and never owned it.
I got into Melee, but only after it was a bargain item. I never really thought of the game as a "real" fighting game until I started to play more and more. It's so different that it skirts the line of fighting and even just a normal 2D platformer.
I'm not great, but I pick up on things pretty quickly. If I'm exposed to an exploit, I'll be able to duplicate it pretty easily. Ditto for any sort of unusual strategies. I tend to flock toward the big damage/slow moving sort of characters, so I'm good at finding ways to make slower characters seem faster than they should be.
