Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Never understood the purpose of the keys. Why didn't loot just drop in the game to gear you up? I hated camping Twitter, Facebook, etc for upgrades in BL2.

I look at it as free DLC. And with the pages I linked, you didn't have to camp those areas - I'm not a big fan of it either. Yes, I can see the whole social media blah blah hype blah element and whatnot, but considering the state of the industry where some would have made those keys (or the items unlocked by them) for pay, I'm happy. They had to know that users will make aggregate sites like the Orcz table I linked and the subreddits etc.. to catalog the keys.

SHIFT itself is sort of a reward for participating in the game/community, thus the keys. Most of the time what they unlocked was already present in game, these were just ways to get random, level-linked Epics or better whenever you used a key. Considering you can stock up to 255 of them at a time, it isn't exactly like they were being stingy, either, and it seemed they "got it" that players liked having multiple alts etc. I'm not through BL2 yet but I've been turning in a key every few level and getting a gun that generally sets me up for quite awhile The SHIFT codes that give unique stuff, like cosmetic unlocks and the like are meant to be bonuses for the community. Some time limited, (ie holidays) most not. Of course, entering the SHIFT code to unlock heads/costumes were, once the in-game item was used, permanently added to your account so if you decided a few weeks later you really liked the Siren's St Patrick's Day green kit, you could always swap into it.

Overall, they're additional free gifts and Gearbox/2K etc.. has done the right thing by making the codes generalist - that is to say, not account specific. I would be frustrated if you had to sit around and camp facebook/twitter for codes that could only be used once on one account, but as the Orcz wiki shows that there is one key for PC used by all for a given reward and that's a great thing.

Oh, one more reason to buy BL2 and BL:TPS if it matters to you - Linux support! BL2 was given full Linux support awhile back, and TPS will be LAUNCHING with Linux support. This is a big deal - 2K and Aspyr worked together to get a feature-parity ready Linux version to release at launch and this is monumental to have a AAA title launch with a Linux native variant. 2K games is actually pretty progressive in this respect, as Civilization: Beyond Earth is also launching with Linux support this month, and they've made Linux versions of past titles like XCOM Enemy Unknown and Civ5. Glad to see such progress and I'm definitely going to support these efforts when good games are brought to Linux.

Only people that didn't play the game very much could possibly get bent out of shape about Shift codes, no offense. They were so incidental.

A ShiFT code would give you a couple purple items - not always good - and mainly what it was useful for was the initial first 10-20 levels of a new character if you weren't finding any better loot before then. And you didn't have to camp anywhere for the ShiFT codes, people posted complete lists of them on just about every forum where BL2 was discussed. They were by no means a necessity for playing the game -- just a fun thing, nothing more. The game always gave me better loot than what I got out of ShiFT codes.

As for loot drop rate in BL2 in general, I agree it sucked in BL2, it seemed Gearbox wanted to turn it into a grindfest. I thought they had loot pretty much perfect in BL1. But then again so many things they just plain had right in BL1 and then regressed in BL2. Hell, Crawmerax is probably still the best boss in the franchise in terms of being a challenge but being fair and being rewarding. I would kill for a "Borderlands HD" remake on a new engine with new NPC's and DLC's and map areas. That's the game I really want.

If anyone is sitting on an extra game key from a video card purchase or something hit me up!

I was pretty disappointed the way they handled the DLC & season pass for #2. DLC was mandatory because loot drops were severely nerfed regular game to where you were constantly underpowered. This game was supposed to be an expansion, but charged full price. WTF. I'll pick up the GOTY edition.

I'm going to wait it out and see the user reviews especially about the loot system and drops to see if they fixed anything from BL2. If the reward and loot system is the same then I'll wait for the inevitable GOTY edition on a steam summer sale next year.

Gearbox don't screw up the loot system and gun parts like you did in BL2. Just copy and paste what you did in BL1 right into the Pre-sequel and we will be good, have a nice a day.

I really want to buy this but I fucking hate Randy Pitchford. He is a total Smeg head.

I loved BL2. It was a loot hunters dream but the DLC was way overboard. I think I'll wait for a discount on this one or at least LOTS of peer reviews (gaming journo's lawlz).

I just want to say that in 317 hours of BL2 I rarely got legendary items. I got some shield and a class item once. Number of legendary guns? 0. Number of elemental purple guns? 0.

I despised the game towards the end. Best thing was joining a game with a hacker and him dropping me random guns. That was how I got gear.

Since this isn't Borderlands 3 not going to buy it I'll wait for the real deal watched gameplay more of the same.

