Borging Dial-up systems

Guys,

Any ideas on the best way to borg a dial-up computer?

I am building a nice 3500+ Athlon for a coworker and he has agreed to have FAH installed on it, but he only has dial-up. I don't want it killing his dial-up. Any suggestions?

Edit: I was planning on running it as a service, maybe it needs to be in graphic (yuck!)? I say yuck because the graphical version doesn't seem to play well with other programs sometimes.

I was also wondering how dial-up computers work with folding at home. I had someone express interest in running F@H, but I was unsure on how the dialup thing works.

Timeless?

I'm not so worried about timeless, although I probably will have to set it up that way, but was worried about how it will request to connect to the internet. I may have to leave it off :(

Well you just do timeless (it will run just as fast but would be better for deadlines with dialup) and then when you are doing the config, i forget where it says it, but somewhere it asks 2 questions, one to connect auto.. then the other i think is to connect when online or something to that effect..

Yeah, that is what I'm afraid of. I probably won't be able to add it. I'm not willing to create that annoyance for him. I hate it when people don't have broadband.

Aol will suck the life out of your computer, with its spam and spyware. Each time I see a commercial talking about it, they full of shit.

I used to have my PCs on dialup... it was a pain in the butt... Everything would be fine for a few weeks, and then something would happen, and F@H wouldn't automatically download/send a WU... I blame it on Windows and it's "If I turn this setting on in one place, it automatically changes in 15 other places.... but if I change it back, it'll only change it in one place" theory... The only way I could get it to automatically dial out again was with a format...

PS... and yes, AOL will suck the life out of any PC...

I learned how to fix this problem. Tell them broadband through verizon is only $30 a month versus the $23 or whatever, and you don't have to dial it, and it's 30 times as fast.

I told this to one of my customers, and he was like "oh.". The next day I get an email from him: 'I ordered that dsl you suggested, what does an ethernet port look like?' I guess it's better than the alternative.

Actually, that's not a bad idea.

If you are doing TT's with console here is a summary of the questions:
User name
Team number
Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service
Ask before fetching/sending work
Use internet explorer settings
Use proxy
Big wu
Change advanced options

Core priority
CPU usage
Assembly code
Battery power
Checkpoints
WU w/o deadlines
Minimize networking
Clock
Machine id

My typing skills diminish after 20 characters :(
But I don't know of a flag to only connect when online.
I know it tries like every 6 hours.

/edit - also it tends to lock if it's done six TT's

Actually,

I guess it would work. If you set it as a service with timeless and don't have it ask to connect, it will just fail sending until you are logged on. Of course, it might kill downloads. How much time does it take for the the send and transmit to take over dial-up? Anyone? Bueller?

depends... If I remember right, about 5-10 min for each WU.... But I think with the TT, you can do up to 10 WUs at a time without uploading? am I right on that guys?

Yes, you can cache up to 10WU, however after it finishes 6 it used to (F@H4) sit there and try to send before it would finish the other 4.

It doesn't actually take that long for the timeless tinkers. I have it running on my mom's system since I'm not around to babysit it. It only takes a couple of minutes to download a queue of 10 WUs. It takes a bit longer to upload them, though but not 5-10 minutes per WU. I think it might take around 5-10 minutes to upload the queue. It's been a while since I've done anything with it, though. This is on a connection that usually sits at 26.4.

Is it better not to queue them, so that there isn't so noticeable a time steal?

I just run the default settings on my dialup with no problems. It only takes about 2 minutes to download my work. I hate living out in there middle of nowhere.

In most cases I think it's better to queue them since most people don't leave their dialup connection on. It can end up being a big waste of cycles to have a unit finish and sit there doing nothing because the system is not connected to the internet to transmit the finished unit and grab a new one. With most modern systems, it doesn't take long to chew through the timeless tinkers anyway.

One thing I don't remember is if the console will allow you to choose the number WUs to queue. I think it's either all or nothing. If it will allow you to choose less than 10 it might be a good idea to have it only queue a few units so the impact on the dialup connection is smaller.

Of course, you could always set up like 10 F@H instances, folding at 5-10% for each instance.... then you could save up to 100 TT :D and you'd only have to think about it every... well... month...

My real issue was that I was trying to make it transparent to the user, but because of the bandwidth I don't think it is possible. Oh well, at least I will be able to fold with it during burn-in.
