I finally got a another comp to add to the effort. MSI mobo I scrounged up here in the office, P4 2Ghrz no HT. 512MB RAM, 120gig HD.

QMDs are proteins that run on P4s only. They are very good when it comes to yeilding points, but they can be very system demanding (300+mb of ram). If it's dedicated you might think about running them. They are worth 450pts and most machines can chew through about one WU/day.

To get them, run the console in -config mode, turn on "> than 5mb work units" and run the console with -advmethods and it should pull down a QMD.

Again, these things are memory hogs. The beta client can restrict the amount of ram it uses, but 512mb is enough to do them for a dedicated boxen.

Hope that kind of makes sence.

Yes and no... you can "set it and forget it" (as the infomercial says), in fact it's designed for that........ but to maximize the output of your machine, you can do a handful of different things (adding flags, enabling big WUs,etc)... there are guides on www.hardfolding.com that'll walk you through alot of the "advanced" setup.... I don't know how much longer this thing is going to be folding, I just installed speedfan out of curiosity, and it's running at 75c..... 167f

Heh, this is the first P4 I've seen like this, if it's not unusual I'm not going to care. It just seemed odd, I have a stock cooler on my personal comp which is in my sig, and it maybe hit's 65c when folding and playing CS:S. P4 2.8ghrz (HT).
 
I would make sure there is decent airflow in the case and make sure the heatsink is seated properly with the right amount of thermal paste. Those temps are too high and I would be the system is also throttling down which is killing production.

 
those temps do seem quite high.... I have a northwood P4, and I'm usually around 53-56°C.... Might be time to clean out your heatsink?

I just got done taking some of the system apart, there's no dust, the cables and componets are prime for airflow.... The heatsink doesn't look askew or anything, I'm pretty sure it's all stock still. I think I'll bring some artic silver from home tomorrow and clean the surfaces and try that.....
 
I just borged a P4 as well.. :p

But one question to the gurus... why is the console time off by over 7 hours??? Any way I can set it to the correct time?
 
It's based on GMT... it's the same for everyone that way.... If you use something like EMIII to monitor your boxen, you won't even notice the time..... It'll let you know if there's a problem too, if you can't meet a deadline,etc....

Ok, I took the heatsink off, I was quite appalled, 1st off that jackass that built this as a server system before my use of this board, didn't remove the plastic film on the heatsink pad. So I removed it and the pad, and I found some heatsink compound. But it's still running at 75c under full load. But when I booted the machine, and loaded some stuff, it seemed hella faster.
 
The chip may have been throttling based on temperature. P4s have this built in IIRC.

 
before that TIM has a chance to burn it.......... get rid of it.... use that artic silver you were going to bring.... it'll be much better than the TIM....

nothing like leaving the plastic on....

I hate it when they forget to take out the plastic pad!

We've got a handful of IBM Intellistations around that my boss used to burn in, and found that the pad was still covered. Really makes me question how some of these people get to building PC's some days... :rolleyes:

 
Success! I put some off brand silver stuff on it, temp is 49c right now, full load folding! w00t!

I like the feel of the EM III program...
I can get one boxxen to show up on it and works great, but the second one... will not register with it. I can navigate to the FAH directory and .exe file on the remote machine just fine. But EM III will not display anything about it other than error... :p

What am I doing wrong?

Do have the properties on the share set to allow reading and writing? Thats probably the most common problem people have with EM3. :cool:

That was the first thing I checked. Gave myself full read/write privs to that remote directory.

EDIT: What is weird is through EM III in the options pane, I can see all the prior WUs and such that have been done on that remote PC.
 
I think in windows world, you have to have the "guest" account active.... I think that's what EMIII uses...I disabled it once, and EMIII wouldn't monitor that PC.... turned it back on, magically worked again..... So is your guest account disabled?

The box that functions with EMIII is WinXP Pro. The box that is not... is Win2K Pro. Both are set up nearly identical. My user account functions fine with both machines as I have full free reign access to them.

The Windows 2000 just will not work. I enabled guest account on the 2K box and still no workie... :p

EDIT: Running EMIII v3.2.0 for those wondering.

Got it working. For some reason, I had to install VB5 Runtime files on the 2k box. From there, started working like a charm. :rolleyes:

You do not need the Guest account. I have always disabled that on all my boxen and have never had any trouble.

It's been a while since I've run a 2k box and don't have one right now I can take down and install 2k on to see if I could recreate the problem.