I'll wait for the pattern to repeat (50 DLC releases and then a 'GOTY' version)

Ratings mean nothing didn't think this game was going to blow people over since it's just a first person shooter with party favors.

I agree man, I wanted to love BL2. I just couldn't force myself to continue through it. BL1 had me from pretty early on.

BL1 had me from the intro sequence. Probably one of the best intros i've ever seen. Music was perfect too. Cage the Elephant.

the game has been getting almost zero buzz in the past few months...almost like no one cares for such a 'big' release...maybe people are tired of Borderlands or the Aliens: CM fiasco is still fresh in people's minds...did the graphics get worse?...looks like it...the reviews are pretty much average which is what I was expecting...more of the same...

"A well-executed but thoroughly unambitious extension of Borderlands 2...The Pre-Sequel is happy to be Just Another Borderlands Game. I enjoyed it for that, but I also finished it thinking my time would’ve been better spent on one of the more original games that’ve released this year"

I think you've nailed it. It's "all of the above."

Yes. I think it's spot on.
If you're Borderland's fatigued, this will not make that better.

If you are into that crazy, fast paced, loot grab then it's for you.

I liked 1 and 2 but I probably wont even try this until it's 5 bucks after Christmas,

I can only assume this was made and released to be a glorified cash grab because by all rights I think everyone would have been fine waiting for the eventual part 3.

Part 2 isn't even that old.

I had a blast with both previous games and I played almost entirely solo to boot.
I'm sure I'll end up buying this eventually, but the timing revolves around how polished the Evil Within is upon launch.

I just can't make up my mind about that game.

For this I popped the GMG 25 percent off coupon and I'm right there with you on my Borderlands mindset so I know the absolute worse case scenario for me will be playing this one "in between other games."

Correct. It's the Arkham Origins of the Borderlands series - second string developer brought on to keep the IP generating revenue for the publisher while the real developer works on either the real sequel or just something else entirely. This is a $40 game at best for anyone that's played BL2 simply because it'll feel like an expansion.

BL1 is still king, BL2 is still good for anyone that hasn't played either. All of these games absolutely nail co-op in terms of the drop-in system. Hopefully BL3 or Borderworlds or whatever they end up calling the real sequel will also be on a new engine, have things like instanced loot, and get back to roots to some degree by reconsidering what people loved about the earlier games.

This one is wait and see for me. Want to know how it is from actual gamers before I lay out my money.

I just did the 5.1gb preload on steam, I believe it is available in ~8 hours. I'll try to get some time in tonight but I have a midterm exam Thursday and another on Friday and then a programming assignment due next week so I hope I don't end up blowing 4-5 hours in the game.

Going to try to limit myself to 1 hour - hopefully

One thingI really hope is different compared to BL2 is hopefully a suite of improved co-op "behavior" systems will be added. That is to say, I was playing BL2 just last night in my first run through. I allowed drop-in, and came into a handful of people who dropped in and out while we were raiding a bandit lair as part of a story mission. After beating the big boss, I barely had time to get to the loot before one of the other players grabbed the "warp out of here and go back to sanctuary" lever, which p ported ALL of us out immediately. I was still looking for one of the story-related voice-coms and other secret items in the area, and I didn't like - as the host - getting whipped out of the area because someone else decided it was time to go.

Likewise, the "single player offline, friends only, invite only, open game" options aren't bad, but I really think they need more options as some other titles have "I'm looking for loot" "I'm new" "This is a story focused game" "I want a speed run" etc... and hosts can decide which parameters are "flagged" when they host their game. Only players who fall into those categories will be dropped into those game types - thus, if I set my game for "Newbies having fun" and "Story based experience", if someone is only flagged "Fasted possible loot run", theyshouldn't end up in my game. Many other titles do things like this, so I am interested to ssee if TPS does as well, because I feel its sorely needed.

I played nearly all of BL1 through solo, just for the fun/story of it, and a good bit of BL2 has been either solo or with players I already know. However, I should like to enable drop in for random players because it seems that certain characters especially (ie Zero, particularly on the Melee tree) work better with others around, but I don't want their presence to make my experience less enjoyable. Hopefulyl this has been refined with BL:TPS.

Likewise, being able to see multiple "quest" content on the map at once etc..there are a lot of little things that can be refined in TPS and would make a better experience.

are there any functioning coupons? I saw the GMG 25% off for October coupon, but that doesn't work, and neither does the 24 hr coupon they tweeted.

There's a 25% GMG one that I used pretty recently. P65PW6-F9B91D-TW2AG2 Try that one. Its listed on the "24 hours only" slot on the main page right now, even when not logged in.

Nothing has changed in BL:TPS since its just a forked BL2. And I'm not really sure how the game can be expected to regulate player behavior. In general, randoms in MP games are shitheads. Your main problem may just be inexperience with the co-op system if you're only just scratching the surface of BL2.

I'll leave my co-op games open to public most of the time, but I have a pretty low tolerance - if someone's being annoying or constantly ninja-looting every red chest, they're gone. If someone's acting oblivious when I go down and not coming to revive, they're gone. You can also hit the key to bring up the menu when someone's trying to teleport since there's a countdown, which cancels the countdown just like it did in BL1. If they're trying to teleport to their own areas constantly without communicating why, rather than letting the host be point for the missions, they're gone.

The key is really just tolerating randoms long enough to build a small network of good players and then you can join their games and vice versa. In my experience, the single biggest thing in BL2 that well bring in tons of friend requests: when someone else goes down IMMEDIATELY stop what you're doing and go revive them, even if 1000 enemies stand between you and you're likely to go down trying. A revive-centric playstyle should come naturally to Left4Dead veterans. When you play the game like your co-op partners are the most important part of the game, the co-op really shines. Second, don't poach second wind kills. Meaning when a teammate is down, and he's trying to kill a nearby enemy to get a second wind, be conscious of it and leave that enemy for the teammate, and instead focus on reviving them. Or you can chip away at that enemy's health a bit to make the second wind kill easier for the teammate. Lastly, if you're host and certain teammates have been playing with you for a while and they're cool, let them be the first to the loot chests. This is actually more rewarding than fighting them to be first just because you're the host. People will recognize these nuances and you'll get even more friend requests.

Well low expectations may be paying off. Lvl9 so far and actually enjoying it. Soundtrack is also great - has a very Tron: Legacy soundtrack vibe. No idea on loot drop rate yet compared to BL2 since its hard to say at this early stage.

If you're a fan of Borderlands and enjoyed the previous games then I *think* this may just turn out to be like that saying about pizza- "there's no such thing as bad Borderlands." Not expecting to put nearly as many hours into TPS as I did BL1 and BL2, but its a Borderlands fix nonetheless.

That's reassuring. I like the Borderlands games because I like the audio, visuals, and story but am worried that I'll eventually grow tired of the gameplay. I bought Pre-Sequel but will have to wait for activation tomorrow.

yeah unfortunately that's the 24hr one which doesn't work. Ah well, guess I'll have to wait for an official sale!

Yeah its already unlocked in some regions, but VPN'ing to one of them to play earlier is grey area that can put your Steam account at risk. But there's a way to use a combo of VPN + family sharing feature to mitigate risk.

What I realized again is that Borderlands games just do not present well in gameplay videos, or at least they probably won't strike anyone as anything special watching someone else play. I missed the Borderlands 1 wave completely because screenshots put me off and I thought the cell shaded art style was ugly. But the things that are compelling and suck you into these games don't hit you until you actually start playing.

Oh yes, I am relatively new to the game and you're right, I don't expect the game to police other players, I just want more tools to make things easier to find good co-op partners, and deal with bad ones.

I didn't know for example that you could interrupt a port attempt by another player by bringing up a menu - that's helpful, thanks. However, it really doesn't seem like it should be necessary. Other games have much better systems. Something like a "Player 1 is voting to teleport to Zone A. Agree?" system where all the players could then press to the affirmative or negative. Of course, put something in like a 30 second timeout (ie to keep AFK or those not paying attention from holding everyone back) and give the host tie-breaking and veto-power, along with limiting all players from trying to "brute force" voting.

Also, considering that many times players aren't willing to sit down and type out a conversation about what kind of gameplay everyone expects this session to be, that's why I think the "flagging/tagging" system would help. Sure, you'll have jerks and whatnot now and then, but many other games work this way (Resident Evil 6 is notable in this regard) where you can set up your preferable flags and joiners can see ahead of time what yours are, or quick-join will take similar flags into account. A few mechanical features would certainly help, but I suppose I can get along without them - its just for a modern AAA title, it doesn't seem one should have to do so.

Thanks for all your tips by the way, I certainly intend to play in a co-op friendly manner and just hope I find others who do so as well. Thanks!

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel just unlocked for me! Diving in head first! :D

Okay this is definitely the best soundtrack since Max Payne 3's by Health.
